Hobby Lobby CEO open letter: “Honoring God is more important than turning a profit”
Hotair ^ | 01/05/2013 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 01/06/2013 8:26:47 AM PST by SeekAndFind

Normally I'd be inclined to run something like this on a Sunday, when I like to explore more faith-based topics. However, today is Hobby Lobby Appreciation Day, where consumers who support the Christian ownership's stand against the HHS mandate that attempts to impose a highly restrictive definition of religious expression can put their money where their mouths are. Since I don't really have a hobby at the moment, I'll instead offer a passage from the open letter written by Hobby Lobby CEO David Green, who explains why he's decided to spend a lot of money and risk even more to fight the HHS regulation that would force him to act against his religious principles.

We’re Christians, and we run our business on Christian principles. I’ve always said that the first two goals of our business are (1) to run our business in harmony with God’s laws, and (2) to focus on people more than money. And that’s what we’ve tried to do. We close early so our employees can see their families at night. We keep our stores closed on Sundays, one of the week’s biggest shopping days, so that our workers and their families can enjoy a day of rest. We believe that it is by God’s grace that Hobby Lobby has endured, and he has blessed us and our employees. We’ve not only added jobs in a weak economy, we’ve raised wages for the past four years in a row. Our full-time employees start at 80% above minimum wage.

But now, our government threatens to change all of that. A new government health care mandate says that our family business MUST provide what I believe are abortion-causing drugs as part of our health insurance. Being Christians, we don’t pay for drugs that might cause abortions, which means that we don’t cover emergency contraception, the morning-after pill or the week-after pill. We believe doing so might end a life after the moment of conception, something that is contrary to our most important beliefs. It goes against the Biblical principles on which we have run this company since day one. If we refuse to comply, we could face $1.3 million PER DAY in government fines.

Our government threatens to fine job creators in a bad economy. Our government threatens to fine a company that’s raised wages four years running. Our government threatens to fine a family for running its business according to its beliefs. It’s not right. I know people will say we ought to follow the rules; that it’s the same for everybody. But that’s not true. The government has exempted thousands of companies from this mandate, for reasons of convenience or cost. But it won’t exempt them for reasons of religious belief.

So, Hobby Lobby – and my family – are forced to make a choice. With great reluctance, we filed a lawsuit today, represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, asking a federal court to stop this mandate before it hurts our business. We don’t like to go running into court, but we no longer have a choice. We believe people are more important than the bottom line and that honoring God is more important than turning a profit.

It’s worth pointing out that the mandate doesn’t exempt actual religious organizations either, such as Catholic charities, Presbyterian hospitals, Lutheran schools, and so on. Why? That’s the crux of the issue: the Obama administration is attempting to redefine religious expression to only those activities which take place within the four walls of a place of worship, or those activities restricted only to those of a single faith. That means that Catholic hospitals would qualify only if they refused to treat and employ any non-Catholics, for instance. Can you imagine those lawsuits?

The mandate for free birth control, which is already cheap and readily available for anyone who wants it (and has federal subsidies for Medicaid recipients already in place through Title X), is just a Trojan horse in an attack on religious liberty — and even more, for freedom of choice. If businesses want to offer “free” birth control (which will get funded by premium hikes), they can already do so; no one is stopping them. Same for schools, hospitals, and private citizens who want to donate money to family-planning clinics on their own. Barack Obama and Kathleen Sebelius want to strip that choice from Americans and force everyone to subsidize the procreative choices of everyone else, even those tens of millions whose religious beliefs have heretofore never had to be part of public policy. That’s the invasion of privacy, and it’s people like David Green who are being exploited.

Update: Added a bit to the second-to-last paragraph, and also wanted to include Hobby Lobby’s online shopping website link. You can support the company from the comfort of your own home.

One possibility:

If you can’t find a big chain or manufacturer who openly espouses conservative moral standards, go smaller.

For the new fridge, look for a mom-and-pop or local dealer. Failing that, try to buy through a right-minded sales rep who works on commission. Same with the vehicle — find a dealership run by good folks.

Keep your $ out of the wrong hands.

We go there all the time. My wife sews, so they have one of the best sewing supplies around. She loves the store. The only draw back to their stores, is they sometimes have long lines checking out and few checkout counters. You have to wait long times some times. But, that is about the only draw back that we have found. They are closed Sunday, just like the Chicken store. Good for the both of them.

I went to Hobby Lobby for the first time yesterday to support the effort. It's far from my house and JoAnn Fabrics and Michael's are closer, but I loved Hobby Lobby. Now that I know what they have, and that the prices of its fabrics and many other similar goods are not exorbitant as they are at JoAnn Fabrics, I will certainly go there first instead of JoAnn.

Also, they have an online coupon. You don't have to sign up like at JoAnn.

They sell Krylon spray paint there.

I’ve seen some nice outdoor furniture, too, and they have a nice selection of fabric that looks like it’s better quality than Joann’s.

There’s a Hobby Lobby in DeWitt in the Syracuse area, right next to Wegman’s I need to stop there more often next time I go to Wegman’s.

“For the new fridge, look for a mom-and-pop or local dealer.”

I do a lot of that already. In the next three years or so we'll be replacing our central heat and air unit. I have a really GREAT family run heat and air vendor that will do the work. Unfortunately, most of the money will actually be for the unit itself. I find nothing on any of the major vendor's websites (Trane, Carrier, etc) that indicates any philosophy.

Sadly, I have a feeling that one or more of these are run by people we support, but they keep their beliefs to themselves to avoid having the nut-ball faction marching outside their buildings. That's what really pisses me off. People can express brain-dead liberal ideas and get away with it, but if you express conservative values, the freak circus shows up.

What a wonderful company. I don’t think I’ve ever been inside a Hobby Lobby but I’m going to start trying to shop there.

Supreme Court... What a joke it has become to constitutional rights for Americans. John Roberts can pound sand.

What a damned coward.

Didn’t know they had an affiliated company here in Hong Kong. I will have to check them out.

We shop at Hobby Lobby all the time. It is not the closest to the house but not more then 10mile further. We spend hundreds of dollars in yarn, (I need sheep) to support the knitting addicts in my house. Love the store and the people working there, and the praise and worship music is a nice bonus.

The crazy thing about the execution and implementation of this law is how arbitrarily it is applied. Tyndale House Publishers, which publishes the Bible and many great Christian books, sued and received a stay. Unfortunately, I think they’ll lose but at least it was able to buy some time. It has about 250 full-time employees.

What do you expect from readers of the Huffington post? Their comments are no more repugnanT that those who claimed to be Christians yet they, not giving a damn that the Democrat delegates at their convention thrice booed the mention of God’s name, voted for obama and the Democrats.

The Supreme Court has turned into another arm of the Socialist a/k/a, Democrat Party. Both are dedicated to the destruction of the Constitution. If our side believes that thy will save us from Socialism or will be a neutral party, they are in for one hell of a rude awakening.

I was never very good at crafting, but I used to love browsing at Hobby Lobby. We don’t have those stores in Canada, as far as I know, but I’ll check out their website and see if they can ship here.

Kudos to them for taking a stand in favor of life.

It'd be a lot easier if they were the RC-controlled planes and N-scale trains Hobby Lobby instead of the knitting/crafts one (I guess you can't both stand for principle and sell cool stuff), but still, I hear ya...
