UPDATED: Unions Furious: Michigan to Become Right-to-Work State Today

UPDATE 12:15 pm EST: The Republican controlled legislature has passed the right-to-work legislation 58-51. Michigan Governor Snyder is expected to sign the bill into law later today.

The vote to turn Michigan into a right-to-work state will take place today after days of protests in Lansing about the pro-worker legislation that prevents having to pay dues to a union. Not surprisingly, local police are bracing for possible violence today as more protests are planned.

Even with the outcome considered a foregone conclusion, the heated battle over right-to-work legislation in the traditional union bastion of Michigan shows no sign of cooling.

Authorities in Lansing were bracing for an onslaught of demonstrators Tuesday at the Michigan Capitol as the Legislature reconvenes for what could be final votes on bills. Hundreds of people gathered early Tuesday to get inside.

Yesterday while in Michigan campaigning for his new $1.6 trillion tax increase, President Obama slammed right-to-work states all over the country, saying legislation on the table in Lansing isn't about economics but about attacking unions.

"These so-called right-to-work laws, they don't have anything to do with economics, they have everything to do with politics," Obama told cheering workers Monday during a visit to an engine plant in Redford, Mich. "What they're really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money."

Schools have also been closed so teachers can go protest today because afterall, "it's all about the kids."

At least two Michigan school districts have announced plans to cancel classes Tuesday – the same day some teachers and other union protesters are expected to converge at the state Capitol to protest right-to-work legislation.

Warren Consolidated Schools in southeast Michigan is canceling school “due to the number of staff who has notified us that they will be absent” Tuesday, according to a letter from Superintendent Robert Livernois posted on the district website.

Let's not forget that President Obama refused to comment when his former chief of staff and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel failed to give protesting unionized teachers exactly what they wanted. Apparently his criticism only applies to Republicans.

Before this week, the last time the Chicago Teachers Union went on strike was September 8, 1987. It lasted until October 3, during which officials, teachers and parents clashed in the city's longest teachers strike ever. After it ended, I called the Chicago school system the worst in the country.

President Obama has been noticeably silent. He shouldn't be. The nation deserves to know whether his allegiances lie with his political allies in the public sector unions or with Emanuel and Duncan. This power struggle will reveal much about the constitution of the modern Democratic Party.

If the legislation in Michigan passed and singed into law by Republican Governor Richard Snyder, the Wolverine State will become the 24th in the country to have a right-to-work law on the books.

UPDATE: Much like Wisconsin in 2011, out of state union workers are being bused in to help storm the capitol.

Michigan is getting bombarded by out-of-state union activists, including protestors from Wisconsin. They're expecting union protestors from Ohio and elsewhere, too.

Look for a surge in notes from doctors practicing near the state capitol for union members skipping work on Tuesday.

Today is a great day for conservative America. We must continue to bring the fight to the union thugs as they assault our conservative brothers and sisters like they did today when they ripped down the Americans for Prosperity tent.

Stossel is one of the Fox News commentators who has constantly attacked the unions, even going back to his ABC days.

The unions are liars and thugs, and always have been.
When Capone couldn’t profit off of bootlegging when prohibition was lifted, he shifted his focus to the unions.

They claim they are responsible for the 40 hr work week, but Henry Ford voluntarily implemented the 8 hr days in order to increase productivity and morale.

Unions were also responsible for the Occupy Wall Street fiasco according the Occupy Unmasked movie. The movie shows emails between union reps and the media in their attempt to manufacture the “spontaneous” event.

Democrats should get behind this freedom of choice initiative.

Unions have had their way for far too long. Keep the momentum going.

They are threatened with violence; therefore they HAVE to support them. Criminal behavior rules unions.

The unions are liars and thugs, and always have been.

That is so very true. The early history of unionism in America is intertwined with international Marxism. Evil men such as Eugene V. Debs, Samuel Gompers and "Bill Bill" Haywood set the stage for the current flock of goons such as Richard Trumpka, Andrew Stern and the particularly despicable James Hoffa.

The whole premise of Big Labor is anti-freedom, opposing individual liberty and self-initiative. When unions gain power, entire communities and regions are destroyed. Witness what lies in the wake of what Big Labor has done to my hometown of Pittsburgh. Once the arsenal of the world with a vibrant industrial base, the tri-state region is but a shadow of what it was before the corrupt power of the UMW, USWA and other union rackets brought forth their maniacal devastation.

“Only 7% of Detroit 8th Graders Proficient in Reading...”

Anyone who can read can teach another person to read.

It is not difficult, unless the pupil has a serious mental problem.

I could teach those kids in ten minutes a day. What are there parents doing???????

Change Michigan to blue on your map!

In this case, that's the right kind of blue. Let freedom ring! The modern day slavery of unionism is being crushed by Patriots who love liberty. If, let's say, California becomes Right to Work, can you imagine the reaction of the Big Labor racketeers?

"my hometown of Pittsburgh" Went to W&J in Wash, Pa. during the 1960's. Jones & Laughlin on the Monongahela waterfront was going full bore 24/7.

If I remember correctly that plant was 7 miles from coke ovens to rolling mills along that big old river.Heck of a sight at night.

Can't get used to blue skies over P-Burgh.

Two questions:

1. Are they still making Iron City Beer?

Did they ever find the B-25 that had to pancake in the Mon after running out of gas?

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Is there a list of union companies to boycott? We already don’t by GM or other union car companies. But I want to know which other companies my family no longer needs to do business with. Thanks

“In a sane republic every red state, and some blue states, should be in a state of political mutiny right now. Governors should be holding meetings on fighting tyranny. States should form alliances etc.”

Very interesting that you mentioned states “forming alliances” between them.

Here’s another post in a different thread I put up today:

But this is BIG. This is a state that has been ruined by the unions finally stepping up and telling them NO. But the unions have seized a great deal of political power of late, despite their declining memberships. It will be interesting to see how the empire strikes back.

Lest we forget, the wrongly-sainted "Reverend Doctor" Martin Marxist Luther King, Junior was far from the freedom fighter that the lamestream media glorifies:

“In our glorious fight for civil rights, we must guard against being fooled by false slogans, such as ‘right to work.’ It is a law to rob us of our civil rights and job rights. Its purpose is to destroy labor unions and the freedom of collective bargaining by which unions have improved wages and working conditions of everyone. Wherever these laws have been passed, wages are lower, job opportunities are fewer and there are no civil rights. We do not intend to let them do this to us. We demand this fraud be stopped. Our weapon is our vote.”

— Martin Luther King, speaking about right-to-work laws in 1961.

Of course, among the last things that King did was lead a protest on behalf of union thugs in Memphis back in 1968. MLK, a Republican? Maybe. MLK, a Conservative. NO WAY! Is there any doubt that he'd be beside Michael Moore and other radical leftist goons in a show of "solidarity" today in Michigan?

As a lover of liberty, his holiday is one I have never and will never celebrate.

The movie shows emails between union reps and the media in their attempt to manufacture the “spontaneous” event.

That explains why Obama inexplicably championed the obviously doomed-to-spiral-into-chaos-and-apathy OWS "movement."

In Occupy Unmasked, they discuss how Saul Alinsky got involved in the labor unions as well. They worked side by the side with communists, socialists, and anarchists and dumb college kids during Occupy Wall Street. One scene in Occupy Unmasked show the union lead the charge to Bank of America, and then stop and direct the college kids into the bank. The college kids all got arrested, while the union stooges stood outside. One of the college girls holding a union sign was asked what it meant, and she had no idea.

I watched the movie with my little brother, who didn’t really have an opinion on unions one way or another. He’s now vehemently against unions.
