Boehner offers to take debt limit off the table
Washington Post ^ | 16 Dec 2012 | Lori Montgomery and Paul Kane

House Speaker John A. Boehner has offered to push any fight over the federal debt limit off for a year, a major concession that would deprive Republicans of leverage in the budget battle but is breathing new life into stalled talks over the year-end “fiscal cliff.”

The offer came Friday, according to people in both parties familiar with the talks, as part of the latest effort by Boehner (R-Ohio) to strike a deal with President Obama to replace more than $500 billion in painful deficit-reduction measures set to take effect in January.

With the national debt already bumping up against the $16.4 trillion cap set last year, Congress risks a government default unless it acts to raise the debt ceiling in the next few months.

Many Republicans had argued that party leaders should use the threat of default to demand additional spending cuts from Obama. But Boehner’s offer would head off that potentially nasty fight — at least until the end of next year.

Obama doesn’t want a year he wants the power to raise the limit at his command. Anyone who didn’t think that the debt ceiling was going to be raised above it’s present value is delusional.

This is Washington Post.

I'll wait until Boner announces it before I believe.

When we had a republic, such matters were deliberated in Congressional committees, then the floor of the House and Senate . . .

Now, our Congress is expected to rubber-stamp, to legitimize the diktats of the tyrant Obama.

Don't do it.

You just fought a campaign. You lost two big battles. (Senate and Presidency). Yet you still have an intact army with some of your best young troops itching for a fight. Pity they are commanded by a weepy fellow who instead of retreating to high tactical ground in order deliver a definitive counter stroke, he meekly surrenders without a fight.

“They have surrendered tax cuts AND debt limit.

wow. for what exactly?

No deal would be better”

To me it looks like Boehner is taking away Obama’s excuses for cutting spending. Don't worry, Obama isn't going to agree to this proposal either because it means real spending cuts. That's Obama’s kryptonite

Is Boehner willing to crown Obama king? That seems to be the only thing left to do.

Is this guy completely incompetent? Don’t answer that - I already know the answer.

He is offering to give away his biggest leverage to get nothing in return. Not only that, but he is enabling another couple of trillion in debt. For what???

HE HAS GOT TO GO!!!

How hard is it to just say, "All expenditures begin in the House, here is the deal"

Since no matter what you do, you are damned if you do damned if you don't.... do what is right or get the hell out of the way.

We see it as incompetence, but it is really that he is being blackmailed having some very drity history he doesn’t want outed. The practice is the basis of democrat operations which neuter the republicants.
