Obama's Power Grab
Creators Syndicate ^ | December 7, 2012 | Betsy Mccaughey

President Obama went over the constitutional cliff this week, demanding more power than the U.S. Constitution allows any president to have. All Americans — regardless of party affiliation — should shudder at the president's attempted power grab and say no. Compromising on taxes and spending is fine, but not on the nation's bedrock principles.

To avert the so-called fiscal cliff on Jan. 1, 2013, Obama is insisting that House Republicans hand over to him Congress's authority to raise the debt ceiling. Obama is demanding a power no other president has ever had — to borrow without congressional prior approval. Under Obama's scheme, Congress would have to muster a veto-proof 2/3 majority in each house, an unlikely feat, to stop the borrowing. Obama's demand would put him in the driver's seat (instead of Congress) with no speed limit.

All 43 presidents before Barack Obama had to get Congress's approval. There's a reason. When government borrows, We the People have to pay it back. Allowing a president to borrow without Congress's consent would be no different from allowing a president to tax us without Congress's consent. The Constitution's framers saw that in Europe, monarchs borrowed and spent to aggrandize their own power, dooming the populace to repay the debt.

To prevent that, the framers allowed only Congress, the branch of government closest to the people, to borrow. (Article 1, Sect. 8). Obama's audacious proposal violates that provision. Yet he doubled down on it on Dec. 5, telling the Business Roundtable that negotiating with Congress "is not a game I will play." Sorry, Mr. President, but negotiating with Congress is precisely what the Constitution requires you to do.

The assault on the Constitution started when Lincoln was allowed to rescind Habeus Corpus. It has only gotten worse. Now with a neutered congress we have reaped what we have sown....the whirlwind. God save the Republic.

Not only must all spending originate in House, the Framers came within a hair's breadth of excluding the Senate entirely from appropriations. They never discussed allowing the Prez to have any say at all.

In any event, the House does not have a legitimate right to assign a power that We The People gave it.

The kenyan already has the power. It was granted to him through the past Congress not objecting or countering the Kenyan’s overt rule-by-decree. The kenyan has already changed duly enacted laws and ceased to enforced other laws and he has made some laws of his own. There has been some complaint from Congress about the uses to which he has put these assumed powers but not any objection to the fact that he is doing it. The precedent is set. The precedent is all powerful and the Constitution is null. There is no space to worry about him seizing dictatorial power. Congress has given it to him. He will exercise his new powers gently at first but will rapidly become the General Secretary or Chairman, perhaps Caliph. The Line has been fully crossed. There is no regaining what we have given away short of

America is suffering a cancer called “Liberalism.” The only cure is chemotherapy in the form of going over the “fiscal cliff.” It will be a painful treatment to America, but it will be the only way to cure the country.

Poor liberals want a government handout, rich liberals want power. America is subsidizing its own demise by funding liberalism through taxes or union dues. The money flow has to be cut off. Going over the fiscal cliff will help to reduce the flow of money to liberals. While that is good, I fear that it may not be enough.

What I fear is needed is a total bankruptcy by the country. A bankrupt America can't borrow money from China, and can't print it's way out of debt. The government won't be able to play Santa Claus when the treasury is bare.

When people are worried about where their next meal is coming from, they are too preoccupied to worry about gay marriage, or diversity, or political correctness.

"Obama is insisting that House Republicans hand over to him Congress's authority to raise the debt ceiling."

He is full on Delusional!

Or does he know something that we don't - like 'having flexibility after winning the election' at a time when most people were betting that he would lose it.

If these CS wimps in the House give up their authority over the purse strings to that asshat in the WH it means revolution.

There is no other recourse. The enemy is within in the GOP as well as the Democrat Party. They all have to go, and revolution is the only recourse we have left.

I don’t want, or expect any response.

We need “honorable men” to stand against Caesar’s ambition once again...

If Obama got the power to raise the debt limit, what do you think he might do?

I agree. Obama and the brown shirts think he already has the power to unilaterally raise the debt limit based on a bizarre interpretation of the 14th amendment.

Comrade Pelosi parroted as much a few weeks ago.

Who’s going to stop him - Boner?
