House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) was reelected on a 220 to 192 vote by his colleagues Thursday despite last minute grumblings that opposition from within his own party would derail the embattled politician as retribution for his leadership on controversial issues including the recent fiscal cliff deal.

Boehner ran unopposed within his own party, contrary to speculation that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) might challenge him for the position. Just prior to the vote, Cantor told CNN that Boehner would “absolutely” be reelected. Cantor voted against the fiscal cliff deal, which raised taxes on a majority of Americans, but he voted for Boehner for speaker.
However, Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.) told Human Events after the vote that “arm twisting” on Boehner’s behalf was “very intense” with threats that Republicans would lose plum committee assignments or campaign donations from the National Republican Congressional Committee if they opposed the speaker’s reelection.
Huelskamp is one of four Republican lawmakers who lost key committee assignments recently for reportedly voting against issues that were important to Boehner.
“The intimidation and pressure was intense, there are a lot of people that wanted to vote no and today, the last call, the last twisting of arms, convinced them not to do that,” Huelskamp said.
“And certainly my vote was one of no confidence. I want conservative leadership, and that has not been provided by the speaker,” Huelskamp said.
Asked specifically who was intimidated to cast their votes for Boehner, Huelskamp declined to name names.
Huelskamp did add that one freshman lawmaker was called prior to the vote and told their committee seat was “probably gone if you vote your conscience.”

I DO want Levin type conservatives to win. The GOPe keeps it up and I’ll have to run in the primary.

Ronald Reagan, a former Democrat, when asked why he left the Democrat Party said something to the effect that, “I didn’t leave the Democrat Party. The Democrat Party left me.”
Well, after 48 years of being a loyal registered Republican, I know that I have not left the party of my youth. That party has left me. Accordingly, I no longer consider myself a Republican and will be changing my voter registration to Independent. I will continue to support conservative Republicans.
Unfortunately, I live in California where my RINO Republican Congresswoman, Mary Bono Mack who ran a horrible campaign was defeated by an ultra left wing Democrat who posed as a moderate. And then we have the obnoxious Boxer and her cohort Feinstein.
With Obama, Biden, Boxer, Fineswine and now Raul Ruiz, I have to ask whether there is any hope. Surely, not from the likes of Boehner and Cantor. As for the Republican Party, it is dead here in California and on life support at the national level.
Washington would not be crying. he’s seen this type of government before.
He’d be pissed and loading his weapon.
That can keep your money out of the hands of the Establishment Republicans, but it won't help get true conservatives elected.
So, get someone like Sarah Palin to set it up and run it.
In Texas, we cannot change parties until March 2014, and the only way we can “change” is to vote in a Democratic primary!
Ultimately, it is the Republican primary voters who have killed the party; they are too uninformed to pick good nominees. These Republicans know how to make money to pay their “fair share”, but they can’t pick good candidates.
I don’t know Raul Ruiz, but I know November 6 was a bad day not just for the Romneys but for the Macks as well! In fact, it was a very bad day for all conservatives. We should have seen it coming.
Don’t you think these same low information Republican voters will be pushing for Jebbie in 2016? Boehner might even endorse first to get the ball rolling.

Yeah, notice that Boner and Romney are/were real good at attacking their own, but when it comes to the opposition, not so much! Boner is the biggest disgrace the Republicans have ever has as a leader. Note to self, go change registration to IND.

That's because the city people elect the Senators rather than the State Legislatures...as is was originally designed.
