Pretty common to have a pool at the high school around here—middle school less so.

I was rather surprised to learn that some schools, especially high schools, in poorer neighborhoods, frequently have a problem with adults coming on to school grounds for all sorts of bad reasons.

In one such school, they had to post an armed security guard in the gym, because adults would show up, take the basketball away from the kids, and start playing basketball.

The security guard was initially surprised because their attitude was, “Should I have not done that?”, not grasping the difference between a school and a public park with a basketball court. But he soon soured of the stupidity, and was clear that if they didn’t leave, right now, he was half inclined to shoot them.

Even then, much of the time, the jerks would try to take the school’s basketball with them, claiming it was their own, despite the large print on it identifying it as the property of the school. When they surrendered the ball, it would be with a string of curses.

His team of armed guards at the school were busy all day, only a fraction of the time with students.

OK I know you meant "mental health" but I had a LOL image of an exam: "OK, who's better, Black Death, or Mötley Crüe?"

The school complex has a pool and a skating rink that is shared with the community and surrounding areas. Admission to rink is discounted to Town residents, and is used by many from surrounding areas. Very nice friendly community center feel to it. I have also seen this type of arrangement in towns in other states, Massachusetts, Illinois, and California.

He said he wanted to retrieve an item of clothing he left in the pool area over the weekend, according to Mamaroneck Police.

Is swimming a big winter sport in New York? I'm from California, so I'm not too familiar with how folks Back East entertain themselves this time of year.

Where I grew up the cluster of three schools (elementary, middle, and high) had the pool at the middle school. It was open to the public evenings and weekends during the school year. Plenty of lakes to swim in during the summer - but used for ice fishing in the winter!

I grew up and went to school in Townville, PA in the 70's.

We had a rifle range down in the basement of the school.

During hunting season we took our guns to school and put them in our lockers and after school on the ride home on the bus I would have the driver drop me off about a mile from home and would hunt my way back to my parents place!

Hell I remember my mom giving my older brother $35.00 to buy a 30-06 from one of his friends at school and carrying it home on the bus!

I sure miss those days!
