Mentally Ill Kids Don't Just Come from Nowhere

The recent post "I am Adam Lanza's Mother" by a woman who posts at anarchistsoccermom and animatedly advertises herself wearing an "I love Che" t-shirt is as slick a piece of exploitative propaganda as anything we've seen in the last four years. Soon after the essay went viral mom blogger Liza Long appeared on CNN and the Today show calling for a national conversation on mental illness.

After the Newtown massacre the self-described author, musician, Classicist and single mother of four felt compelled to share her own story. Long's written account of life with an out of control child focuses solely on her son. She's brutally honest when it comes to his behavior but omits any mention of several other contributing factors for his dysfunction: family dynamics, Michael's early years, Dad's behavior before the divorce and afterwards, her own use or non-use of medications and why she would pump him with psychotropic drugs when the inexplicable cause of his violent outbursts confounded everyone...did this also include family counseling, spiritual guidance, an in-depth clinical look at Mom and Dad's behavior, or traumatic events passed from one generation to the next? If Ms. Long indeed fessed up to some family secrets why doesn't she address that in her poignant, gut wrenching depiction of Michael?

Is access to treatment the problem? During a December 19 press conference the President stated as much when he said, "We're going to need to work on making access to mental health care at least as easy as access to a gun." Media accounts of Klebold's, Harris', Hui Cho's, and Holmes' and Lanza's parents suggested they had more than enough financial resources to seek out the best treatment for their sons.

When your father walks out on you and leaves you at the mercy of the woman he doesn’t have the guts to live with, you’re going to be a really angry kid.

It isthe last taboo. Adopting kids from other cultures is oft times not successful. My friend’s husband ended up writing a book about it.

The divorce was all her idea. He was blindsided by her request, and did not want it. According to his attorney, Peter was distraught over it. He gave her MORE in support than required by law, just to be sure they were well taken care of, $240,000 per year. She also stipulated in the divorce that she was to have sole responsibility for making decisions (health, etc) for Adam. He had no say.

Perhaps Adam was angry at his mom for pushing his father out of his life.

Peter Lanza’s new wife is a librarian, but has nothing to do with GE. She works at a university.

You’re right. They are taking their hope away from them. Everything is dangerous and bad. The folks you should love are greedy and destructive. The most basic of foods will kill you, etc. They promote neurosis with disaster talk and telling kids how bad their diets are even if they aren’t really. It’s craziness. The other day I listened to a conversation on disaster preparedness which sounded more like apocalypse preparedness. Enough to make anyone fret and lose their mind.

Your information definitely paints a different picture. I have looked on the web for that information about Peter Lanza and have run through the same repetitive story; much of which is cut and pasted from each other.

Which came first chemical imbalance or unbalanced thought processes? I would guess either or, as one would lead to the other and vice versa. The way one thinks affects the physical as much as the physical affects the way one thinks. And out of all this comes behavior. Then there are the outside factors and all together this creates either mental health or mental illness.

“I think the schools are creating a lot of them by teaching subjective reality. From kindergarten a good many are being taught that the earth is dying and its all the fault of their parents. They’re being taught that grandma is greedily using up all the resources. Homosexuality is normal and heterosexuality is an oppressive imposed lifestyle. This kind of crap continues all the way into college.

Children who might be mildly neurotic but grow up to be otherwise fine are being put under enormous psychological stress through their formative years.”

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^This. Don’t forget the guilt & shame indoctrinated into those who were born Caucasian &/ or Christian.

The devil made me do it is a poor excuse for someone else’s behavior. silly excuse also...Some people are hard wired to be trouble makes, some are made by abuse with in the family, genetic predisposition to certain behaviors, what they are taught on TV and some video games if you watch the faces on the kids when they really get into the game, but the devil made me do is the weakest one of all. No father in the home when the boys start getting testerrome. Females think its easy to raise teenage boys but some of those boys need a good male role model. Not rap music scum..

The feds forced the state years back to institutionalize mentally ill children in the school system. From kindergarten thru high school these kids are put in a normal environment that isolates them even more until they reach the breaking point. My neice is a school psych she has an array of children who are suicidal, cutters, violent, and uncontrollable under medication and in the classroom with children who do not understand thier strange ways and actions and act accordingly. This creates a pressure cooker effect. My friend has a child who is now a young adult who said thier is no where he can turn and is left with the school system as a treatment center until it is no longer an option because of the childs deteriorating condition. Lazar is proof that it does not work, no one is talkng about it because for the politician it doesnt fit thier agenda and for the parents they are still on the emotional rollercoaster. I hope they wake up

Well said Strategerist. I agree completely with everything you said.

There are many causes of serious mental illness. Some are the result of traumatic early life experiences such as sexual and or physical abuse or severe neglect early in childhood (detachment disorders). But that does not explain all mental illnesses. There are also biochemical causes; some genetically based and hereditary like schizophrenia and bi-polar disorders and there are causes that can be attributed to the mother’s exposure to viruses or toxic chemicals while pregnant. Traumatic brain injuries or undiagnosed brain tumors also sometimes play a role. The brain is a very complex organ. And there are documented cases of people diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia who came from loving, stable, intact and even among devout Christian families.

For much of this century, psychiatry and psychology overwhelmingly focused on nurture. Parents were blamed for schizophrenic children.

And for many years mothers were blamed if their child was autistic, the prevailing theory at the time was that the mothers of autistic children caused their child’s autism by not being “loving enough” or “too detached” during their child’s infancy until studies found that autism occurs in families with multiple children where only one of those children was autistic and the mother treated that child no differently from all her other children. Autism may also have a genetic component and BTW – it’s not caused by vaccines. And it should also be noted that Adam Lanza has an older brother who is not mentally ill.

Simplistically and irrationally jumping to the conclusion that the mother is entirely to blame absence all the facts or that it’s the result of demonic forces (or video games, or TV, or movies, or on guns, or the “gun culture”, or on divorce, or on medications, or the lack of medication, on vaccines, on ….fill in the blank) is no different than simplistically blaming juvenile type I diabetes or cancer on the mother or on Coca Cola or on the Devil. The answer is not to be found in more gun control or in banning video games, outlawing divorce, prayer in public schools or in Exorcism.

And as far as blaming the mother for not institutionalizing Adam in a psychiatric hospital, I posted this on a related thread:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2969335/posts?page=95#95

Add to that that there is great society pressure on parents not to institutionalize their children, even if they could or even should. What do you imagine most people would say to the parents of a young child who chose to permanently send their child away to an institution? Sadly quite a few would say “You sent your child away to an institution because you just didn’t want to be bothered; you were too uncaring, too selfish to care for them”.

We simply do not have many good ways of treating and dealing with the seriously mentally ill, those who exhibit violent tendencies or those are not dangerous to anyone but themselves and we do not support their families and enable them to forcibly commit and medicate when it is sometimes the right and responsible thing to do.

The quotation from the article shows only that the author makes claims that are irresponsible and self-serving. The author just puts forth something most people would like to believe, but it is unsupported by any scientific research.

The pain condition alone doesn’t make someone evil or mental, tho. A few weeks ago there was an article on FR about a girl with that condition and she seemed overall like a nice, happy person who just had to be a bit more careful in her daily life.

That’s where you are very wrong - where do you think those “voices in their head” come from?

Inherited gene or not, no-one can prove that a mental disorder itself is the CAUSE of someone killing someone else. As I clearly stated, such physiological issues can certainly create a person/mind that is more susceptible to said influence.

There are parallels in drug use - as well as in mystic/Eastern spirituality/religions - induced, trance-like states then contact with “others” that are so similar to what paranoid schizophrenics sometimes describe.

Open doors can be the result of chemicals, physiological issues, or simply dabbling with certain activities that are open doors. The flat denial of of a supernatural component is naive and dangerous. This is a big part of why we are seeing the outright evil played out in such a vivid way.
