Boehner offers to take debt limit off the table
Washington Post ^ | 16 Dec 2012 | Lori Montgomery and Paul Kane

House Speaker John A. Boehner has offered to push any fight over the federal debt limit off for a year, a major concession that would deprive Republicans of leverage in the budget battle but is breathing new life into stalled talks over the year-end “fiscal cliff.”

The offer came Friday, according to people in both parties familiar with the talks, as part of the latest effort by Boehner (R-Ohio) to strike a deal with President Obama to replace more than $500 billion in painful deficit-reduction measures set to take effect in January.

With the national debt already bumping up against the $16.4 trillion cap set last year, Congress risks a government default unless it acts to raise the debt ceiling in the next few months.

Many Republicans had argued that party leaders should use the threat of default to demand additional spending cuts from Obama. But Boehner’s offer would head off that potentially nasty fight — at least until the end of next year.

The Republic is lost.

The Republic was lost long before Boehner offered to push the debt limit fight off for another year.

Obama has won twice now. He RAN on raising taxes AND spending gobs of money we don't have. The public approve of him. Worse, the public not only like him, they WANT to continue to like him and give him every benefit of the doubt. The American public is primed to blame Republicans if their taxes go up, and all the GOP feels it can really do now is avoid a catastrophic political defeat. The American people are simply NOT with us.

Yes, we have the House. Some take solace in that. The ugly truth is we held that purely due to gerrymandering. More people voted for a Democratic House candidate than a Republican one - by over a million votes.

We've likely already crossed the tipping point. There are just too many takers and non producers voting themselves more freebies. Our immigrants don't care about this country by and large, and simply vote for the socialist candidates they voted for back home (Mexico mostly).

So no, Boehner isn't the main problem. He's not charismatic and not persuasive, but it is unlikely anyone else could take over and do much better at this particular point in time. The problem is, the public agrees with Obama and the Democrats more than us. There is not a silent majority of traditional Americans out there ready to rise up and save the republic. That time has passed. We are a European social welfare state now, and will likely follow Greece's path down the crapper.

Hey...as long as Boehner’s golf handicap is still in the single digits... everything is fine. Puke.

The House conservatives will not allow this to pass. Boehner could not possibly have the votes. He will lose his Speakership.

Only slightly off-topic -

Any doubt in anyone’s mind on how Boehner will treat any 2nd Amendment bill the Dems lay on his desk?

I have no doubt at all.

I was wrong, i expected Boehner and McConnell to learn from Bush 41 mistakes and not repeat them. Instead, Boehner is caving even more pathetically than Bush 41... and that’s saying something

The silver lining is, there should be a challenge to him as speaker

step one in republican renewal is to get rid of “leaders” who are weak sisters.

I’m wondering WHAT dirt Obama’s minions could possibly have on him. Photographs of him leaving a seedy DC motel with a goat under his arm? He was reelected with 99% of the vote in his gerrymandered district. What could POSSIBLY make him do this?

Wonder which one it is? Heh. Maybe both!
