EXCLUSIVE: Fear of being committed may have caused Connecticut gunman to snap

“From what I've been told, Adam was aware of her petitioning the court for conservatorship and (her) plans to have him committed," Flashman told FoxNews.com. "Adam was apparently very upset about this. He thought she just wanted to send him away. From what I understand, he was really, really angry. I think this could have been it, what set him off.”

A senior law enforcement official involved in the investigation confirmed that Lanza's anger at his mother over plans for “his future mental health treatment” is being looked at as a possible motive for the deadly shooting.

Flashman was told Nancy Lanza had begun filing paperwork to get conservatorship over her troubled son, but that could not be confirmed because a court official told FoxNews.com such records are sealed. The move would have been necessary for her to gain the legal right to commit an adult to a hospital or psychiatric facility against his will. A competency hearing had not yet been held.

Adam Lanza attended the Sandy Hook School as a boy, according to Flashman, who said Nancy Lanza had volunteered there for several years. Two law enforcement sources said they believed Nancy Lanza had been volunteering with kindergartners at the school. Most of Lanza's victims were first graders sources believe Nancy Lanza may have worked with last year.

Flashman said Nancy Lanza was also good friends with the school’s principal and psychologist—both of whom were killed in the shooting rampage.

But in one news report the school said that his mother didn’t teach there.

“Who is Flashman?”

If you read the article, you wouldn’t have to ask.

Several days ago they found out from multiple sources that they knew what the movie was. Then they refused to release it.

This is entirely plausible. Trying to get conservatorship was going to be a huge uphill climb.

I’m going to keep my mouth shut about how I think Adam Lanza missed his mark.

Of course.

Heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who heard it from another you’ve been messing around.

According to reports, Lanza’s mother was a “a gun enthusiast who owned at least five weapons”

I've seen this stated a number of times. Other than owning guns, I wonder if there is any evidence the mother actually was a gun enthusiast. I suspect she was just a hyper-indulgent mother and bought them at the behest of her son.

That “uncle” is a fraud and has been discredited, AFAIK.

Apparently the jo-mama nixed that as part of the court divorce proceedings.

With all of his resources he allowed it, apparently it doesn't say much for him, does it?

When you have guns you have a responsibility to keep them out of the hands of psychos.

That is true but at this point, we don't know if she had a safe, or what kind of safe it might have been. Even having a safe when an unstable person is living in the house present should not be considered secure storage.

A 3-digit combination lock where each digit can be 0-50 has 51*51*51 = 132,651 possible combinations. Using a brute force cracking approach, assume 5 seconds to dial a given 3-digit combination. Worst case will require 184.24 hours to figure out the combination.

At 4 hours per day, he'll have the combination in less than 2 months.

Basically, if you have an unstable person in your home who by virtue of his obsession with video games can focus for extended periods on a task, you cannot trust a safe with a random 3-digit code where each digit can be between 0-50.

How about if you change the combo every week?

When you have guns you have a responsibility to keep them out of the hands of psychos.

Lame excuses do not absolve one of this responsibility.

> It would explain why he murdered his mother.
> How would that explain why he murdered innocent children?

Maybe killing them was his way of “saving” them from the kind of (mental) life he had been going through. There are a lot of people who want to “save” others but end up doing more harm than good to themselves and others.

I too have posted there was an argument of some kind over something he wanted or did not want. I am still not sold on the fact that he had much of a mental problem.

More like a manipulative, lazy brat, who knew how to play his mother. 20 years old still living at home, mom had to find someway to get that kid out of the house, he wasn't going to make it easy for her.

Seems FOX is once again getting their NEWS analysis from FR. rofl.

may have caused Connecticut gunman to snap

Except that he didn't just "snap." The whole thing was planned out and executed in exquisite detail.

WTH is wrong with people these days? Back when I was his age we had bigger worries, like the draft. When I was 20 I had already been through boot camp and off to my first duty station. Poker, chess and monopoly were the only games I played unless I could find a pinball machine in a hamburger joint. Guns....everywhere.

How about if you change the combo every week?

Fine but there's always the possibility he hits the lotto on the first attempt. But you hadn't even considered the effort to brute force a 3-digit 0-50 combo lock until I pointed it out did you?

Lame excuses do not absolve one of this responsibility.

If you weren't so obsessed with insulting anyone whose comments either do not mirror your own position, or satisfy your ego you would recognize that having guns in a safe will only slow down a person determined to get them.

This makes sense.

Next question: Why was his "treatment" such a complete failure?

I have to presume this kid was medicated from the time he entered elementary school....
