Hopefully, there will also be heavy background and psychological tests for those teachers; wouldn’t want the next school shooter to be a deranged teacher.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Why? The 2nd amendment says nothing about heavy background and psychological tests. In Vermont there is no restriction or application needed for concealed carry and the state is very peaceful, no whackadoodles stage shootouts. The bad part there is that schools are “gun free “ zones, which should not be tolerated by Vermonters one bit.It just invites anty potential crazed shooter to wade in for a little target practice.Any teacher who wants to have a concealed weapon in a classroom lock up should be able to have that, no conditions whatsoever, no questions asked. That goes double for any school that is a so called “gun free” zone, which is nothing but a shooting gallery for the mentally ill.

Teachers should meet bi monthly for firearms training on a weekend.

My daughter, FReeper PowerBaby, goes to USU. She tells me that it is quite common for students to be carrying on campus. Logan happens to be one of the safest college towns in America.”

Another factor is Utah will issue CCWs to out-of-state residents. I know several Missourians who have them, and with reciprocity laws, it provides a useful way for people to get permission to carry concealed without showing up on Missouri state lists of CCW permit holders. (Think of the New York newspaper and their interactive map, and you'll know why some CCW permit holders don't want to be on the registry of the state where they actually live.)

Since being involved in public life in Utah usually means being a Mormon, this is giving me some new-found respect for Mormons on at least one point.

I don't care for Mormon doctrine at all, but they seem to have things right when it comes to guns.

(And no, I'm not saying Carry_Okie’s family is Mormon; I don't know and that's not my point. My point is you usually can't get laws passed in Utah if the Mormons are opposed to them, and if the Mormons are supporting something, it's very likely to pass.)

It would be mildly embarrassing if lots of Baptists and Pentecostals teaching in public schools in Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and other Southern states have to go to Utah for special classes in a proven program for armed teachers to coordinate their response to active shooter incidents in schools, but it would be worth it if that protects the kids.

As I said over on another schools-and-guns thread:

http://freerepublic.com/focus/news/2504843/posts?page=37#37

Let's not underestimate the power of armed citizenry to respond when the police aren't yet there, or when the police have been shot as some of the first casualties in a well-planned attack. Muslim terrorists haven't yet attacked many Southern or rural targets in America, and there may be good reasons for that. Disarmed people make helpless targets, and there aren't a lot of disarmed people in the South or other parts of rural America.

My only problem with NRA official Wayne LaPierre’s now famous statement that “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” is that some of those “guys” are female. That's especially true in schools where many and sometimes most of the staff are female. Islamic radicals seem to have a hard time understanding that just because someone wears high heels and a skirt doesn't mean they can't shoot back.

The last thing I want is to see a terrorist attack on a school on American soil, but if, God forbid, something like that does happen, I wouldn't mind at all seeing a 5'1” teacher go on the national news explaining how her years of deer hunting with dad equipped her to conceal herself and move quickly from room to room shooting the subhuman animals in the head who were trying to kill her kids.

Nobody with brain wants to be in a situation like that, but we need to start educating the American mainstream that having lots of guns in a community is a great deterrent which should be encouraged, not a danger to be feared.

Also, we need to work harder at explaining to people who support women's rights that one of the best ways for women to reduce the inherent imbalance in physical power between men and women is for the woman to be well-trained in how to shoot an attacker. A gun makes a great equalizer in gender relations, and I think a fair number of people who don't consider themselves to be conservatives on other issues can be brought around to understand the benefits of promoting gun ownership by women.

“Wouldn’t want the next school shooter to be a deranged teacher....Well, that rules out all democRATs......

No joke....Irrational people with guns are dangerous....In truth, the vast majority of teachers SHOULD NOT be armed....

If you can’t trust them with a gun, why would you trust them with our children or grand children?

Most teachers can probably be trusted, but, there will always be those who cannot be trusted, therefore, the need for psychological tests.

Why? The 2nd amendment says nothing about heavy background and psychological tests.

The 2nd amendment also does not mention anything about deranged or psychologically damaged people. It also doesn't mention anything about people with criminal histories being able to own guns.

The 2nd amendment can stand as written, but there has to be some rules for dangerous people not being able to get them.

The background and psychological screens would not be done for the general population. It would be just for those who are charged with heavy responsibilities where crowds are gathered, especially groups of children.

Correct. And the right to defend one’s life does not depend on anyone proving they are NOT crazy.People are assumed to be sane. Teachers who are hired by a schoolboards are assumed to be sane.

As a matter of fact, despite yout faulty logic, you also are assumed to be sane.

And there should be no “comprehensive” tests or checks on any teacher who wants to have the benefit of being armed. There should be training however, and periodic qualification of training standards.

Even conservatives these days find it challenging not to be liberals who think the world has to proove itself sane before anyone in it can even get a bus ticket.

This is nothing about being liberal or conservative when it comes to gun ownership.

Fact is that, a deranged or psychologically damaged teacher should not be teaching in the first place. Chances are that, that kind of screening is not done right now, or is lacking in comprehensiveness. The idea behind the screening for the teachers is not to keep them from owning or using guns; it’s for the protection of the children from teachers, whether they own guns or not. A teacher is in a special situation, and the children should not be exposed to someone who could create havoc in their lives. Screening those teachers would bring out problems which otherwise would have gone unnoticed from the beginning.

>>Half a second?

Point being, would he ever dare to come in the school when he knows teachers are armed? He would probably go to gun-free mall instead.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade.

I was saying that if a madman comes into a school with a gun ready to rock, teachers with a gun had better be ready to roll and I’m not sure if having a gun in a safe will get it done.

I’m impressed with Ms. Soto’s actions but doubt that she’s the norm although I note that though “she put herself into position to plug the shooter,” she was the one who got plugged instead of having the time to aim and shoot first.
