Several Republicans took to the House floor Tuesday afternoon to slam the Senate-brokered "fiscal cliff" bill that was passed earlier in the morning, calling it a rush job that raises taxes and delays most of the spending cuts planned for this year.
"So we find ourselves again with a bill that reflects not financial wisdom, but the seductive spirit that pervades this town," Rep. Scott Rigell (R-Va.) said.
"Leaders in Washington continue to over-promise. They're likes salespeople who tell their customer they can have an $30,000 car but only pay $18,000 for it. Who doesn't like that deal?"
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) said the Senate bill only allows the government to continue its debt spending spree.
"We're taking up a bill that will not do anything to cut spending. I'm embarrassed for this generation," he said.
The Senate-passed bill mostly resolves the tax issue, but delays the planned $109-billion spending sequester. The sequester would be postponed for two months, a change that is offset with $24 billion in some cuts and new tax revenue.
But many conservatives see the bill as one that raises some taxes now, and only promises to make deeper cuts later. House Government Reform and Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said he was disappointed in the deal, but indicated he would vote for it.
"I wish I could say this was a proud moment," Issa said. "It isn't. We're kicking the can down the road.
"I may vote for what comes on the floor … but I tell you, I won't do it thinking we've accomplished anything here today, other than the smallest finger in a dike that in fact has hundreds of holes in it."
Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) sharply criticized the Senate for so quickly approving these changes in the dead of night, just after the new year was rung in.
"The Senate boasts it is America's deliberative body. Today, that claim rings hollow," Brooks said.
"The House must postpone this vote until Congress and the American people have time to study and evaluate this extraordinarily complex legislation, and its impact on taxes, revenue, the economy, our debt and a myriad of other issues."
Brooks also said he would vote against the Senate bill if it came up for a vote.
"I will not condone with my vote a process that denies the American people an opportunity to participate in their republic on issues of this magnitude," he said.
Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas) suggested that the Congress should join "Spending Anonymous." He suggested a 12-step program starting with an admission that Congress is "addicted to spending someone else's money," and ending with the creation of a support group that meets regularly "to confess our addiction."
A few Democrats also indicated disappointment with the bill, although most are expected to support the deal that the Obama administration helped negotiate.
"Like the movie Groundhog Day, this government in two months will arrive at another crisis of debt, of spending and taxes," Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) said of the two-month sequester delay.
Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) said the bill misses a chance for greater reform.
"We cannot continue to have by far the world's largest and most expensive military, the world's lowest taxes, the most expensive and inefficient healthcare system, and continue to allow our country's infrastructure to fall apart all while America grows and ages," he said. "This agreement represents absolutely the least we could have done under these circumstances."
Sure is easy to do.
Will the House pass this thing? I hope not.
The “fiscal cliff” deal still ignores the ZeroCare tax increases that begin this year and, in addition to whatever “deal” is eventually reached, still will have a negative impact on the economy. The issues under discussion conveniently ignore ZeroCare.
But, the disease remains. zero and the Congress are treating the obvious symptoms while ignoring the root cause of the disease. The Congress and the POTUS are all responsible for our poor economic situation and they are applying band-aids when major surgery is required. Having caused the problem means that they can’t fix it.
In the final analysis, the Congress is full of gutless cowards who are terrified of taking the REAL steps necessary for fixing our economic problems and stopping the spending. So, in typical, gutless fashion, they are, once again, kicking the can down the road.
We can rest assured that, barring any unforeseen miracle, we will see this problem again . . . . . . . . worse than it is today.
Why is it that the house is presumed to have an obligation to act on the senate bill, but the senate was not presumed to have an obligation to act on the house bill from back in August, long before the so-called fiscal cliff loomed?
Do NOT vote for this! You have got to listen to reason. If you vote for this, you are going to collapse our economy.
The Senate deal raises taxes on minimum-wage Americans because it does not address the expiration of the payroll tax cut. Under this deal, tax rates for all Americans making over $400, (not $400,000) will go up by 2%.
If the House passes this horror story, there will be a mass exodus from the Repub party. Boehner should be fired, regardless, as well as many other RINOs. No matter what, Repubs will be blamed so the House should stand up for America and its people — not their tragic politics.
Obama will take this INCREASED TAXATION money and spend it. He will NEVER significantly reduce the deficit. Not part of his socialist, anti-American agenda — just TAX AND SPEND.
This is a very dark time for the American Republic.

If Issa is already in the tank then this will sail through the House. 90% of Republicans are cowardly fools. Where is the vaunted Tea Party caucus? They shoudl be screaming “revolt” against this betrayal - instead we see just a few principled House members standing against this madness.

The news media came up with this “fiscal cliff” bs to control everyone’s minds. The media has everyone talking about this cliff but who can detail what it is? no one as there is no stupid cliff.It’s just a ploy to destroy the GOP. How is the country going over a cliff as the media says? What is so different now than it has been in past years? nothing.
The U.S.A is a dictatorship and the media are the dictators.
call GOP Congressmen in the House, tell them not to vote for this nor any deal ,there is no cliff as that “cliff” is media lies to force them to agree to tax increases.

Pass it, then be ready to reiterate often, the spending problem caused by socialists. As for the default process, good riddance to big government. Government can’t continue big without real revenues of real value from a large and diverse manufacturing base unimpeded by regulations from top to bottom (local governments).

Why? Because the pubbies have ONCE AGAIN ceded the terms of the debate to the socialists. The pubbies don’t have clue how to play in the same ballpark as the disciples of Alinsky and the 0bamunists.
The HOUSE should have passed a bill making the Bush tax cuts permanent, for all taxpayers. They should have sent that to the Senate along with huge media coverage to tell the people that it now rests with Dirty Harry and the Dhimmi-drats.
Then, they should have passed a (truly) balanced budget; one that spends ONLY anticipated revenues, and sent that to the Senate and Dingy Harry, along with huge media coverage telling the American people that it now rests with the Dhimmi-crats.
But...NO! Once again, they gave the advantage to the socialists by their silence, by their ‘negotiating’ and ‘compromise’.
There is NO compromise with these socialist bastards. The pubbies have yet to learn that simple lesson.
The original bill did originate in the house...this is negotiation...they just have to match up in the end...and the Pres has to sign it.

A 2% increase in the 10% tax rate to 12% is a 20% tax increase, not a 2% tax increase. It is way beyond time for a truth in taxation law such as was done in the seventies for loans disclosures.
On another note, with Republicans like Boehner, McConnell, and Arkansas Rep Tim Griffin (recently made a member of the ways and means committee) believing that the problem in DC is not enough “Revenue” - code for your money for them to spend- I have no doubt we will see “Bi-Partisan” support for the senate bill.
By the way, it seems the true definition of Bi-Partisan is not cooperation between competing parties, but is meant more in the Bisexual meaning, in other words our representatives have no problem voting both ways and see no wrong in voting the expediency of the moment rather than stand for a well defined principle.
