BREAKING: Illinois Bill to Ban All Modern Firearms

UPDATE: Click here for the latest details on the gun ban and ammunition magazine registration bill, which includes new regulations for gun ranges.
Press release:
“The ISRA has learned from a credible source that Illinois Senate President John Cullerton [above] will introduce a so called ‘assault weapons’ ban on Wednesday when the legislature returns for its ‘lame duck’ session. Cullerton hopes to ramrod the bill through and get it to Governor Quinn for signature by Friday. If he is successful at doing so, nearly every gun you currently own will be banned and will be subject to confiscation by the Illinois State Police . . .
“Based on what we know about Cullertons bill, firearms that would be banned include all semiautomatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns. Pump action shotguns would be banned as well. This would be a very comprehensive ban that would include not only so-called ‘assault weapons’ but also such classics as M1 Garands and 1911-based pistols. There would be no exemptions and no grandfathering. You would have a very short window to turn in your guns to the State Police to avoid prosecution.”
TTAG’s sources tell us there will be two bills: one for semi-automatic rifles, lever guns, shotguns and handguns with certain features (e.g., threaded barrels); and one for ammunition magazine capacity.
Mags would be limited to 10 rounds and owners of existing magazines holding more than 10 rounds would have to register them with the state police.
One [non-ISRA] gun guy on the front lines in the Land of Lincoln tells TTAG that the odds of the bills going through are 50 – 50. He advises gun owners both in and out of state to call Senate President Cullerton at 217 782 2000 and/or find another legislator to pester at ilga.gov.
“If gun owners around the country melt the phone lines in the next three days we can push this thing back . . . that would be a tremendous morale boost ahead of federal legislation.”

I’ll believe it when they go into East St. Louis and rip the guns out of the hands of all the gang-bangers.
They’re allowed, true, but it’s really stupid, and means that I won’t be taking any jobs in Illinois if I can help it.

Seems like the criminals who run Chicago like what they've done so well ~ #1 murder capital of the United States ~ they want to extend that to the whole state.
Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Wisconsin and Iowa Governors would be well advised to send in their state police to seize the Illinois legislature and state house crowd and imprison them for an indefinate period. What Illinois is proposing to do is a clear and present danger to everyone in the surrounding states.

Leftist wingnuts just don’t or won’t accept the fact that the American citizen has a fundamental right to firearms.
They would be laughable if they were not so terribly dangerous in their intentions.

Oh really?
Would you bet the lives of your children on that?
Has the house stopped anything at all from going through?
Is it possible that it is you who is the moron?

I guess you don’t get it. They want law abiding folks to turn in their guns. The gangs would be their shock troops. Legalize all drugs thus converting the gangs to the new homeland security department.

I’d not be surprised if MN follows suit, or tries.
To them, these are laboratories of dhimmitude rather than
laboratories of democracy.

Hmm.
Opportunity knocks. Open a gun shop selling black powder arms. Remington 1858 New Army with say a couple of extra cylinders could be a very formidable weapon. Pietta has it in a "police" model with a short barrel. Fun, Fun, Fun in ChitCargo.

Someday, maybe, you’ll find this statement of yours again and think “God what was I thinking?” and it was an off the cuff emotional response.
At least I hope so. Because I’d hate to think you clearly thought it through in light of all the caving the GOP does and then posted it.
That would be a level of stupid that most cannot fathom.

Disarm law abiding citizens of Illinois... And that somehow will make everyone safer?
Good job by the State Legislators helping to continue to convince out-of-staters to NOT move there. Not to visit. Not do set up shop there. To simply watch the socialist mayhem slowly work it’s way towards abject failure.
Heck, when I land at O’Hare for a layover... better believe I don’t stray far from the airport as it is.

You can’t even drive through there or fy over there with your guns. I recently went hunting in SD. We stopped for gas in my plane in IL. The line guy told us horror stories of TSA hanging at the airports during hunting season and inspecting airplanes stopping for fuel. If they found “bad” guns per IL. law it was hell for the hunters/pilots. We skipped IL. on the way home.

Moronsville at work! You could pass his bill and the thugs would still be killing each other. They, obviously, do not care about any gun law, let alone the statute book in general. There is no reason to live in Illinois, thanks to the Democrats.
To: GraceG
Time to move to... That is a recipe for concentrating 2A proponents in more concentrated areas for easier disarming.
Instead, I think it better to resist everywhere possible, and reserve moving for other reasons. We need to deal with the disarming stupidity EVERYWHERE it raises its unconstitutional head.

Good job by the State Legislators helping to continue to convince out-of-staters to NOT move there. Not to visit...Ain't that the truth? I was last in Chicago in 2005, when I had to be there (estate settlement). Vowed to never come back to that state...and I haven't and never will.
To: neverdem
This is a trial run at the state level for Feinstein’s bill or zero’s EO. Let’s see how they will go after the resistors. If enough resist, they can’t SWAT team everybody??? Gun owners might also consider buying some warehouse space in WI. If gun owners dare to go down, they might want to make a stand with all their weapons and friends at one location and ambush the SOBs.
Second and fourth amendment are up in smoke in ILL.

“They’re allowed”
Why? Why hasn’t the 2nd amendment been “incorporated” along with other sections of the Bill of Rights judges arbitrarily prefer?
To: neverdem
It’s all political. The leftists don’t want people they disagree with to own guns.
To: neverdem
The citizens of Illinois can always refuse to cooperate. Their defense is the Second Amendment.
To: neverdem
I guess over 530 murders in Chicago was just not enough to quench the liberal blood lust. No, they have to ban guns for all law abiding citizens so all law abiding citizens can become soft targets for criminals. With the whole state virtually a gun free zone, criminals will have the run of Illinois.

Remington 1858 New Army with say a couple of extra cylinders could be a very formidable weapon. Pietta has it in a "police" model with a short barrel. I have thought the exact same thing recently. I have looked into it, and they are very nice weapons, and moderately priced (~$200, plus $60 per additional cylinder). And a .44 caliber bullet is quite formidable, whether propelled by black powder or modern propellents. Worked for a lot of guys in the West back in the day... And you don't get on anyone's list, since these are not considered worthy of background checks, etc. Quite a perk in my book...

HaHA! When is turn in your drugs day!
Funny thing The rest of the modern world will move forward and Chicago will be killing people with Knives, Swords, Poison, Baseball bats, Cars, Plastic bags, Tire Irons, and any other blunt force item of questionable nature, and rocks! Hell we’ll just continue to shoot em!

If the IL RATs are dumb enough to pass this bill, its enforcement will be enjoined immediately by a federal judge (or by the 5th Circuit), which would be the third time in three years that IL is b1tch-slapped for its gun-grabbing by the federal judiciary.

If you ban every semi-auto with no grandfathering, why would anyone need a 10 round magazine?
I don’t think this or anything close to it will pass or survive longer than 2 minutes without a successful court challenge, but...
Mr. Cullerton, there are at least 1.4 million legal gun owners in Illinois. There are about 3,600 employees (note, that’s employees, not patrol officers) of the Illinois State Police. How do you plan on collecting the firearms from those 1.4 million people? Do you really expect the State’s Attorneys of Illinois to spend the time and money to prosecute them all if they refuse to become defenseless?
