Off-duty deputy praised for taking down gunman at Mayan 14 theater

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is calling one of their own a hero after deputies say she stopped what could have been a disastrous shooting inside a south-side movie theater lobby.

Jesus Garcia, 19, was at the Santikos Mayan Palace 14 at SW Military and I-35 on Sunday night. According to San Antonio police, he was upset over a recent breakup with his girlfriend.

According to both police and deputies, Garcia called into his girlfriend's work at The China Garden restaurant and said he was going to shoot somebody. The restaurant is located outside the theater.

At 9:30 p.m., Garcia walked in and chased all employees and patrons out of the restaurant before firing at an employee as he or she tried to flee, police said. It was not immediately known if the targeted employee was his girlfriend.

Garcia continued to chase the employee from the restaurant to the parking lot outside the theater, firing his weapon along the way. San Antonio police said Garcia also took aim at an officer who pulled up in a marked cruiser. He missed the officer but shattered the officer's windshield.

The chase went into the lobby of the Mayan 14 Theater, where off-duty Sheriff's Sgt. Lisa Castellano immediately sprang into action.

The 13-year veteran quickly moved all patrons out of the lobby and into a secure location, deputies said. She then chased Garcia into the men's restroom, where she and another off-duty police officer cornered the suspect. Castellano then shot the suspect.

“The actions she took prevented a lot more people from getting hurt or even worse, killed.” said Deputy Chief Manuel Longoria of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

Garcia was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he underwent surgery on Monday. He was listed in critical condition.

He faces charges of capital murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Investigators said there could be more charges once officers finish looking into all the details of what happened.

I didn’t get it either. In this incident, no one appeared to be murdered. Perhaps he had a previous murder.

I sent the reporter an email and this is what he responded with:

*Attempted * Capital Murder is what he is charged with.

Where is that not mentioned so we can amend it?

I sent him the link to his own story so it will probably be corrected soon.

“...take bets on which way the DORK would have run if confronted with something like this.”

I bet... down both legs for $100

I'm guessing the theater is gun free, which is why armed security guards are needed in the first place.

The "logic" in the statement above boggles the mind if you think about it. This is exactly the insanity we're faced with. Gun free zones require armed guards to keep them gun free.

Please note I am agreeing with your point. It's almost like the old Viet Nam era statement "We had to destroy the village in order to save it".

Of course it’s not plastered all over the news, the would-be mass murderer was stopped. That doesn’t fit into Commie plans. This story must be buried so no one thinks it’s possible for a mass murderer to be stopped.

The Sgt was hailed as a hero. Liberals don’t want anyone to be hailed as a hero, or a savior, for that matter, of anyone.

To them only GOVERNMENT saves, only government can be the hero.

All fits in with their theme of no one rising to any level of individual achievement, or accomplishment. We’d rather have mass murder of innocent people before we’d have ANY talk of anyone saving them or preventing unnecessary loss of life.

So freaking tired of it.

Hmmm...

Against the law to brandish
Against the law to fire your weapon in a theater
Against the law to fire your weapon in a public setting
Against the law to attempt to shoot someone when your life isn’t in danger
Against the law to kill someone
Against the law to fire at a police officer
Against the law to resist arrest

You know folks, what you could do to fix this, is make more laws.

I’m sure we just haven’t made enough laws to stop this.

The right law would have stopped this guy. We just have to find it. /s

Don’t laugh. This is the Left’s argument. They aren’t laughing.

That’s foam, not your regular saliva.
