Mass. lawmaker will plead guilty to voter fraud

A Democratic state representative from Everett who served on an election law committee is resigning his seat and will plead guilty to voter fraud charges in federal court in Boston, authorities said Thursday.

Representative Stephen “Stat” Smith, 57, faces up to two years in prison, and prosecutors will recommend a 6-month sentence, according to his plea agreement. Smith has also agreed to vacate his seat, effective Jan. 1, and not seek elective office for five years from the date of his sentencing. A plea date has not been set.

Smith did not return messages seeking comment Thursday.

One of his lawyers, Peter C. Horstmann, declined to discuss the case, but said in an e-mail, “Please remember, these are misdemeanors.”

According to prosecutors, Smith, first elected to the Legislature in 2006, submitted fraudulent absentee ballots to support his bids for public office in 2009 and 2010.

He has also served on the Everett Board of Alderman and School Committee.

Smith obtained absentee ballots for ineligible voters, who would unlawfully cast them, or he cast himself, prosecutors said. In some cases, he obtained absentee ballots for registered voters who did not know that he was voting in their names.

Prosecutors wrote in a filing that in those cases, “one or more government officials” helped Smith intercept absentee ballots before they reached unknowing voters.

Still used the word ‘Democratic’ incorrectly, but at least the party affiliation was made known right up front.

Progress.

He should not be imprisoned. He should be hanged. As should all who tamper with the vote.

Saw that picture and had one instant thought: eerily likeness to actor David Bamber, who played the clergyman 'Mr. Collins' for the BBC's presentation of "Pride and Prejudice."

, ‘and not seek elective office for five years from the date of his sentencing. A plea date has not been set’
Gosh so since it’s Mass and he’s a dem he only has an 80% chance of regaining his job.
I didn’t see anything in there about losing his pension.

6 months in jail??? Even 2 years in jail for a LAWMAKER convicted of vote fraud!??!! What is that, some sort of effing joke??? Vote fraud has and continues to destroy the very foundation of this country; it nullifies the part of the constitution that states: govern by the consent of the governed. The sentence should match the destructive severity of the crime; vote fraud conviction deserves nothing less than life in prison, no parole. This DA needs to garner some balls and make an example of this LAW BREAKER. Kill somebody in the first degree, go to prison for life or be put to death, unless of course one is connected or a politician. Kill the constitution in the first degree, get 6 months, nothing or commended.

He only faced 2 years so i guess that’s the penalty. I agree with you. This is tantamount to treason. Put him against a wall and offer him a blindfold.
The power and perks that come with a political office make it worth while to cheat if thats the only sentence.
Notice we read nothing about his pension.

Personally, I think the man should be executed. My position is that he, and thousands, hundreds of thousands like him STOLE this election and have subjected freedom loving Americans who have the will and intention to provide for themselves to the tyranny of ideological liberals that want nothing more than revenge and redistribution.

His execution would serve the public interest of freedom loving Americans.

In the People’s Republic a stretch at Club Fed is a resume enhancer. They cite their experience in dealing with federal officials and federal programs, particularly housing.

Conviction of multiple incidents of voter fraud ought to be considered treason. After all, they are trying to overthrow a government buy placing someone in a seat of power that might not legally win an election.

"Misdemeanors"?

That is the problem, any vote fraud should be a major felony.
