'Gerry Anderson, creator of the Thunderbirds and Joe 90 puppet superhero TV shows, has died at the age of 83, his son has announced.

Anderson had been suffering from Alzheimer's Disease since early 2010, and his condition had worsened in the past six months, Jamie Anderson said.

Gerry Anderson also created Stingray and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. Thunderbirds was filmed on Slough Trading Estate in Berkshire and was first broadcast in 1965.

Jamie Anderson announced the news on his website, saying his father had died peacefully in his sleep at noon on Wednesday.

His other creations included UFO, Space: 1999, Supercar and Fireball XL5.'

Damn. I watched and greatly enjoyed most of those shows.
Rest well Mr Anderson, you’ve earned it far more than most.

In addition to Star Trek, UFO, and Space:1999 were boyhood sci-fi staples.

We also wouldn't have Team America: World Police if it weren't for Anderson.

Loved his shows when I was a kid back in the 1970s, especially Space 1999.

How many of you sixties kids remember this Gerry Anderson Fireball XL5 theme song? My brothers and I would sing it incessantly. (Shenanigans was also a killer show!)

UFO was truly extraordinary for several reasons.

First and foremost was fashion, and it is a good question whether it was heavily influenced from Star Trek, but with the keen fashion sense the British had at the time. Produced in 1970-71, but supposedly taking place in 1980, men wore “Beatle boots”, had Star Trek pointed sideburns, wore synthetic Nehru jackets, etc. The women’s fashions were amazing, but not as glamorous as “Star Trek guest star” outfits.

The car the lead character drove was a Ford Zephyr-Zodiac Mk IV, but modified to look like a DeLorean, before there were DeLoreans.

The plot-lines were pretty brutal at times, and as the lead character observed in one episode: “They may be years ahead of the human race, but we’ve got one thing they haven’t: bloody-mindedness. It built this planet.”

Gerry Anderson's "Thunderbirds" was one of my favorite shows as a kid. And before that, his "Supercar" (with Mike Mercury).

I liked UFO. Used to sit in a grubby ol’ LaZboy in the basement and watch it. Gave me some real chills... I wish the UFO movie project had succeeded.
I still wonder where my Moonbase and its Interceptors are.

Peter Cook and Dudley Moore did a great spoof of the Super-Marionation shows on their series “Not Only But Also.” It’s available on DVD, although unfortunately not all of that series has survived.
