Ya know, I have a nephew, pretty big boy, weight lifter, played sports, successful accountant, good Republican. He was up in Boston 2 weeks back, after Celtics game, was attacked by a group of African Americans; bunch of them on him; got a double skull fracture from head beat off ground and just released from hospital, terrible headaches, bleeding, and he was lucky. I remember telling him once to get his ccw and start carrying as it's going to get bad down there. I bet he will now.

About 35 years back, I had Afris hang out a car window and blast away at me. I'll never forget those orange flashes and hearing them bullets; just happened to be the White Guy that wasn't going to give them my money. I've had a gun on me ever since and I'll probably never get a replay of that incident ever again in my life; crazy how things go.

When a racial game incident that what my nephew has went through occurs, entire family changes perceptions of ethnicity. Of course, mine changed 35 years back, but now other family members have changed. And they make jokes on TV about this sort of thing and laugh.

You're not the only one. I've gone bitter myself. So has my mother. Incidently, when Mom was a 10 year old girl, she had almost 10 Black girls attack her (this was 1948) but she managed to hold them off. I guess this is not new but it seems to have escalated over the last few years.

In 2008 when OBummer was elected, I saw 70 years of anger in Mom's eyes and I'm sure she saw 42 years of it in mine. Now it's 2012 and just put in 74 and 46 respectively. When the race was called for OBummer this year, Mom literally ran to the bathroom to throw up. Even so, I will still stand my by beliefs that I will not initiate violence nor stand in anyone's way through life unless there is an imminent threat to me, friends, family, pets, property and so on.

Our hearts have hardened. I do look at most minorities with apprehension and doubt until it is proven that a member of such believes as we do, freedom, you work for your stuff and you get to keep your stuff and Constitutional government. In short, they have to pass muster. I hate to be this way, but I, along with you it seems and many others, we are being painted in a corner here. Maybe it is the Russian in me or some deep animal impulse buried in the reptilian part of my brain, but if you're being dragged to a possible fight you dig in and prepare to fight to win. Failing that, do not lose.

Sad, isn't it? However, it is reality.

Sorry to hear about your nephew. Glad he is going to be ok.

These thugs are cowards and they would not have attacked a big man individually. Doubt he could have legally CCWed in Boston.

I live in the South and CCW when I am bike riding or walking in the city, or alone on a hike in the country. Have been menaced before, but not while carrying. Heaven help the would be muggers.
