The highly-anticipated meeting came and went without any immediate clue from congressional lawmakers as to whether they had made any progress toward resolving the impending onset of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts set to take effect on Jan. 1.

But the president is scheduled to deliver a statement from the White House at 5:45 p.m. ET.

A protracted stalemate between Obama-led Democrats and congressional Republicans had prompted Friday's last-ditch meeting.

The same reason you’d buy a 2014 Edsel? The name has been so tarnished and beaten by those on the inside of the party (let alone the media and Dems), no concise plan of action nor detailed reasons have come from the GOP in ages.

Why again should anyone fight to re-establish the GOP name?? Maybe they should start backing gay ‘marriage’, or illegals...Yeah, that’ll bring everyone back to the fold...

What we have got another four years of this mess. The republicans are in bed with the rats. What better do we have to do?

Or perhaps I’m missing something that makes him not able to extend it - you made it sound like it needed a vote. (Or is the vote only needed if he changes the bill - which of course would make it a new bill and require a vote). Sorry if I’m being dense!

In order to extend the Bush tax cuts you need a new bill. If there is no bill, then the tax rates revert back to the Clinton-era tax rates. Of course it requires passage by both houses of Congress and the signature of the President. Where have you been?

From Dec. 17, 2010:

“The bill [that Obama signed], which was largely worked out earlier this month between the White House and Congressional Republicans, extends the Bush-era tax cuts for all Americans for two years, extends unemployment benefits for 13 months and includes a one-year Social Security tax cut, among other measures.”

******************************

Thanks for your patience kabar! The way I had read this 2010 action was that it was Obama (by himself) had extended the cuts. I don’t recall the huge clash and “emergency” that we have now, so I thought it was a simple thing of him just “extending the current bill”. I suppose Obamacare was thick and heavy around that time(?), so perhaps the tax increases and ensuing drama were saved for another day.

Still - I wish the Republicans would lay the burden on Obama - if it was good enough two years ago, it is good enough for today. The economy has not improved that much, even by official numbers. (If any in actual “main street” reality).

McConnell will fold like an old blanket. The fix has been in for weeks. they want to avoid the onslaught of conservative rage so they are putting off until there is no time on the clock. This is such a sickening thing to watch.
217 socialist will sign a request for a vote including 40 republicrats. Boehner will “oppose” but under the rules he will say he has to call for a vote. It will pass and all conservatives will be screwed!! The “deal” will be Tax increases and MORE SPENDING!! It will be the capitulation of our lives!! All hell must then break lose or we are finished!! This is our party!! We out number these socialists 3 to 1 !! Kick them out of our party!! No more McCains. No more Romney. GET THE HELL OUT WE ARE TAKING OVER. Boehner must be voted out on January 3rd!!!email your senators and representative NOW!!We aren’t buying this cave in!!

This fiscal cliff hysteria is intended to cover the real fiscal cliff that is looming over the horizon. If you will remember, Obama wants unfettered control over raising the national debt.

Now he knows that the House, under the Constitution has that power and he does not. He actually tried to make this part of a deal.

Raise the debt limit and do nothing to control the Federal Spending and witness what a REAL FISCAL CLIFF looks like.

We are at the precipice...

By the way, he would like nothing more than the raising of taxes on ALL AMERICANS. I am sure this is beyond his wildest dreams.

Day in and day out saying he is raising taxes on millionaires and billionaires and setting the base line at $250,000 per year. Yeah, Obama is just giddy at the prospects.

The uncontrolled debt limit is the fiscal cliff folks and it is coming.

Now when he asks for the debt ceiling to be increased, it should be a resounding NO.

No kidding, huh? And we both know that the chances of that are 1 in 100.

"The republicans do not deserve to keep the House in 2014. If I feel this way as much as I dislike Nancy Pelosi then millions of others do too."

Dude. Seriously. It's her bill Boehner is proposing...

"At this point I see the democrats with a super majority come November 2014. Hey, I give them this - they worked hard for it."

Puh-leez. Don't be a Freetard like the handwringing bedwetters that lost their collective sh!t after 2008, then hid under the covers before the 2010 GOP Tsunami...said it couldn't happen. Short memories make me laugh.

"Obama's no longer the problem. It's the people who allow Obama to keep acting with these tactics that's the problem."

What, his base? The barely 400K votes in 4 states that put him over the top? You're going to poop yourself over that? Grow a pair...

Remember 400k is for a couple.. So it’s 200k per individual. Previous it was 200k individual/250k couple. Obama change is only on marriage penalty

According to the news, the democrats won big in November yet EVERY news event since has somehow been the blame of the republicans from Hurricane Sandy to the School Mass Murders and the recent northeast snowstorms.

I don’t have a PROBLEM. The republicans are a hell of a lot more conservative than the liberals that are running this country. You want another party? Well I wouldn’t mind it either but it will take decades before a viable, credible conservative party could win, it will be an uphill battle into the wind. We will be fighting media, new immigrants, the takers, and social issues. There isn’t any time left so we better get behind what we have.

As I said on these pages, so to speak, back before the election when Republican/conservative lack of turnout gave us another four years of Obama, in spite of his reduced turnout:
Over the past thirty years [leftists] have taken control of one of the two largest political parties in a country where winner takes all in elections and are busily working to fracture the only opposition they have by encouraging conservatives to leave the Republican Party in the hands of RINOS rather than working to take over the party apparatus as they, the Leftists, have taken over the Democrat Party.

For those who say, "Well, I'm a proud member of the Constitution Party or the Declaration Party or the Conservative Party or the Southern Principled Conservative Party of Holy Ghost Fire on the Mountain Pre-Rapture Remnant of the Real Thing Party and someday we'll be big enough to replace the Republican Party, just like the Temperance Party or the Bull Moose Party did":

Doofuses: we don't live in a parliamentary system where representation is divided proportionally between the losers!

It's winner take all, baby, and the sooner you realize that and stop wasting time fighting like cats and Baptists to multiply the number of me-so-conservative parties the sooner you'll have turned back the liberal encroachment on the existing main opposition party to their main vehicle for political power, the Democrat Party, instead of complimenting yourself on just how wonderfully more conservative your loser party is going to be than the one you deliberately abandoned to leftist takeover.
"Hey, I don't like these liberal bumper stickers on this fully functioning vehicle or the places its driver is taking us, right? So, I've got, like, this great plan to deal with that, 'kay? Instead of tossing the driver out on his butt and getting some more appropriate body detailing and then driving it wherever we want to go, we're going to get out at the next corner, wag our fingers really hard at the driver as he speeds off, and then from scratch build our own new most perfectly conservative vehicle and, someday, maybe, enter that into the race! And won't that glorious day be, oh, so grand?"
And you think Jesus is going to say, "Well done, good and faithful servant for refusing to take back the existing opposition party and, instead, throwing your vote to something that couldn't possibly defeat a known enemy because you thought being considered a more nearly "true" conservative party than any other was more important than actually conserving and preserving the Republic against an ongoing enemy onslaught"?

Dream on.
