If I had to make a pie-in-the-sky guess, I would say less than 15% of the people on food stamps actually need them. The other 85% are lazy moochers who want their free food, big screen TV with cable, and leased luxury cars.

Giving people free stuff for any length of time makes them dependent on the givers and soon they demand it.

If it's not a hand up it's a hand out.

Millions commit food stamp fraud every year

Maybe even back to 2010.

Why don’t you, Mayor, ask WHY these people have to have this government “safety net” IOW, welfare instead of working to support themselves?

Where are the great jobs that Newark had in the 40s, 50’s and 60’s?

Why can’t people SUPPORT THEMSELVES?

Where are the jobs Obama promised?

I’m often reminded of what happened in Manhattan, NYC, which used to be one of the country’s biggest manufacturing centers in the 50s (if you can believe that). Along came Mayor Robert F. Wagner, who instituted all sorts of government programs, and the consequence was so many manufacturing jobs fleeing the city that he had to expand government services (a self-perpetuating disease). Of course, NYC was one of the first cities that instituted total government control of the mass transit systems, forcing the private subway companies to hold down fares to unprofitable levels until they eventually had to sell out to the city (the city-owned IND came along as unfair “competition” as well); expansion came to a standstill after that. Such policies rapidly expanded to neighboring cities such as Newark, of course, with even worse ramifications.

Maybe it helps Americans, maybe it helps families in need, maybe it’s a safety net that yadda yadda yadda ... but none of those changes the fact that it’s a government handout.

This reminds me of the people who say Social Security isn’t an “entitlement” because they’re entitled to it.
