DeMint takes parting shot at Boehner
The Hill ^ | Thursday December 6, 2012

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who shocked Washington on Thursday with the announcement that he would resign his Senate seat in January to become president of the the Heritage Foundation, sent a parting shot at Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) over the “fiscal cliff” negotiations.

“I’m not with Boehner,” DeMint said on CNN’s "The Situation Room." “This government doesn’t need any more money, this country needs less government.”

“Speaker Boehner’s $800 billion tax hike will destroy American jobs and allow politicians in Washington to spend even more, while not reducing our $16 trillion debt by a single penny,” he said in a statement. “If neither party leadership is going to put forward a serious plan to balance the budget and pay down the debt, we should end this charade.”

Pelosi can only be speaker if the democRats had control of Congress

Not true. The Speaker is chosen by an absolute majority of votes cast. If enough Republicans protest Boehner and do it the wrong way, by abstaining, Pelosi could receive that majority.

The tantrums about "We need to be rid of Boehner even if it's Pelosi" need to be seriously re-examined. We do need to be rid of Boehner, but replaced with a conservative.

——I cannot honestly think of why else he would conduct such outrageous behavior lately.——

Prole made the above comment. You sent your reply to me. I do agree with it.

It sounds weird until you consider the amendment that made Senators elected by the people, instead of the states.
With the Vice President as Senate ‘leader’, the states then had control of who succeeded the President, and after that the people, with the house.

Oh, good catch! I never realized that.
The 17th Amendment is probably in the top three unrepealed bad amendments for screwing the country up, the other two are the 14th and 16th; respectively they did the following: destroyed representation of the States in the federal government, destroyed state-sovereignty by opening the gateway to the judicial tyranny that is 'incorporation' & opened anchor-baby issues & forbids the legitimacy of the government's debt from being questioned, and allowed the progressive income tax (arguably re-instituting slavery, but instead of private slave-holders everyone's master is the federal government).

“..even if it takes re-electing Pelosi in Jan....”

That’s quite possibly the most ridiculous thing ever posted - TWICE, yet - that I’ve read.

What is your reasoning?

Is it true that the Speaker need not actually be a member of the House? If so, then... how about Allen West? Bet that would turn Boehner a whole new shade of orange.

Maybe DeMint will endorse Romney again. He said he would not question Romney’s conservative credentials.

Boner needs a real threat to drive his actions in a more Conservative direction.

West would be incredible! Some freeper said it did not have to be a house member. I have no idea myself. The key is to herd the cats and get all house pubs to fall behind whoever it is. Ryan was my lst hope just because of name recognitio and he is a central figure to rally around. Now that he is supporting boehner I see no way to pull it off now.

Ok...understood. Better said.

But at this point, he doesn’t see Pelosi as a threat. He’s sees OUR OWN PEOPLE as the threat, proven by his actions.

And besides, GOP still controls the House so Pelosi wouldn’t have a prayer of getting it.

No offense, brother.

The Majority leader could serve the same function as the Speaker, except as presider. I like the House of Commons idea. Let the Speaker be neutral. however. In the steering committee, the Majority leader might have two votes, but not five. Let the conference have a real decision.

Yeah, the idea that the Speaker of the House should be neutral makes a lot of sense. In fact, I suspect that many of the Framers envisioned a neutral Speaker of the House as well. However, after Henry Clay got the ball rolling to expand the Speaker's powers in the House at the beginning of the 19th century, a precedent was set for an increasingly powerful Speaker of the House. Of course, since the powers of the Speaker are not defined in the US Constitution, the current powers of the Speaker of the House could be drastically curtailed by a simple majority vote in the House at any time. A simple change of the House Rules would be enough to do this.

In the 1890, Thomas Reed acquire such power that he was dubbed “Czar Reed,” Finally, under Joe Cannon, the House rebelled and the Speaker’s powers were reduced. Sam Rayburn, who served as speaker for about 20 years, managed the House largely by persuasion rather than by formal powers. “Mr. Sam” was a New Dealer but more populist in than liberal.

Boehner’s best protection is that right now there is no clear alternative.
