How 'Cliff' Talks Hit the Wall
WSJ ^ | December 21, 2012 | PATRICK O'CONNOR and PETER NICHOLAS

Posted on 12/22/2012 8:56:08 AM PST by yoe

Congressional leaders and President Barack Obama called Friday for a return to negotiations to avert the so-called fiscal cliff, a day after talks cratered in a very public fashion when Republicans abandoned House Speaker John Boehner's backup plan.

In truth, talks to secure a big deficit-reduction deal had already broken down Monday afternoon in the office of Mr. Boehner (R., Ohio)......

[snip]A review of the negotiations, based on interviews with a dozen aides and lawmakers, suggests the problems lay in Mr. Boehner's inability to coax his rank-and-file to support a deal that raises taxes on higher-income Americans. Another factor was what Republicans saw as President Obama's unwillingness to bend when a deal was in sight, jamming the speaker with a deal his party couldn't swallow.

[snip] At one point, according to notes taken by a participant, Mr. Boehner told the president, "I put $800 billion [in tax revenue] on the table. What do I get for that?"

"You get nothing," the president said. "I get that for free."

RE :”Where do you see the “end going”?”

Its always risky looking too far out, but it looks very bad right now.
You are not going to like it. This is why O will make sure we go off the cliff, which is an easy job for him because so many on R side are working to make sure they get blamed.

1) No one tries for Bohners job Speaker because they don't want to be in that seat leading to the 2014 midterms, they leave him as the 'blame goat'.
2) taxes go up, unemployment comp runs out, FICA... stock market tanks ,....all hell breaks loose.
3) GOP in house who is/are already getting the blame has the heat turned up on them at home by angry voters
4) Bohner EVENTUALLY takes Os terms of surrender to his House, he gets just enough R votes to pass it with Pelosi Dems, the others take the ‘principled’ stand. He claim she got something in return, a fig leaf.
5) Republicans lose House to Pelosi next midterm in 2 years, Reid picks up more seats, Democrats own DC again in 2015,
6) Obama completes his mission in his last two years, America is never the same.
But maybe todays voters get mad at Dems in four years after #6, but by then millions of new dreamers can vote Dem after immigration reform,

But it wasnt all a waste, this house passed 33 symbolic repeals of O-care. That made a difference,, right?

Fools!

The Republican house members are not as easily moved as the MOTY selection committee at Time Magazine or the Nobel Peace Prize Committee.

Llast year 2011 this GOP house took on three MAJOR confrontations with O and they got beat up on all of them, a fourth could be the election.
But unlike this one before hand most freepers were claiming that they would be wins because the voters would fall behind them. This one is different than that.

Most comments I read on this standoff the posters say they think that Republicans will be blamed for anything that goes wrong in this fight, and by coincidence, that is what Rush is telling them too, but its still full steam ahead,

I read lots of beer bravery :”I don’t care if Republicans get blamed and lose the election, its principle” lately. SO I made up a list of Os and Pelosis to-do list after taking full control of the congress in 2015:

Repeal DOMA (gays get federal marriage benefits)

Immigration reform (give poor illegal’s the vote(for Dem), and free Obama-care, and tax credits)

Gun Safety laws (your gun can hold the max five bullets and it costs $500 in taxes to register)

Obama care fixes (raise the uninsured fine and make it more progressive)

Retirement savings reform( remove tax deferment for 401Ks except if it invests in government bonds)

Reproductive freedom (Obama-care expanded to all (free) abortions for any reason)

Climate Change (Cap and Trade taxes)

Your predictions will come true if the GOP chooses yet again to throw conservatives under the bus and blame them for everything. Conservativism wins when genuine conservatives are not sandbagged by the GOP establishment. If we don’t want Pelosi to do these thing GOP must not compomise one inch with President Obama. The American people will support conservatives when they see REAL conservatives in Congress, not Scott Brown RINOs.

Well the polls all show most Americans blame Republicans and agree with Obama, but I guess we can say that those polls are all rigged just like the ones saying Romney would win.

But the proof in the pudding is that NO Republican in the House will challenge O to be speaker because they all know that is a losing job, be Os bitch for two years then be replaced by Pelosi in 2015.

If there was a single Republican in the House who believes what you say he would run for Speaker. But no its much easier to hide from that like a fwightened wabbit then make those symbolic NO votes while O gets everything he wants.

The 33 symbolic O-care repeal votes this house session were meaningless. What a huge waste of a God given opportunity. Rs are the loser party.

Look, Scott Brown made a lot of brave votes for Republicans given the MA voters who voted him in. This bashing of him is BS. He was beat by a marxist.

You really think a Jim DeMint would win MA where Warren won? Hell, he got the hell out of the Senate knowing what is coming.

You really think a 15 state strategy will work?
If conservatives really believe in something they must make it popular in states like MA so Brown can beat a Liz Warren. Not lose and whine and self destruct.

As difficult as it is for conservatives to believe we have passed the tipping point in large part due to massive LEGAL, third world immigration. Over 40 million poor, unskilled people have flooded the country since the 1965 Immigration Act. We are now a “center left” country.

That was on my list of where the R party is going handing the house to Pelosi in 2015 out of spite and then they pass immigration reform:

Repeal DOMA (gays get federal marriage benefits)

Immigration reform (give poor illegal’s the vote(for Dem), and free Obama-care, and tax credits)

Gun Safety laws (your gun can hold the max five bullets and it costs $500 in taxes to register)

Has Obama yet issued an executive order allowing same-sex “couples” to file joint income tax returns? I don’t think he has, for that will cost the treasury tens of billions right there. Will such couples have to prove they are “wed”, or need they have some kind of ceremony?

Repealing DOMA is on the list of the items Obama will get done in 2015 when Pelosi takes back the house and Reid gets back his ~ 60, to finish transforming America.

Repeal DOMA (gays get federal marriage benefits)

Immigration reform (give poor illegal’s the vote(for Dem), and free Obama-care, and tax credits)

Gun Safety laws (your gun can hold the max five bullets and it costs $500 in taxes to register)

'Cliff' Talks Hit the Wall

Would be be nice if there was a wall in front of the cliff. Obama obviously isn't threatened by America's financial collapse since I think it was part of the plan all along - the coup d'état of America. He doesn't like America. He showed us that way before he became POTUS. Apparently that doesn't matter to the majority of voters. It also doesn't matter to the opposing party enough to have mounted a half-way sensible campaign which would easily have defeated Obama.
