White House Weighs Broad Gun-Control Agenda in Wake of Newtown Shootings

A working group led by Vice President Biden is seriously considering measures backed by key law enforcement leaders that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors, the sources said.

To sell such changes, the White House is developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses. White House aides have also been in regular contact with advisers to New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I), an outspoken gun-control advocate who could emerge as a powerful surrogate for the Obama administration’s agenda.

SNIP

In addition to potential legislative proposals, Biden’s group has expanded its focus to include measures that would not need congressional approval and could be quickly implemented by executive action, according to interest-group leaders who have discussed options with Biden and key Cabinet secretaries. Possibilities include changes to federal mental-health programs and modernization of gun-tracking efforts by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

SNIP

Obama’s advisers have calculated that the longer they wait, the more distance there is from the Newtown massacre and the greater the risk that the bipartisan political will to tackle gun violence will dissipate.

“This is not something that I will be putting off,” Obama said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” in an interview broadcast last Sunday.

At the White House meeting, Stanek said, “the vice president indicated that there was a very short timeline for him to get back to the president with his recommendations because the American public has a short memory.”

Sounds like they are afraid all will collapse around them and they will end up with no loaf.

>> that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers,

Everyone must pay an FFL dealer $150+ to sell, trade, or give a gun to another citizen

>>track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database,

Full Registration!! Then, “turn em in, Mr and Mrs America.”

>>strengthen mental health checks,

An expensive psych eval (not covered by ObamaCare, of course) to buy and keep your guns

>>and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors

How much stiffer do they need to be? Summary execution at dawn? People that shoot up schools do not follow laws.

Sure they do. Look at the results of the election.

DON’T FALL FOR IT! This bill will have everything in it that the anti-gunners have wanted for the last 50 years!

It has always been about handguns. Assault rifles are just a decoy to try and get their anti-gun foot in the door.

Once they get a ban on AWs then they will use the same reasons to go after handguns.

John Kennedy killed with a 5 shot bolt action rifle.

Bobby Kennedy with a .22 Iver Johnson Cadet revolver.

George Wallace wounded with a 5 shot Charter Arms .38spl revolver.

Gerald Ford attacked with a 7 shot 1911 semi auto.

Edmond OK post office with two National Guard 7 shot 1911 pistols.

Ronald Reagan and Jim Brady with an RG-14 .22 revolver.

What do they all have in common? NONE over 7 rounds, yet after each one came a cry of panic to ban them.

Don’t fall for their claims of “moderation”.

I get the impression it already is. Outside of the media’s “active measures” (which seem to be getting increasingly desperate to fan any remaining flames) , I’m really not seeing any lasting squawking about gun control among people.

May I suggest to Obama and the democrats a “solution”...

Make it worthwhile for each American to stay away from guns, by paying each and every person at least $200/year, for each member of the household.

Americans get bribed for a lot of other things anyway, so, this can’t be that much more egregious.

And what’s $200 per person anyway? It’s just peanuts in comparison to the other giveaway programs that Obama and the democrats have used in the last 4 years.

Along with the free stuff that is already being used, the free gun money will probably cost less than the free “Obamafoan” program.

Just more penalties the prosecutors give away during plea negotiations. There are mandatory add ons for criminal use of guns in almost all jurisdictions and it seems they are hardly ever used.

One reason the masters of media manipulation are going to be making a major attempt for this issue to be in the headlines the next few weeks is to keep the economic news out.

Don't want to let the sheeple know Dear Leader has raised taxes!

How about mandatory prison for politicians that send assault rifles to the Mexican drug cartels?

Post the bills here. The bills are written on government time and government money. If any gun control vote happens in the House, post every name, every yea and nay vote. Avoid paying attention to the cult of celebrity propaganda. Obama cannot be a dictator, and Boehner is not the only Republican voting in the House.

The “White House” can “weigh” all it wants. Anti-Second-Amendment bills won’t get the votes, unless those few fascist constituents behind the bills want even less private spending and revenues (default sooner). They will realize sooner or later, that about 2/3rds of our nation—from every class and demographic—is already nonpolitical because of too many violations of constitutional freedoms so far.

For every anti gun measure the democrats try, we need a pro gun measure that would ease existing restrictions on guns.

The GOP has to stop playing defense and press the attack once in a while.

Ever since 9/12/2001, I’ve been saying we’ve got more to worry about from the US government than any terrorists.

I wonder if anyone believes me yet? Or does everyone still think I’m a kook?

Sure, whatever. I’m a Losertarian KOOK who thinks the US government would like to go after guns and has no interest in protecting the American sheeple, er, people. I must just Hate America First!

Oh well, let me say standard FREEper things:

I am in FEAR of ISLAM! Muslims hide behind every door looking to take my guns away!!!!!

SAVE ME UNCLE SAM!!!! SAVE ME! BE MY POLITICAL MESSIAH!!

Its very difficult to drive anywhere and not come within 1000 feet of a school. That law is impossible to comply with which is their intent.

The part of giving firearms to minors probably means they want to make it illegal to let your minor shoot a gun.
