LOGANVILLE, Ga. —A woman hiding in her attic with children shot an intruder multiple times before fleeing to safety Friday.

The incident happened at a home on Henderson Ridge Lane in Loganville around 1 p.m. The woman was working in an upstairs office when she spotted a strange man outside a window, according to Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman. He said she took her 9-year-old twins to a crawlspace before the man broke in using a crowbar.

But the man eventually found the family. "The perpetrator opens that door. Of course, at that time he's staring at her, her two children and a .38 revolver,"

“Slater was shot in the face and neck”

If she had used a shotgun...

There wouldn’t be much of a face left, I’m guessing.

We used to refer to this phenomenon [mult life threatening wounds, with survival likely] as having a “high dirt ball titre.” The theory is: The less the positive contribution to society one makes, the harder they are to kill.

He may have survived five 38 hollow point shots but he would not be driving or running anywhere.

The 38’s are a good bullet, powerful and inexpensive but you really need the stopping power of hollow point, the regular 38 will go right through you as four of her 5 connecting shots did. The danger is that someone behind the guy getting shot could be shot also. The hollow points stay put in the perp and leave a very big hole and cause a lot of bleeding and most importantly, a lot of pain.

Got to hand it to the woman, bluffing that she would continue to shoot with an empty gun, fantastic. The only thing missing is her telling him to make her day.

It is my belief you should ALWAYS kill an intruder.

I wouldn’t want to think about what this person would do in 15 years when he’s released.

Why is everyone picking on a .38 6-shooter? Could’ve been a 5-shooter like mine, too. Did the job it had to do. The guy is on life support and was disabled. They don’t all have to be dead.

You are right; this was a good outcome. The criminal was stopped, and the family is uninjured. That is always an outcome to celebrate.

However, a dead criminal is cheaper for the community and safer for other families - who could otherwise be the next victims. The recidivism rate for criminals is quite high (this guy has six arrests since 2008 and just got out of prison in August), and dead solves that problem permanently, protecting my family and yours too. In the same situation as this woman, I would shoot to stop the threat and stop shooting as soon as the intruder no longer posed a threat. The difference is that I would be delivering a whole lot more muzzle energy, and my odds of stopping the threat permanently are much better.

Black on white crime. Obama’s people. This thug had been arrested six times since 2008. Why in the world is this guy on the streets. Now a woman that defended herself will have to live with this memory for the rest of her life, plus probably legal action and potentially being sued by the criminal. Too bad she didn’t kill this piece of human excrement.

With the organs damaged that would be some angle of entry wound for him to have been shot in the face and neck. I guess a neck wound could clip the top of a lung, but the stomach and liver? I think she probably hammered away on center mass - just like she should have.

Even though the guy survived, you really can't fault the woman's shooting. She did a nice head-to-torso placement of her rounds and tagged him 5 of 6. He was apparently just lucky.

Indeed, 3 rounds to vital organs in the torso and two rounds to the head.

He is extremely lucky no matter how you cut it. People will suggest more powerful calibers, but very few thugs would survive what she just delivered from a .38, and the fact of the matter is that we know that she can shoot that revolver.

This is a great argument for high capacity magazines. If she were not such a good shot, or if there were multiple perps, she would have needed more rounds. And she would have needed them in the gun, not the drawer.

Final note, this is the best written news article about home defense that I've ever read. It correctly identified the perp and the victim and it also correctly identified the critical nature of the shooter's actions. Kudos to this reporter.

So, what do YOU think would transpire during the 15 minutes it would take for the cops to get there?

You just won the stupidest post of the day and its only 9 am!

Or having to consider that you might have to defend yourself in a lawsuit because of the insane society we now live in where up is down and any attorney can change rationality, reality, and morality using his tongue filled with deception. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - Satan was only a musician part time; his real profession - an attorney

And you did not read his final sentence. It was untagged sarcasm, not his true opinion.

This is why you want an autoloader. 17 rounds would have done the job just fine. Glad it worked out for her though. If Diane Feinstein had her way the lady and her kids would be dead.

Don't blame the attorneys. They're simply doing their jobs. Blame the juries and judges that buy into the crap.

Great argument for 30-round magazines, as well...

And select-fire AR-15s or M4's with short barrels without any law, permit, tax stamp, registration or government interference. Short barrels provide the maneuverability needed in tight spaces. As for the projectile used, AR-15 platforms have many options beyond 5.56mm.

This is from Wikipedia:

In 1977, NATO members signed an agreement to select a second, smaller caliber cartridge to replace the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge.[10] Of the cartridges tendered, the 5.56×45mm NATO was successful, but not the 55 gr M193 round used by the U.S. at that time. The wounds produced by the M193 round were so devastating that many[11] consider it to be inhumane.[12][13] Instead, the Belgian 62 gr SS109 round was chosen for standardization. The SS109 used a heavier bullet with a steel core and had a lower muzzle velocity for better long-range performance, specifically to meet a requirement that the bullet be able to penetrate through one side of a steel helmet at 600 meters. This requirement made the SS109 (M855) round less capable of fragmentation than the M193 and was considered more humane.

I reload both M193s and M855s, as well as a number of other 5.56 loads and for that matter a number of other calibers. The each have their own purpose. And yes, they each have their own high capacity magazines.

WARNING: the following link contains gory images of a M193 wound. http://forums.second-amendment.org/index.php?topic=4520.0
