It's a question of living in "reality" compared to living in PC fantasyland.
If you had children going off, say, to college near a big city, and you didn't teach them the reality about the risk of violence, you would be a bad parent. Imagine a parent living in the jungle telling his kids that panthers and sheep are equally cuddly and equally dangerous. Panthers and sheep. That would be stupid, and doing the child no favors. To put your PC blinders above the safety of your children would be equally as stupid as that.
