Judging by the long-term results, that headline should read,
Look at Michigan to See How Unions Destroyed America's Middle Class!
No need to take it on faith.
Just drive or fly to Detroit and see for yourself!
Obama says it has nothing to do with economics and everything to do with politics eh? Sort of like the sound economic policy of getting the rich to “pay a ltlle more” to solve the 16 trillion dollar debt.
What theyre really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money.
I'd like to ask those insane union screamers just two questions :
If you hire someone to do a job for you, who ultimately decides what the work is worth?
If you are hired to work for someone else, who ultimately decides what the work is worth?
Actually, with respect to America, the middle class was already there. It was just known by a different name.
Back in the age of aristocracy, the term "middle class" wasn't used at all. The division was between the High and the Low. The High were royalty, aristocracy, knighthood and gentry. The Low were commoners.
But as society progressed through the Middle Ages and afterwards, a third class developed. Distinctively, they were people without the authority to lord it over others but also beholden to none. Unlike the peasant, they were free.
It's this class that was the original middle class. In America, they were known as "yeomen farmers" because America started off agricultural. A yeoman farmer was not wealthy or powerful, but he owned his own land and answered to no man: he only answered to the law of the land.
When you see this, you'll realize that America began as a middle-class nation. Those yeoman farmers had signature middle-class virtues like diligence, forethought and courtesy. They also had a surprisingly high literacy rate long before the first public school opened.
[For the last, you can thank Protestantism. Sola scriptura doesn't mean a lot if you don't know how to read Scripture. Consequently, the Protestants saw literacy as a religious duty except for slaves. The Catholics, of course, followed suit.]
So you could say with a lot of accuracy that America was always middle class. The yeoman farmer, and his analog in the trades, put the drop on the notion that the American middle class is peculiarly modern. The liberals who like to claim the unions built the middle class are like the EPA ideologues who like to claim that the EPA is responsible for the clean air in the countryside.
visit? i think you meant to say they have a full time staff there bowing all day.
That fourth one is actually in Manila
Michigan Central Station:
David Whitney Building:
First time I saw that I thought "photoshop." Reminded me of Favelas in Brazil.*
* A favela is the term for a shanty town in Brazil, most often within urban areas. In the late 18th century, the first settlements were called bairros africanos (African neighborhoods...) and they persist, little changed, to this day.
That’s all true - but at the same time Marxism, socialism, and to some degree communism (like the UAW early founders) but no mention of overt racism:
Enter Mayor Coleman Young.
This assclown stoked hatred towards whitey unlike anyone else, ever.
His timing was perfect to set up Detroit to be sacked up there with Rome and Alexandria.
I come from a family of Michigan farmers and small business owners. The feds only muck stuff up when they don’t stick to what our Founders intended for them to do. Most of my family has left Michigan and are happily voting in red state America.
You didn’t build that!
Yeah, I messed that one up. I had wanted to post five pics. I had six URL’s and meant to eliminate that one from the list. I inadvertently deleted another one instead. Incidentally, that pic came up in a search for Flint slums.
The Unions killed Detroit by pricing their Labor out of the car market.
Currently the Government Unions are killing us taxpayers by the much higher cost of Government Labor than Private Labor.
Labor Unions and Government see money as a zero sum game. Their job is to keep taking more and more and to be increasingly arrogant about it.
The more harm that Unions and Government can do to business and taxpayers the easier it is for them to strike or propose some hokey ‘Cliff’ to bully, gangster-style, money from us who actually do non-predatory work and pay taxes to the predators in the Unions and Government.
Both Unions and Government are so arrogant that they are offended that somehow they should be held accountable for the great harm that they have done to America.
Unions built the middle class huh. Let’s go ask the steel workers of Pennsylvania how that’s working out for them.
Henry Ford, and dozens of other "crass, heartless Capitalists" built the American Middle Class in Michigan and elsewhere.
Other than men like that, we would all still be sloping pigs on some dirt poor farm... if we were lucky. Ford and others had the freedom to dream and create, and everyone benefited.
Contrary to popular myth, Unions had zero to do with creating the middle class in this country or anywhere else. Unions only came to be because there was something valuable created, and the extra resources to support it.
Wealth invested (risked) in more efficient production, new ideas and methods and ever higher levels of productivity and value created the middle class.
Unions only came to be because there were excess resources that they could feed upon.
When we reach the point where the Henry Fords of today see investing in new ideas as financial suicide, we are done and the Middle Class will cease to exist.
We, i.e. 98% of us will go back to being peasants relying on our lords and masters for our subsistence while we slop the lord and master's hogs instead of following our own dreams.
I think that is exactly what the Alinski-Obama machine wants to happen. It is far easier to rule over totally dependent peasants than over a free and productive middle class who can make their own decisions.
Remember, from Carl Marx to today, the left never hated the rich. Most of the support for the left from Fredrick Engles 150 years ago to George Sorus today comes from the rich. The left would not exist without funding from the 'rich.'
From Marx to Engles and today's left there real target for destruction is not the rich, but the Bourgeoisie -- i.e. the Middle Class.
Obama talks about helping the middle class. BS. His intention is to destroy it.
Yep, looking at Detroit.
Obama so despises the private sector he can not give it any glory.
There is some incredible and beautiful architecture in the Midwest, most of it built many decades ago. The above reminds me of the Arcade in Cleveland.
I sure am glad he has such a big mouth, since he just keeps sticking feet into it.
Look on the bright side - the more speeches we force, the fewer executive orders he’s in his office to issue.
I have yet to see a Union come up with an idea to build anything...except a bigger Union. There is not a creative bone in their combined bodies. There is not one Union that invented anything, took a risk, employed anyone (except Union leaders and staff) or created a successful business. The Unions are simply blood-sucking leeches who live off of and have hoodwinked their captive members into submission and the belief that they are all too stupid to exist without the Union direction and control.
The unions destroyed the US auto industry!
I grant your points. I’ve looked at the census and demographic curves, as well as the tax receipts for Detroit. While everything you say is true, and was a contributing factor in the larger picture, there were enough whites left in the city who were holding down jobs, maintaining neighborhoods, serving on boards of this, that and some other thing, running government... until the ‘67 riots followed then (as you so precisely point out), by Coleman Young showed up on the scene.
The ‘67 riots accelerated the rate of white flight, Young effectively said “...And stay out!”
In the history of American urban governance, I can’t think of too many other mayors who were so fundamentally destructive of their cities. David Dinkins was hapless and incompetent, but Young was venal.
Young, BTW, was a UAW hack from way back.
I know it might seem weird to say this, but I really feel sorry for leftists and statists.
Buying votes and power with the promise of big gubmint largesse and checks and benefits is easy. But trying to change human nature is impossible. They are doomed to a life of misery.
Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy. Its one inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. You destroy the middle class (bourgeoisie), you will never rise above a certain level.
In most manufacturing industries, the impact of regulations is greater than the cost differential of labor.
We are preaching to the choir here.
It’s a lot more fun to express those free market views in a liberal forum. It makes their heads spin.
Even suggesting that mandatory seat belt laws is an unnecesary gubmint function will make them think we are from another planet.
We understand how the left thinks. I read the NY Times 10 free articles per month. :-)
Of course, the work crew would need an APC and guards with automated weapons.
No palm trees in Detroit, even with “global warming”....
“Who writes this stuff for him?”
“Detroit is the last place in the US where youd set up shop.”
Local Metro Detroit news stations have reported that there are people who have found Detroit to be an attractive place to live today. However, they’re mostly multi-culturalist liberals and people seeking a reliable “sanctuary city” among others.
Gee the sky sure looks pretty in that pic...
Look at Detroit. It looks worse than Hiroshima in 1945!
What caused this catastrophe?
Lyndon Bird’s Great Society for starters.
The evil unions who have grabbed for the brass ring and got a lunch pail full of them with some credit due to the auto company management who treated them like spoiled children.
At present the average wage is $137,000 dollars per year with generous breaks for binge drinking and smoking pot!
Now that it looks like the ruins of a city after many bombing runs. It appears that the only people who enjoy it are the arabs that live here by the thousands. It now resembles home to them.
Too bad the cliff isn’t closer to Detroit. A problem could be resolved a bit quicker.
You are so right. At what point did Barry decide to live in an alternate universe from everyone else?
And Detroit is a perfect example...
Determining truth from lie requires research and thought; something the gimme class has an aversion toward.
“And Detroit is a perfect example...”
Isn’t Dearbornistan also in Michigan?
..any reason to use Air Force One and give speeches
The purpose of unions is to extort businesses into paying union members more than they are worth on the free market. This results in higher pay for members, but reduced employment overall. States with right-to-work have lower unemployment.
LMAO! That was hysterical!
“The sad thing isnt that he says it. We now know a great number of imbeciles believe whatever comes out of his mouth...regardless of any factual basis. For about 2.5 years I thought enough people saw through this crap. Now I am just sad to see that is not the case.”
The true sad thing is the MSM is responsible for representing the American people and they have failed to live up to their jobs.
We should do everything we can to destroy the MSM and create true citizen journalists who will represent the people. We all knew who and what Obama was. The media hid him from the public and using groupthink, racism, sexism and homophobia managed to turn more than half the country against its founders.
Obamas continued attempt to subvert state rights is an assult on our federal system.
is an “assult” worse than an “insult” or “as*hole” “insult” gives us the “assult”
perhaps we can re institute the 10 th amendment and sanity to our government.
No, that has been photo shopped.
Yes, Dearbornistan is just west of Detroit. That’s another great place that went to heck.
