Utah teachers get free gun training in response to Newtown shooting

Kasey Hansen, a special education teacher from Salt Lake City, Utah, says she would take a bullet for any of her students, but if faced with a gunman threatening her class, she would rather be able to shoot back.

On Thursday, she was one of 200 Utah teachers who flocked to an indoor sports arena for free instruction in the handling of firearms by gun activists who say armed educators might have a chance at thwarting deadly shooting rampages in their schools.

The event was organized by the Utah Shooting Sports Council in response to the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, this month that killed 20 children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The council said it has typically attracted about 16 teachers each year to its concealed carry training courses. But Thursday's event near Salt Lake City, organized especially for educators in the aftermath of Newtown, drew interest from hundreds, and the class was capped at 200 for space limitations.

Free gun training will do them no good, unless they’re also allowed to carry those guns to school. Hopefully, there will also be heavy background and psychological tests for those teachers; wouldn’t want the next school shooter to be a deranged teacher.

Leave it to the locals. No fed intervention. Voluntary basis with 2 weeks at Front Sight for a starter. Those that don’t wish to participate can get advanced life support training. Email, hard mail, call, fax or whatever you need to do to contact your reps and sens and tell them NO on further restrictions on millions of law abiding citizens. This goes for your state assembly persons too. Or whatever they are in your locale.
I read the df wants to reduce to 1 item instead of 2 items during the last “ban”. I suggest grenade launchers might be the item that disqualifies something. Yup, those dang 1911’s with grenade launchers are sure dangerous. What an idiot. (Armed security available 24/7 if requested. Hypocrit much?)

Helping keep mankind warm for 65 years.

I believe UT does allow ccw’s in schools. I don’t know how widespread the law is, but it does include colleges and its students.

I do not know if one can carry legally in Utah k-12 schools, but I do know for a fact that one can carry on college campuses in that State. My daughter, FReeper PowerBaby, goes to USU. She tells me that it is quite common for students to be carrying on campus. Logan happens to be one of the safest college towns in America.

I am a teacher in a public school, and I would love a small biometric safe that I could house a .38 in.

Well, that rules out all democRATs.

Since most teachers are democrats, we might be ruling out most teachers, and we could be back to square one.

DING DING DING! We have a winner!

Of course we have a golden opportunity to both protect the kids and fix the corrupted "public education system" (socialist indoctrination centers)

Fire all the teachers and close the schools. Rent out the buildings to people who actually want to run a school. Let them compete with each other on the basis of learning results, and providing an ultra-secure learning environment for their students.

Would you tell the shooter: “wait a sec while I open this safe?”

They can carry in Utah schools if they have CCW permits.

Most is not all. We only need a few. It may role back some of the feminization of the schools.

A gun in a safe is better than nothing.

“A gun in a safe is better than nothing.”

You might have a half second from the time the shooter spies you. Can you get your gun out of the safe and aimed in less than half a second?

If, OTOH, the gun were on your desktop, you might have the edge on the shooter.

Educating people. Isn't that what schools are for? Hold the classes in them.

Give me a break... If you can’t trust them with a gun, why would you trust them with our children or grand children?

That’s why they have ones that pop open after a correct thumbprint.

Ms. Soto, a teacher murdered by the animal, had time to get a gun from the safe and put herself into position to plug the shooter.

What if a krazy kid takes your gun from the desk. You trust all the students to have access to your gun on or in the desk?
