Pioneering jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck has died. Russell Gloyd, Brubeck's manager, says he died Wednesday morning of heart failure, after being stricken while on his way to a cardiology appointment with his son. He would have turned 92 on Thursday. The Dave Brubeck Quartet's pieces such as "Take Five" caught listeners' ears with exotic, challenging rhythms and became enduring standards. In 1954 he was the first modern jazz musician to be pictured on the cover of Time magazine. The quartet's 1959 album "Time Out" was the first ever million-selling jazz LP. "Take Five," a cut from that album by saxophonist Paul Desmond, became the group's signature theme.

Almost and sometimes the first note. It was so unique and recognizable.

Happy to hear Dave made it to 92. Hope he passed easily.

My favorite as well. Just posted it on Facebook for my kids as they got to hear that album almost every day.

When I was a kid of 19 living in Copenhagen in 1961 I went to the American Embassy Library and checked out "Time Out" repeatedly.

Also the fun part of getting the "Voice of America" hosted by Willis Conover was that the Soviets blocked every program. But at precisely at 10:00 pm VOA Jazz Hour came on. All blocking ended and the jazz came in clearly. I think Jazz played a huge role for freedom.

Last week’s Office (something to the affect of):

Angela: “That’s the stupidest thing in the world”.
Dwight:”No. The stupidest thing in the world is jazz.”
Angela (breaking down) exclaiming: “Why can’t they just play the right notes?!?”

Tears

A sad loss of a talent that defined a genre of music. RIP Mr. Brubeck with out thanks.

For those who are’t jazz fans, just go on Youtube and play anything from “Dave Brubecks Christmas”, you will be rewarded.

I’ve had “Take Five” as my ringtone for quite a while now. Sometimes I groove a little before I answer.

I thought Dave was going to live on long enough to accompany the Last Trump - syncopated Hebrew Jazz in a minor key.

It would have confounded anyone but true believers.

God Bless you Dave

RIP, Dave Brubeck. He turned me onto jazz as a child with “Take Five”. I used to play it over and over...

“I saw him play a couple of times. Wonderful!”

Me too! He started playing at hotels in his home town of Concord, CA. Then moved on to San Francisco.
