White House Weighs Broad Gun-Control Agenda in Wake of Newtown Shootings

A working group led by Vice President Biden is seriously considering measures backed by key law enforcement leaders that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors, the sources said.

To sell such changes, the White House is developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses. White House aides have also been in regular contact with advisers to New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I), an outspoken gun-control advocate who could emerge as a powerful surrogate for the Obama administration’s agenda.

In addition to potential legislative proposals, Biden’s group has expanded its focus to include measures that would not need congressional approval and could be quickly implemented by executive action, according to interest-group leaders who have discussed options with Biden and key Cabinet secretaries. Possibilities include changes to federal mental-health programs and modernization of gun-tracking efforts by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Obama’s advisers have calculated that the longer they wait, the more distance there is from the Newtown massacre and the greater the risk that the bipartisan political will to tackle gun violence will dissipate.

“This is not something that I will be putting off,” Obama said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” in an interview broadcast last Sunday.

At the White House meeting, Stanek said, “the vice president indicated that there was a very short timeline for him to get back to the president with his recommendations because the American public has a short memory.”

The part of giving firearms to minors probably means they want to make it illegal to let your minor shoot a gun.

Well then, her Christmas present won't be much fun, will it?

“track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database”

We can count on the government to do that. They did a bang up job on their Fast and Furious debacle.

I got a better idea, why don’t we just put the names and addresses of every criminal that owns a registered gun or has a concealed carry permit in the newspaper, so we will know where they are?

Opps, I forgot, criminals don’t register their firearms or apply for concealed carry.

Maybe I should write my congresscritter and Turban (dirtbag) Durbin and tell him that. He probably didn’t think of it.

You already have Mayor Menino talking about what went on in Newtown as if it was supposed to have involved giving guns to young children to shoot at each other. Numerous publications, news sites and bloggers quote him: "“I understand the second amendment, the right to bear arms. But I don’t understand how young kids should be able to get guns,”

That's pretty much evidence that this was a preplanned event that apparently also involved Joe Biden ~ because it's Menino citing Biden in this statement.

Now Biden is a fairly thuggish guy but he's not so stupid as to tell a self-incriminating story AFTER the fact that is so at odds with what seems to have happened.

Time to begin investigating Joe Biden's involvement in the killings!

Now why would Obama want to disarm the populace so early in his second term? Hmmm. Now what else might he be planning that large segments of society might resist? There is quite a list of horrors that are possible.

I agree with you. However, some might think me as being a conspiracy theorist. So I keep a little quiet. Much too much nonsense in that debacle.

That isn’t the point.
Additional “controls” make it look like the gub’mint is “doing something” and, simultaneously increases its power.
Its a win/win for the Federales.

“Sandy Hook was perfect. Too perfect for my take.”

Earlier I would have disagrered with you, but not much now. We know the Government maintains electronic survielance over a great deal of intenet traffic, especially public websites like FR, just to see if somebody is concocting some kind of an illegal plan, or to see if they can frame some conserative with trying to do that.

Lanza was apparently on the internet for a lot of his time playing particularly violent video games and probably became an active member of the video gaming community, posting a great many of his weird and violent thoughts on various public message boards maintained by that community. It would have been easy for a shadowy government operative to stumble onto those messages by automated key word searches and target him for legitimate survielance.

Going from there to recruiting him to perpetrate a massacre would have been no harder, and taken no more ruthless evil, than conceiving and implementing Operation Fast and Furious, which was obviously concocted to produce as much horrific carnage as possible to gin up support for gun control. F&F having failed disastrously, the Obamunists probably decided to come up with an uttely horrific school massacre of innocents, and Lanza turned out to be the ideal candidate to perpetrate it. After all, why was his computer’s hard drive destroyed unless he did it on somebody’s instructions or an Obamunist “cleaner” came to his house right after he murdered his mother and did the job on the computer.

>>There is quite a list of horrors that are possible.

The list is found in history. Nothing Obama is doing is new. Its just never been done to people with so much to lose, so much access to information, so many personal firearms, or on a population that is so divided along ethnic and racial lines.

It is going to be a bloodbath beyond our comprehension. Perhaps some biblical “and they killed all the men, women, children, and animals” kind of massacre, but on a scale of millions.

Once he drives us to unleash this hell on Earth, there will be no stopping it until it burns itself out.

Obama and the Democrats who believe the ideology are simply the most evil people to have ever lived. The rest of the Dems are just deluded footsoldiers or cannon fodder who follow evil because they don’t know what good even is.

First thing that’s plea bargained away. NYC has that in its laws. If you use a gun in the commission of a felony it’s automatic one year jail. It’s the first thing that gets plea bargained away.

Rasmussen Poll is pretty accurate. 55 percent will accept some form of assault weapons ban, but 62 percent oppose total banning of gun ownership. All this is based on current perception of what an assault weapons ban is. Obama and Dems wants to use this issue in the 2014 elections. GOP is not united after fiscal cliff vote, and fearful of the Dem/MSM PR machine in the next election as well as Tea Party challenge during primary. NRA and other organizations need to lean on Dems as well as shore up GOP. They have influence in both parties. This is a fight for our lives. Forces in our favor, bad economic times means people are wary of police cutbacks and being left on their own during crime. If our economy was booming, AWB has a good chance of passing, maybe the hard economic times may temper disarmament.

Amen, brother. We are always one violent maniac away from losing our rights. How about the other side start backtracking a bit for every defensive firearm use?

While I’m not quite ready to make the same leap taildragger is, he does provide a good example of how forcing the democrats backward is a winning strategy.
