Fiscal Cliff Debate Is About Size of Government, Not Taxing "the Rich" Thomas Sowell

Amid all the political and media hoopla about the "fiscal cliff" crisis, there are a few facts that are worth noting.

First of all, despite all the melodrama about raising taxes on "the rich," even if that is done it will scarcely make a dent in the government's financial problems. Raising the tax rates on everybody in the top two percent will not get enough additional tax revenue to run the government for ten days.

And what will the government do to pay for the other 355 days in the year?

All the political angst and moral melodrama about getting "the rich" to pay "their fair share" is part of a big charade. This is not about economics, it is about politics. Taxing "the rich" will produce a drop in the bucket when compared to the staggering and unprecedented deficits of the Obama administration.

No previous administration in the entire history of the nation ever finished the year with a trillion dollar deficit. The Obama administration has done so every single year. Yet political and media discussions of the financial crisis have been focussed overwhelmingly on how to get more tax revenue to pay for past and future spending.

The very catchwords and phrases used by the Obama administration betray how phony this all is. For example, "We are just asking the rich to pay a little more."

What irritates me is all the bread and circuses about entitlement cuts when there are a million other less politically sensitive things that could be cut.

Sure things like PBS, bike paths and hiking trails are just drops in the bucket but enough drops will fill a bucket. We should force the democrats to make a public choice.

This bears repeating:

But it is not the same politically, so long as gullible people don't look beyond words to the reality that inflation taxes everybody, the poorest as well as the richest.

So while Obama claims to be John Q. Everyman, he's actually destroying his own constituency without making it seem so. He can continue to blame the Republicans for the declining state of social and cultural affairs in the country while he eats Wagyu beef under one of his 54 Christmas Holiday Trees.

We need to find a way of turning the slaves against the master.

Fiscal Cliff Debate Is About Size of Government, Not Taxing "the Rich"... Thomas Sowell

Speaker Boehner. You should be shouting this all day, every day.

When a country is running annual deficits >$1 TRILLION, it is a SPENDING problem. Not a revenue problem!

As Mark Steyn points out, even if you confiscated every penny the Forbes 400 have, it would be enough to cover just over one year’s federal deficit. And after that you’re back to square one. It’s not that “the rich” aren’t paying their “fair share,” it’s that America isn’t. A majority of the electorate has voted itself a size of government it’s not willing to pay for."

We need to find a way of turning the slaves against the master.

With the communists running the schools, educating the masses as to the truth will be near impossible. Also consider that those masses need to want to be educated.

The 51% who voted for Obama are no better than an ostrich with its head in the sand. They don't want to know the intricacies of running a country. They just want their cable TV, Obama phone, fool stamps, and electric cars. Consequences be damned!

I can guarantee we won’t win by beating them up either.

Reagan certainly wouldn’t have won if all he offered was angry threats to punish.

You can’t educate someone who wants to be blissfully ignorant. Telling them the truth puts them in a fit where they run away with their fingers in their ears yelling, “LA LA LA LA LA!”

You’re doing a real fine job of demonstrating it.

I beg your pardon, sir. Would you like to clarify your statement? Did I say something to offend?
