Craig R. Whitney on Living With Guns - A liberal's case for the Second Amendment
Reason ^ | December 21, 2012 | Nick Gillespie & Todd Krainin

"A lot of our gun control measures are aimed at people who would obey the law and get the permits. How does keeping me or you from having a gun really control gun violence in Washington or New York City?" asks Craig R. Whitney, a former New York Times journalist and author of the new book, Living with Guns: A Liberal's Case for the Second Amendment.

From the earliest settlement at Jamestown to the renewed debate over so-called assault weapons in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, gun control has always been contentious. The earliest limitations on gun possession in early America were explicitly racist against blacks and modern gun control was aimed squarely at urban-dwelling Italian immigrants and others who supposedly suffered from poor impulse control.

In the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, advocates of gun control are pushing for renewed bans on various sorts of weapons and greater exclusions based on mental illness. At the same time, the National Rifle Association is pushing for armed guards at every school in the country and excoriating violent entertainment. Neither side is interested in taking a more measured look at what sorts of policies actually work to secure rights and reduce crime.

Whitney sat down before the Newtown shooting to talk with Reason's Nick Gillespie about why liberals should defend the Second Amendment, why gun-related violence has declined over the past 20 years even as gun ownership has increased, his most memorable experience at a shooting range, and more.

About 7 minutes long.

“the National Rifle Association is pushing for armed guards at every school”

This really doesn’t have much to do with the article. If armed policemen are assigned to some or all schools they should be undercover and carrying concealed. Otherwise it’s shoot the officer first. With or without police officers do away with gun free zones and allow anyone who can legally carry do so at the schools.

I’m glad at least a few liberals see the light, they may discover they have common sense and become Conservatives.

Why hasn’t any Republican Representative introduced a bill to repeal the Gun Free School Zones Act? Let’s look alive, people.

And which is a strong argument against such. The shooting occurred in a gun free zone, and we can expand that to the town/city, then the state, then the whole country. Then only the gov. would be armed. Which is what liberal want, as long it i their gov. But which presents a danger which is the main reason for the 2nd Amdt.

Some argue that the gov. be without guns, but which is a denial of the nature of man, which is a liberal delusion.

That said, i have no gun in this crowded city, and do not feel i need one, but uphold the right of stable souls of good character to do so.

Those who are controlled from within by God and conscience need not be gun controlled, or gov. controlled (and without arms the gov., has no real power), but those who are not must be. But when the gov. becomes villainous, and the people are powerless, then the warrant for 2nd Amndt, is understood.

Interesting turnabout since Whitney was one of the worst NYTimes correspondents in So. Vietnam during the war. He almost always wrote negative stories about our successes against the enemy, about the performance of the So. Vietnamese forces, who were continually improving, and the overall situation.

Maybe he likes his pension and wants to stay alive re the Obama generation predators out there. Bet he doesn’t like in the poor part of town.

That's what I was thinking, as well. Once the guard is gone, he might as well have never been there.

I resent that. "Our side" is all about securing rights and reducing crime.

Wise words. That is my crusade for this week, then, to be sure some Representative somewhere acknowledges the failure of the GFSZA by calling for its' repeal.

Again, the verbiage of the Left is utilized, and the point lost.

And the reason why you let the Citizenry arm themselves (otherwise, again, some animals....). At least there’d be no way to know whom or how many; w/out costing a penny.

Why is that so hard to articulate?!
