Les Misérables is the big-screen version of the world's longest-running stage musical (take that, Cats!). Since its 1985 debut, the show has been seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages. Mon Dieu! For this eagerly anticipated adaptation, the Oscar-winning director of The King's Speech, Tom Hooper, shifts his focus from stuttering British royalty to singing French paupers in the 19th century. Victor Hugo's epic tale follows fugitive Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) as he's hunted for decades by relentless Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe), through the Paris Uprising of 1832. Whether you're a Les Mis newbie or a die-hard fan (who can't wait "One Day More"!), you'll want to arm yourself with these fun facts before soldiering on.

A beautiful, significant film and story. I was brought to tears at several points while watching.

Christian love imbues the entire life of the redeemed primary character...and I learned anew how a changed heart can carry on even in the midst of societal degeneration. We may be called upon to be modern day Jean Valjeans.

My Brother said the movie looks good, but all that singing stinks.

He said the same thing about "West side story".

Read the book...it puts the movie(s) to shame.

I saw the play years ago. The title says it all. I was. But then I hate musicals that are all singing all the time.

E! Online - wrong. The French Revolution occurred 1789-1799, whereas the narrative of Les Misérables begins in 1815. It does, however, feature a revolt by students, known as the June Rebellion or the Paris Uprising of 1832.

Yeah, the French Revolution started as mob violence and then descended into chaos of who was the most righteous. The losers got their heads chopped off. And it didn't even end when Napoleon took over, because he proceeded to lead hundred of thousands of more people to their deaths in his quest for world domination.

Ann is right, there is no comparison...

the French Revolution was carried out by a bunch of socialist murderers who persecuted and murdered Catholics. It was not one of France’s finer moments.

“Someone should make an honest movie about the Reign of Terror”

Or you can just wait for a few more years and see it in real life. I just got back from the movie and liked it. But it was a bit depressing and too “real life” for me. SPOILER ALERT:
.
.
.
Like when the mother of Cosette (sp?) lost her job and in a matter of moments does away with a minor sense of “self” (her hair) for money to feed her child. Then a tooth. Then her soul (prostitution). How fast one can go from “gold to a bowl of dust”.

And then the futility of the youth rebellion. I imagined FREEPERS at the barricades, and when dawn came they were all alone. (Headline: “Right wing gun hoarders hold neighborhood hostage.”)

I pray that it will never come to that. But it showed me that the change must happen BEFORE it all comes crashing down.

well, if they hadn't fought on our side against the English in the War of independence, things may have turned out differently

Also, the French defeated 7 coalitions against them from 1798 to 1812, finally being defeated really by Napoleon's ill-conceived plan and the Russian weather which killed a million men

Also, the French were instrumental in the GReek war of independence in 1821, in the restoration of King Ferdinand VII of Spain in the 1800s

They were also fighting alongside us in the Korean War and the first gulf war

And they kept their colonies-in-name in West Africa
