The Liberal Democrat Party was poised to return to power in Japan on Sunday, with exit polls projecting a sweeping victory in the general election.

Exit polls from CNN affiliate NHK show that the Liberal Democrat Party, or LDP -- led by former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe -- won the majority of votes in the country's lower house election. The projected results, which indicate the party captured at least 275 of 480 house seats, would give the party another stab at power three years after it was unceremoniously dumped for the Democrat Party of Japan, or DPJ.

The LDP is as right-wing as the mainstream gets. Other than the Neoconservative faction of the party, which has a tendency to say things like Imperial Japanese War Crimes in WWII were “propaganda”.

Due to cultural differences, the LDP is still incredibly statist by American standards.

“The Liberal Democratic Party is as conservative as it gets in Japan.”

Liberal in the traditional sense.

I hate the way progressive statist have highjacked the word liberal. They are not even close to being liberal.

Despite the name it is actually their conservative party (or at least the more conservative party).

Don’t go by the name. the LDP are centrist, but like the DPJ are basically crony-driven party with no real agenda in place except “elect me!”

Also, don’t use the US terms of liberal etc. in context of other countries — the Liberals in Australia tend to be more rightist for instance :)

i don’t think “constitutionalism” really has the same definition in Japan as it does in America, of course. But, the idea that while America goes left, the world moves to the rigth, and vice versa seems to be evident yet again.

The LDP is Japan’s equivalent of the Republican Party.

Haven't those poor people suffered enough?

LOL

The LDP promises more economic stimulus, so more years of suffering are on deck, just like on this side of the Pacific..

Alright, the Liberal Democrats won HUGE! Excellent. See Japan elected an incompetent regime and then corrected the mistake and got rid of them. If only America was so wise.

Yes this is Japan, the bad guys are the democrats and the ‘good guys’ are the Liberal Democrats.

And in Australia the good guys are the Liberals.

And in Spain, the Social Democrats which in every other country that has a party called that are the bad guys.
