Mondale pushes filibuster reform

“This is basically not very interesting stuff,” former Vice President Walter Mondale said of filibuster reform during a talk Tuesday at theUniversityofMinnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

But it’s a huge issue, Mondale said, because use of the stalling tactic in the Senate is paralyzing the country from addressing everything from the debt crisis and national security to judicial and cabinet appointments.

In recent years, the Senate Republican minority has employed filibusters — once rarely used — to stall or kill a long list Democratic bills and presidential appointments. As a result, Mondale said, almost nothing is getting done. “It’s a deep crisis,” he said.

When Mondale was in the Senate (1964-76), he led a successful move to make it easier to end filibusters — called cloture — by dropping the number of votes required from 67 (a two-thirds majority) to 60. But that no longer works as intended.

According to the media and Dems, it was the “Nuclear Option” when the GOP considered doing this. With them Dems in charge, it is “filibuster reform.”

There are a TON of things slated to be taken up by the Senate, which excludes the house, which are quite scary... and probably a good part of the reason that the ‘Rats want to undo the filibuster. Things like the LOST treaty, ARMS treaty, KYOTO or KYOTO-like/crap-n-trade, amnesty, etc. And, mark my words, just prior to any switch back to republican control, they’ll re-instate the filibuster if not strengthen it!

They must be terribly arrogant to assume they will never again be in the minority.

The Senate was set up with filibusters because slowness is a virtue in government.

At some point, the Republicans will be back in the majority, then the Dems will scream and holler about the new rule being unfair to the minority party.

What goes around comes around.......

Seriously, I thought the man was already dead ~ he looks dead ~ sounds dead ~ has no feelings.

I'd say at the least he is politically inviable ~ the very sort of individual Belgium is lining up for involuntary euthenasia!

The author seems to have a lapse of memory when he left out the common use of the filibuster in recent years by the democrat minority.

Are the rats that crazy? Do they think that they will remain in power in the Senate forever?

Is he still alive? I would have thought he’d bore himself to death by now.
