After three years of declining sales, shipments of domestically sold beer are up by more than 1% in the United States this year. Sales of light beer and specialty beer, such as Budweiser Light Platinum, Shock Top, and Blue Moon, have been the driving force in the resurgence of U.S. breweries.

While sales of specialty, craft, and small-market beers have improved dramatically, many of the traditional, full-calorie beers that were once the staples of most breweries have fallen behind. In the five years ending in 2011, sales of Budweiser, which was once the top-selling beer in the country for years, have fallen by 7 million barrels. Sales of Michelob are down more than 70%. Based on data provided by Beer Marketer’s INSIGHTS, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the nine large — or once-large — beer brands with a five-year decline in sales of 30% or more...

Holy smokes... You know, if I had to settle for just one kind of beer for the entire rest of my life, there's a good chance it would be Victory Storm King Russian Imperial Stout. I can't imagine living within striking distance of the brewery...

I’m sitting here reading this and drinking a Carling Black Label, $10.99/case. You don’t buy beer, you rent it and I like to keep my rent cheap.

I used to drink Milwaukee’s Best Light by the truckload in college.

I stopped. Now, its sales are down noticeably.

I don’t imbibe but know one which is awful. I used to hunt with a guy in my office. He would never drink in the office but when we went out hunting he would buy a 24 pack of Schaefer Beer and by the time we got home it would all or nearly all be gone.

I normally would not hunt of shoot with someone drinking but I could never tell it affected him in the slightest. One day we had been out nearly all day and I was dying of thirst. I drank one of his beers just to get some moisture. That stuff was awful. I could barely get it down but I did need drink so I finished it.

Here in the Philippines, San Miguel is the king and about all I can get.
I buy a case every two days to quench the thirst of a group
of us expats that gather each afternoon in our seaside garden. The cost is 20 pesos (less then 50 US cents).
It is considered to be a good beer.

I remember 20+ years ago when craft, or strange beers, became the rage in the US, with many small bars specializing in them.
Their was a special on TV just this week (Natl. Geo? History?)
about the craft beer boom.

Have to admit I got spoiled living in the UK to good (cheap) French wine and Ale. As far as good canned beer can goes that’s imported....like Boddingtons when we can afford it.
