Fiscal Cliff 'Breakthrough' — Boehner Offers To Include Debt Ceiling Hike Along With Higher Taxes
Business Insider ^ | 12/16/2012 | Joe Weisenthal

Things are getting interesting on the Fiscal Cliff front. Last night it was reported by multiple outlets that John Boehner agreed to let taxes rise on those making $1 million more per year. That was seen by the White House as a too-narrow concession, but it was something, as it meant that the real negotiation was beginning, as the two sides have begun to trade taxes and spending cuts. Now there's more signs of real movement.

The Washington Post's Lori Montgomery and Paul Kane report that John Boehner has now offered to include a one-year debt ceiling hike in his offer, taking away a key point of Republican leverage coming up in just a couple of months.

From WaPo:

_______________

The White House rejected the offer, saying it would raise too little cash to significantly dent record budget deficits and do nothing to extend emergency unemployments benefits into the new year, according to a Democrat familiar with the talks.

But the tax offer was viewed as a breakthrough, the Democrat said. Senior White House officials remained in contact with Boehner’s staff throughout the weekend in a sign that serious negotiations had finally begun after weeks of stalemate and partisan posturing.

Clearly with the clock ticking down, Boehner is actually putting things on the table that represent concessions. Next is for The White House to counter with something new.

I’m rolling on the floor laughing my arse off. I’m sure there will be a complete and total gun and ammunition ban thrown in for good measure just to make sure they won’t ever have to account to the people for the hole they’ve dug for us.

Boner will *REALLY* have Ø in a bind if he throws in not having spending cuts as well... Ø might be forced to come to an agreement if that becomes the case

Boehner has offered to raise the top tax rate for earners making more than $1 million, a source told the Associated Press.

The development in the fiscal talks comes amid pessimism the Speaker and President Obama can hammer out a deal before Christmas.

Boehner’s offer would not include extending federal unemployment benefits, and it is unclear how it would address sequestration — the tens of billions in spending cuts scheduled to go into effect for the Pentagon and other federal agencies starting Jan. 2.

And Republicans remain unyielding on agreeing to raise the U.S. debt limit as part of any agreement to avoid the fiscal cliff.

The source said Obama has not accepted the offer, according to the Associated Press, which added that Boehner is still seeking more spending cuts than Obama has proposed.

Bottom line… no deal. The clock is running out, assuming it’s not already too late. Even if they came to some sort of deal – even a short term, stop gap measure – the two men would still have to sell the plan to their respective parties, somebody would have to draw up the matching bills, and then herd enough cats into the chambers to actually vote for it. Tomorrow morning will come with only two weeks left to accomplish all of that, and the two sides still don’t even have the basic framework of a deal… just an offer which was immediately turned down by the President.

The caving is, always, one way only! Where’s ALL of the caving on the Democratic Party side?

The Republican starting point in negotiations is unconditional surrender. Obama will demand more and Boehner will give it.

I can only hope this is a ploy to get the media to report that Republicans were willing to Offer up nearly everything and got shot down by Obama on every count so that they can defend themselves as being at fault over the fiscal cliff failure.

NOTE: The White House has no intention of negotiating with Bohener.....

Boehner ain’t got the backbone for this fight.

They must have records of Boehner in some extremely interesting situations, or this wouldn’t be happening.

Just shows how important the Christmas parties are to Boehner. He will give away the whole nation to avoid missing his elite parties.

Why didn’t he offer that a month ago? Is he so stupid he thinks we give him “credit for trying”?

I think Obama would be perfectly happy to go off the cliff. His defecit would be cut in half, defence spending cuts, and the Republicans gets blamed for taxes going up on everyone. His goal is the get control of the House in two years to be able to implement his final plans in his last two years.

Some really great bargaining there. Did Boehner also offer to come to the White House once a week to lick Obama’s shoes?

Looks like the end of the GOP as a viable political force.
