Emergency legislation to avoid the economy-threatening fiscal cliff ran into vehement New Year's Day opposition from House Republicans, casting doubt on the divided government's ability to prevent widespread tax increases and painful, across-the-board federal spending cuts.
"I do not support the bill. We are looking, though, for the best path forward," House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., declared after a closed-door meeting of his party's rank and file.
While Speaker John Boehner took no public position, an attempt to add spending cuts was all but certain before the leadership called for a final House vote on the measure that cleared the Senate hours earlier in a pre-dawn vote of 89-8...

Start with a TRILLION and work your way up.
Hold out for way more cuts. Do not be intimidated by Obama. He is just the president. You have the power. USE IT! Tell the public “why”. They want spending reduced. Why don’t you?
A One-Party government, some with D's and some with R's, but nevertheless, they're all the same.
There is NO VOICE of the real people who are being screwed to pander for votes from Illegals, Banks, Lobbyists, Unions, and the inner-city tribal parasites. With those living off others at near-50% levels now, there is NO WAY that working folks, self-responsible folks, or those who have pride in paying their own way through life can EVER get back to the U.S. Constitution's intent, or having their earnings (and soon, their Savings) confiscated to buy votes and pay for the vote-buying of the past 10 years....
Buy guns, and buy ammo.....we're surely gonna need it soon.
More than none?
How dare those Republicans cut spending! Of all the nerve!
If Obama will not stop spending, cut every one of the 11 appropriations by 5 % and let him deal with that until he sees the light.
Do we the people have to come down there to the capitol and kick your soft political butts AGAIN?
Okay, so the Senate waits until the last second to amend and pass original House legislation, and that makes it “emergency” legislation. Got it!
It appears that House conservatives have leadership by the short hairs. First break We the People have had in this debate yet.
Leadership knows they won’t get a bill passed without conservative support and they further know if they reach across the aisle to Dems the base will go into open revolt. Which would be the effective end of the Republican Party.
We do...
There is no cliff. the media is wanting a raising of taxes that will only cover less than a week of government spending. this is their cliff. The media says if the GOP don't raise taxes on the rich then the country will go over a cliff. No bigger lie has ever been told over and over again to everyone in the country so that everyone is talking about this stupid cliff but no one knows what the cliff is only what the media says “ that the GOP saying no to taxes on the rich will put the country over a cliff” = pure bs lies. there is no deficit reduction at all in this stupid bill but an increase of 330 billion in spending
The U.S.A is a dictatorship and the news media are the dictators.
call GOP Congressmen in the House, tell them not to vote for this ridiculous Bill , nor any deal ,there is no cliff as that fiscal cliff is media lies to force them to agree to tax increases.
Congress switchboard number: (202) 224-3121
tell them to adjourn ,no vote , tell them nuts. the media, Obama, Pelosi want this bill passed. don't give it to them. and no a meteor will not hit the Earth as the media makes it seem like with this fiscal cliff bs
call tomorrow if busy or closed today:
Congress switchboard number: (202) 224-3121
The R's have cut taxes, not Gov't.
One thing is clear.
The closer the representatives are to the people, the better their hearing is.
Getting rid of the 17th amendment might be a good way of reminding senators who they represent.

And no one in the media had the thought to ask what would this additional revenue be used for?
The U.S. and world are in deep economic trouble, no matter what! The real questions are: For how long; is there an actual “end point” to all of this “mess”; and, is there no actual “end point”, ever, until the world, actually and officially, ends?
If this passes the House, everyone registered Republican should switch their voter registration to Independent. They are choosing to ignore and alienate us anyway. Maybe doing this en masse will help reinforce the message that we are tired of their crap and are looking for more serious representation.
I pity the GOP Rino Monkeys that vote for this bill.
I hope most of them can line up jobs with Trent Lott’s Lobbying Firm
and other k-street money changer companies, because many will not
survive walking the plank for Bonehead.

The House would have to cut 330 billion right off the top,
just to remove the pork the senate added.
Eff em all.
I think, so long as were not going to cut spending, the tax rates on everybody SHOULD go up. We need to tax at the rate that were spending. Everybody needs to have skin in the game.
I’m retired and part of my income is SS. I would gladly take a 10% cut so long as every government expenditure was also cut by 10%. That would mean everything including defense, social programs and all government salaries etc. In the long run such a cut would be good for me...
Then cut another $1.2 trillion this year and every successive year just to not add PRINCIPLE to the national debt. Never mind pay down the national debt.
“Congress switchboard number: (202) 224-3121”
All the mailboxes are full. What a surprise—NOT.
We have spend 3/4 of a Trillion dollars since 2008.....paying people not to work.
Take that out of the bill, and then let it pass.
No Fiscal Cliff Deal? 44% Blame GOP, 36% Obama
Most voters still want President Obama and Congress to avoid the fiscal cliff of big tax hikes and automatic across-the-board spending cuts scheduled to kick in next Tuesday, but fewer than ever think a deal is likely. Voters tend to blame congressional Republicans more than the president for the impasse.
How can Dems control 2/3 of the government, but get less than half the blame?
Answer: a complicit socialist media presstitutes (like Administration Propaganda) runs cover for them.
well I agree everyone should have skin in the game. However you won't get much going after poor people that don't pay taxes now. It might be the right thing to do but it won't counteract the spending. We should starve the beast and REDUCE taxes. Otherwise there is zero pressure to cut spending.
Also - why worry about the debt? Those young people are voting for Obama in droves. Even my own children. We have attempted to teach many of them and work for the right thing to reduce spending and debt burden on future generations. But no one is listening to us. We are old and will die out. So these young people will have to deal with the mess.
About 84 times more, to be exact.
The current "deal" has 42 times more tax increases than spending cuts. Anyone who thought the "deal" discussions couldn't get any worse...
It’s NOT about cutting spending! It is only about WHO gets to dole out the $$ to their supporters and in what amounts. That is why The Republicans raised the debt ceiling. This allowed both sides to fund their supporters, with the promise of more to come after the Presidential election.
Where the GOP missed the boat was failing to understand that there are many more middle class and lower class Americans than there are upper middle and upper class working and business voters. By keeping the working class unemployed and on extended benefits while expanding benefits for the poor, Obama jumped beyond traditional party politics based upon party platforms and moved directly to the quid pro quo direct purchase of votes.
The pubbies have been trying to transfer payments through business growth with favors to industry by legislation. Obama cut out the middleman (Congress) and went factory direct. He has taken the giveaway game to a level the GOP cannot match. Too bad the GOP compromised their principles for a congressional seat.
Time for a huge midterm primary effort and then a new party for 2016.
It's always interesting how the skanks and scumbags at the Associated Press describe only "spending cuts" as "painful".
The principle was demolished long ago; it is no longer subject to adding or subtracting.
The principal, on the other hand, keeps increasing...
Sure they will, with plenty of votes to spare.
I read a Reuters story yesterday that said the bill only needed some "moderate" Republicans to join the rats in the House for passage. The problem Boehner has is that he can't bring a bill to the floor for a vote and let it pass mostly by Democrat votes. That would show the party base that the rats can run roughshod over the GOP with barely a fight. Boehner and the Republicans would look like complete fools, and Boehner would be doomed as Speaker.
” Voters tend to blame”
Blame = Credit if people understood what was going on...
Not me. I want every last freaking dime I got coming to me after spending a lifetime working and having half of it confiscated and dumped down the government toilet for rat politicians to buy the votes of their moocher base. That social security check is my casino money.
“Not me.”
I understand the sentiment, but if I could pay a couple of hundred a month as my part to fix the system for my kids and grand kids I would be happy to do so....
You would be far better off taking that $200 a month and accumulating gold coins to stash away for your grandchildren. Buy it off grid and tell nobody - - save what you can in a way the scumbag government and the Democrat moochers can’t get their filthy paws on it.
“You would be far better off taking that $200 a month and accumulating gold coins to stash away for your grandchildren.”
I’ve got a lot of money Lancey. Fixing the system would be just as much for your grand children as mine...
I appreciate your sentiments and your optimism. I really do.
But I have become cynical. Downright jaded. When, in 2008, the majority of American voters deliberately elected an African communist as President and Commander-in-Chief I figured the end was near. When the same growing moocher class re-elected that scumbag I knew it was all over. The parasites outnumber the hosts now, and America is dead. The Democrats have won.
It’s every man for himself now. Hunker down, stay below the radar, and take care of your family. But most of all, have some fun Personally, I’m having a blast! My Rottie puppy is driving me nuts, but sitting in my lawn chair and watching my chickens is strangley relaxing. For exercise I cut, split, and stack firewood for my woodstove. It’s a 2200 btu cast-iron job with a cooktop!
Spring is coming, and I want to expand the garden this year.
FRegards,
LH
I don’t know. A bill as presently spoken about, which might include spending cuts to be re-sent to the Senate, would gain no support from the Dems. Let’s wait for the final bill and then we can judge.
so what does a party of sellout Republicans equal? Pubbies should have drawn the line long ago....but we know how that turned out.
A target rich environment for primary challenges.
Why is that a and/or proposition?
Reduce spending AND get the freeloaders/’poor’ skin in the game by making they start to pay taxes. Cut off the gravy train to the brood mares and the lazy.
Cut the bullshit and DO IT. If you’re going to be cast as the devil, make it worth the ink.
“When the same growing moocher class re-elected that scumbag I knew it was all over. The parasites outnumber the hosts now, and America is dead.”
Not true... the Hosts in a situation like this can cease being Hosts at any time they choose. THAT’S when the music dies...
