(Reuters) - Egyptian police battled thousands of protesters outside President Mohamed Mursi's palace in Cairo on Tuesday, prompting the Islamist leader to leave the building, two presidential sources said.
Police fired teargas at demonstrators angered by Mursi's drive to hold a referendum on a new constitution on December 15. Some broke through police lines around his palace and protested next to the perimeter wall.
Several thousand people had gathered nearby in what they dubbed "last warning" protests against Mursi, who infuriated opponents with a November 22 decree that expanded his powers. "The people want the downfall of the regime," the crowd chanted.
"The president left the palace," a presidential source, who declined to be named, told Reuters. A security source at the presidency also said the president had left the building.
Mursi ignited a storm of unrest in his bid to prevent a judiciary still packed with appointees of ousted predecessor Hosni Mubarak from derailing a troubled political transition.

We traded a dictator who danced to America’s tune with one who won’t. Nice foreign policy, Barry.
We want the downfall of OUR regime as well. We want to see our President leave his palace.
This whole article if read as applied to how we feel, is uncanny. Seems we do have something in common.
“the President has left the palace”...Is that the moozlo-egypto equivalent of “Elvis has left the building”?
What did Hillary call it?
“Smart Power” or some such BS?
Guess it isn’t so smart after all.
“We want the downfall of OUR regime as well.”
Some folks do. Other folks too busy viewing the latest pic of Kim Kardishan.
Obama: with respect to Morsi, our side won, and elections have consequences... er, uh , excuse me I got confused there for a moment. Cough.
Mursi, Morsi, whatever, will be lucky to escape from Egypt with hs life!
That’s going to be happening at the fence of the White House soon also.
Obama is doing to the world, the same he is doing to America. Crash and Burn.
At some point Morsi will have to call in the army to restore order
At that point we will know the end result...
If the army turns against him...
I think Morsi is not sure of their loyalty and that’s why they are sti on the sidelines...
He has thousands of Chemical WMD's at his control. And my guess is Hillary wont be drawing any red lines.
You can bet the military isn’t his best friend. Good point. This could be it for Morsi. He shouldn’t have listened to Hillary when she told him while in Gaza to go back home and do to Egypt what 0bama did to America; essentially proclaim himself DICTATOR. Listening to Hillary was a big mistake (Notice how Morsi waited until AFTER our election to make the big move). Morsi will be in a body bag soon.
He should have studied the history of how democrats support their stooges.
I don’t see what the problem was.. Morsi had MILLIONS $$$$$ from 0bama to buy support, just as 0bama has. He’s probably cutting checks to military leaders as we speak.
Three things are going against the Islamists in Egypt.
One, the majority of Egyptians aren’t radical Muslims. They want to just live and feed their families...and rape women in Tahrir Square.
Two, Egypt isn’t bursting with natural resources, and needs to stay nice with other nations(who bring in tons of tourist dollars) in order to keep some viability. And the Islamists are threatening to destroy the historic tourist destinations; Oy.
Three, the people need supplies of everything necessary to live, and the Islamists are more interested in subjugation and destruction than supply. Good luck with that.
And some of us smart folks find time for both :)
We could be seeing the end of Morsi in Egypt and FoxNews is talking about Anna Wintour. WTF?
The Egyptians don’t want him.
They DO NOT WANT a fundamentalist Islamic regime.
Too bad Lebanon and Iran didn’t have the same resolve...
I predict Morsi is already a ‘gonner’. He’s probably been told to leave the palace or be dead.
Lot of optimism on this thread.
I hope it is justified.
Remember: Morsi has a powerful friend in the White House, and he’s also purged the Egyptian army.
Why don’t we oppose Mursi as we opposed Mubarak? God forbid they should have a real democracy?
The optimism here is unfounded thus far.
The Egyptian military leaders could be orchestrating a coup as we speak. I’ve been watching this closely.. The protesters have kept the pressure on.. They have more guts than Americans do. ‘They don’t want no stinkin’ Dictatorship AGAIN’ Unlike in America, possession is 9/10ths of the law in Egypt. If Morsi’s on the run it could be over for him.
I think that’s a pretty spot-on assessment of the situation.
It will be interesting to see how this shakes out.
“Looks like the Egyptians aren’t happy with Obama’s little Dictator.”
I believe we are seeing the edges of some of the “overeaching” that I have been talking about in some of my other posts. Let’s hope this thing snowballs, and blows up in snot nose’s face.
Don’t forget that Morsi and the MB purged a lot of the officers when they took over.
Nice. Some folks are setting off Roman Candles. When in Egypt...I guess.
Didn’t the President just pledge some 300 Billion to Morsi? Where are we going to send the check now???
Hillary certainly does not want to make Huma mad. So if Mursi ends up using his Chemical WMD on the rebels and the White House does not condemn the act, can we at least start investigating Hillary's affair with Huma then ?
But if it wasn’t a proper, Stalinist-style purge (i.e., they are still among the living) those officers may continue to exercise great influence over the bulk of their troops. They might be back before we know it.
I’d hope Huma had better taste. But then again she did marry Wiener and have his kid.
Over so soon? And I had a fresh batch of popcorn all set.
Sure, but we would need a DOJ or GOP leadership up to the job.
Do let us know when police have any reason to think about launching teargas into a gathering of any size outside the White House Palace.
I'm not holding my breath. (No pun intended.)
The Muslim mindset is stuck way back in the past. Back in those days, it was typical for princesses to be sent to foreign royal houses for marriage. The princess had no choice in the manner. That was one way that alliances were maintained.
manner should read matter
Same thing happened in Europe...
Seems to be working for the Egyptians.
Very true. I’m not sure he had the confidence to kill the generals, although I believe he did imprison a couple. But it’s very possible that there are people loyal to them.
Rofl. Unfortunately there will never be any protest against this REGIME. We all know that.
