'Fiscal Cliff' Deal Punishes Work, Rewards Unemployment

The "fiscal cliff" deal approved by the Senate in a 89-8 vote early this morning, and which is under consideration by the House of Representatives today, punishes work and rewards unemployment. The deal fails to renew a payroll tax holiday that had been in effect for two years, with the result that working families could see their tax bill rise by up to $2,000. Meanwhile, the deal extends unemployment benefits for a full year--and as economist Robert Barro has demonstrated, longer benefits lead to higher unemployment.

Effectively, Washington has decided to create new penalties for work, and new incentives for staying home.

The Business Insider also points to the regressive nature of the "fiscal cliff" deal, in that payroll taxes will rise on working families while households that rely on dividend earnings have avoided a large tax increase.

I have problem trying to believe that we can survive as a country.

And the GOP orchestrated this theft by embracing Democrat's principles of higher taxes.

My question is why do we need a GOP at all if they just go along with them?

Does this imply you can get 3 years of unemployment?

Ah c’mon things aren’t hopeless. Just bring back all those jobs exported by phoney free trade and the unemployment roster will be small like it used to be.

We must, as a Country, shame the lazy, the indolent, and, yes, the unemployed.

To Hell with Marxism!

As I understand it, the law which increased unemployment bennies to 99 weeks is extended for one year. It's still 99 weeks (which is outrageous), not more than that. But if that law had not been extended, it would go back to what it was before 2008, a minimum of 26 weeks in most states.

The LAW OF EFFECT shows us that you generally receive more of the behavior you reward and less of the behavior you punish.

The Dems spin up a pork-stuffed “fix” to the fiscal cliff problem and vote to pass it 3 minutes after it’s handed to them, obviously without reading it.

The GOP House votes to approve the same bill, with no changes, no added cuts, nothing. They just rolled over.

So who in Congress actually “represents” us and what we want?

Oh wait ... we’ve still got the sequester cuts decision coming in two months, right about the same time as the vote to raise the debt limit.

Will anybody “represent” our positions then? Will anybody do the right thing, or even ask us what we want? Didn’t think so.

Burn it down.

As it says in the article, it punishes work and rewards unemployment AND those who rely on dividend income. So Obama’s phone lady and Warren Buffet have been rewarded and the middle class is screwed.
