Union bosses are fuming at the prospect of a Michigan Right to Work law, but New Yorkers concerned about protecting employee freedom and reviving their state’s flagging economy should consider Michigan’s example.
It’s hard to imagine the Empire State adopting a Right to Work law — but it would be right for businesses, taxpayers and workers.
Big Labor’s top officials huff and puff about Right to Work laws, but they never tell you what they actually do. That’s because nearly 80 percent of Americans support the Right to Work principle when it’s presented to them in straightforward terms.
Right to Work laws don’t ban unions, nor make union organizing illegal. They don’t impinge on anybody’s right to voluntarily join a labor organization. Instead, Right to Work laws ensure that no worker can be forced to join or pay dues to a union to get or keep a job.
This straightforward principle is aimed at protecting workers’ freedom of association. In New York and other states without Right to Work, nonunion employees are routinely forced to financially support unions they have no interest in joining or associating with.
And union officials then use their power to extract dues from nonunion workers to funnel that cash into Big Labor’s political war chest.
A Right to Work law would end this coercive arrangement in New York by ensuring that no worker is forced to pay union dues or fees as a condition of employment. It would also help make union officials more accountable to workers: If voluntary members are the only ones paying dues, union leadership would have to become more responsive to those workers, lest it lose out on potential revenue.

Probably would not happen while NYC is part of New York. People in NYC seem to think freedom is over-hyped.

Theater is a major business in NYC, and the weight and demands of union hiring (more than a dozen for a Broadway show) are a real drag on how many of what type of shows can be mounted. (E.g., smaller casts and orchestras than ideal in many cases.)
Along with being a brake on the development and sharing of art—boosting much playgoing out of the affordable range for many City residents—IMO it is an infringement upon first amendment freedom of speech.
Of course, any producer who tried to go to court over it would be a pariah in the business, but still I’d like to see it pressed by someone.
NY is under control of the darkside. RTW will not happen there.

You may get to Carnegie Hall through practice, but you get to walk away from Carnegie Hall with a half million a year by being a stagehand at the legendary venue.
Bloomberg News blows the lid off the shocking salaries that Carnegie doles out annually, saying that while “a star pianist can receive $20,000 a night... he or she would have to perform at least 27 times to match the income of Dennis O’Connell, who oversees props at the hall.”
Indeed, O’Connell made $530,044 in salary and benefits last year, and the four other members of his full time team (including two carpenters and two electricians) each took home about $430,543. The site points out that the stagehands “benefit from a strong union: Local One of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.” Stagehands at the hall do everything from move equipment to prep work on the three stages to operate audiovisual and sound fixtures, and only the Artistic and Executive Director, Clive Gillinson, makes more — earning a whopping $946,581 per year.

Wishful thinking by the NY Post.
As much of a chance of getting RTW in New York as there is in Massachusetts or Rhode Island. Which is zero.
We would need a few areas of NY to empty out like Detroit before it would ever be possible.
We would need dramatically less ILLEGAL immigration so that families would not support demon-rat candidates for the promised goodies.
We would need a broke-Albany to not have any money to spend on pork.
We would have to wait until ALL the public school teachers, non-profit directors, public sector employees including COPS & FIREMEN and others (with $100K + pensions) who work for tax dollars to retire and move to Florida, North Carolina and Arizona.
When and if all this happens, then there might be enough power left in the electorate to move the pendulum back to sanity and have a shot at RTW. By then we will all be using renmimbis and speaking Hakka, Wu or Jiu. bu yong xie. ming tian jian!
New York is a beautiful place, but the people are a disaster.
