Sen. Jim DeMint to Head Heritage Foundation (leaving US Senate in January)
WSJ ^

Posted on 12/06/2012 7:31:44 AM PST by Perdogg

South Carolina U.S. Senator Jim DeMint will replace Ed Feulner as president of the Heritage Foundation. Mr. DeMint will leave his post as South Carolina's junior senator in early January to take control of the Washington think tank, which has an annual budget of about $80 million.

Sen. DeMint's departure means that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a Republican, will name a successor, who will have to run in a special election in 2014. In that year, both Mr. DeMint's replacement and Sen. Lindsey Graham will be running for reelection in South Carolina.

Yes, I’ve only heard Gowdy speak a couple times on TV, but came away extremely impressed.

Ooh. Now there’s a thought. :-)

I really like Tim Scott, one of the few campaigns I contributed to (from out of state)

Sorry to See Sen. DeMint go....he was one of the Good ones in the Senate. I just hope our Gov. Haley doesn’t decide on a bit of a political play just before HER 2014 re-election and nominate some RINO or worse a Democrat as to be “Bi-Partisan”.

Well, if there is a silver lining, Haley gets to appoint Demint’s successor. Maybe someone equally as conservative?

No. He’s in the Senate and Boner is in the house.

We are losing a good conservative in the senate, but Gov. Nikki Haley will replace him with a similar person who will also vote with the Republicans.

The Heritage Foundation will preserve the lamp of liberty and freedom for a while. May God allow our wonderful USA to learn the good way of a constitutional republic sometime in the future. Your great grand children may survive to see such a land.

DeMint knows that the Reid feifdom will leave the GOP neutered for the next two years and the stupid party will not be taking the Senate back in the near future. He also understands that we’re in a long game. Conservatives have ceded education and the media to the left and we have to start slowly taking control back. He’s going where he can actually do some long term good. Good for him.

I’ve thought a bit about this, this morning. And I see NO upside to this. I think this is terrible for the Conservative movement. I mean the Heritage Foundation sure hasn’t done anything, of late, to stem the Liberal tide.

I think this mutes his voice and takes him, almost completely, out of the equation. It also makes me wonder if he has given up on Conservatives ever taking the Senate back and if he knows that draconian filibuster reform is coming and just wants out.

This is bad, bad, bad, bad for us.

Any inside track on who Gov. Haley is gonna appoint?

He probably didn’t want to belong to any group that would allow a sexist, bigoted, racist such as Elizabeth Warren.

All the Heritage Foundation has done lately has been to provide perfect cover for defenders of Obamacare (since it appears to be rooted in a white paper they wrote in 1994). Conservative Constitutionalists who are for an individual mandate? Shame on them.

Any thoughts on Nikki Haley appointing herself?

If not how about Tim Scott.

I shall miss Jim, he was the spine of the Senate.

Nikki Haley or Tim Scott—either one would be OK with me. Whichever of those two not picked gets the honor of defeating Little Lindsey Graham in 2014.

“How about Trey Gowdy?” YES! He could more than make up for the loss of Demint.

A long shot at the present time but maybe down the road. Too many voters remember Bob Inglis' bid to move from House to Senate when DeMint first ran and won. Gowdy is Upstate, right where we want him in the House. He would have to carry the entire State in 2014 and that's pretty risky at this time.
