German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble warned Britain in a Sunday newspaper interview against “blackmailing” its EU partners in a bid to bring powers back home from Brussels.

“We want to keep Britain in the EU and not force it out,” Schäuble told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. “But I will also say that does not mean anyone can blackmail us.”

Asked whether a debate raging in Britain about a possible referendum on the country’s future in the 27-member bloc was “dangerous”, Schäuble said the European Union needed to be sending a clear message to the rest of the world. …

How would taking power back from an empire that bans habeas corpus among other micromanaging/anti-freedom aspects be blackmail, I would like to know?

The EU is a nasty anti freedom entity. England is even worse. Realistically habeus corpus does not exist there either. All the cops have to do is tell the judge that they are still investigating every 72 hours or so.
Not to mention Englands universal surveillance, the fact that it’s a crime to own a TV there without paying a special tax, (complete with vans that patrol to find violators) speech crimes, thought crimes, political opposition criminalized, a absolute gun ban not seen in the EU, sharia law enforced, etc,,

No, please don’t believe that England is any better than the EU when it comes to freedom.

The status quo of the UK is almost entirely because of the liberal politicians that go along with every single EU directive. These are the same politicians that forced Maggie Thatcher out of office.

British law still has the Habeas Corpus Act of 1679 on the books. Going along with the EU directive nullified that law (due to the treaties declaring European law to be supreme over member states’ laws), and the conservatives (the real ones) are trying to get that power back and nullify the tyranny of the central government.

The real sticking point has nothing to do with freedom or rights as both the EU and Britain equally abuse both. But, the EU wants to tax financial transactions run through the London Exchanges .... that’s what the argument is all about .... the EU wants to steal Britain’s golden goose.

Gun ownership is much freer in France and Germany. The British Olympic team has to leave the country to practice. And the UK had to give a “special dispensation” (the mark of tryanny) to be able to host the London Olympics.

And Britains gun grab was purely a British thing that happened in the mid 90s when the EU was nothing. They did it in response to two or three mass shootings. It is akin to the Aussia ban. BUt it wasnt in response to the EU. Otherwise how to explain much more liberal German and French gun laws. (liberal by european standards)

And their idea of Habeas Corpus is not anything an American would recognize. They can arrest you for “suspicion”. Meaning, the think you are up to something, arent sure what, and want to dig ito who and what you are.
I saw this happen to a man wearing camo, at night, in a public park. They arrested him, and could hold him as long as they were still checking him out. The onoly requirement was at the 72 hr mark a judge had to sign off on it. And that was a meaningless routine proceedure in which the prisoner never even appeared.

England is a tyranny, about 1% worse than the EU by almost every measure. And the EU is almost as bad. There are no good guys across the atlantic and true freedom is unknown if that means people controlling their nation. And these days, British conservatives are basically irrelevant politically.

Gun bans in Britain were the left’s response to IRA terrorism. As is the original distortion of habeas corpus. (The left, who tacitly supported the IRA, also does not like to point out how they and Israel share living under the same menace; but the IRA always said they and the PLO shared “one struggle”.)
