Following the tragic shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. by Adam Lanza , many Americans are wondering what exactly our Founding Fathers intended when they set the Second Amendment to paper more than 200 years ago. Surely not the killing of 20 young children and six women.

He's absolutely right. No one would even think about seceding from the Union today either.
The second amendment was written so as to allow an armed population the ability to overthrow a government gone rogue..
with that in mind, any and every weapon our military possesses, we as citizens have not only the right, but the duty to possess...
this includes so called assault rifles, machine guns, grenades, mortar and cannon, tanks, armored personnel carriers, aircraft and even warships ( provided you can afford it )..
keep in mind that during the time of the revolution, our fledgling government LEASED warships and cannon from PRIVATE owners..
So, we had far greater freedoms under the king than we do now...
think about it....

The author should be reminded that God does not help people who refused to help themselves.
You can no more disarm the world than you can change the nature of the human race. You either are prepared to deal with that world as is(as the teachers of this school were not) or you and those depended upon you(such as the children) will fall victim to what ever calamity your unprepared for.
That is the hard truth, and those who wish to ignore that true do so at great peril, not always there own as in the case of theses children.

It's a shame that the Bill of Rights did not contain an explicit right to self defense. I'm guessing the founders could not imagine otherwise; believing it to be obvious.

I agree with you. If I had a crazy kid, as in this kind of crazy, the last thing on Earth I’d be doing is teaching him (or her) how to use a firearm.
I had a somewhat crazy friend crash on my couch for a few days several years ago, and I made damned sure I hid all the guns and locked them up. No easy feat....she showed up on my doorstep one evening! I told her she stank, and needed a shower, so when she was in the shower, I used that opportunity.

And the 4th was never meant only to protect politicians from unreasonable search and siezure. Why do I mention this ?
Because the 1st, 2nd and 4th amendments are THE ONLY amendments to use the phrase "THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE".

Of course, in Madison’s time the family unit was still cohesive and functional enough that family members would not have allowed access to their guns to a member of that family who was struggling psychologically or emotionally.
