Man hit by vandals after helping Sandy cleanup

Art McFarland, 1202/2012

HUNTINGTON (WABC) -- Paul Nosak, a tree-servicer owner says he had always dreamed of bringing his company to New York and making a difference.

Nosak was part of a clean-up outside the Huntington Baptist Church, where several huge trees had fallen on the roof. A local tree service originally said that the removal of the trees would have to wait until January...

Nosak then saw the damage as he passed through the neighborhood by chance. He then walked into the church to offer his immediate services...

A team of eight workers joined Nosak and got the job done in 48 hours, but with his tractor trailers and other equipment parked outside the church overnight, Paul returned Saturday morning to serious vandalism - tires were slashed, a major piece of equipment was damaged, diesel fuel was siphoned and air hoses that are part of a brake system were cut.

There is still so much work to do in the New York/New Jersey area and people really want to get the structural damage to their properties fixed before winter.

They had enough time to damage this kind man's equipment but not enough time to actually do the work.

Not all New Yorkers are like this but enough are that contractors need to be very vigilant about security.

I am sick and tired of reading and hearing about these worthless thugs that are permeating our society. The USA has lost its way. May the Lord have mercy on us!

This is not a crime area where one gets mugged randomly like in NYC

This is a town 50 miles east of NYC. It is a commuter town and is extremely community minded, if you will. Also inhabited by some with much wealth, but who enjoy relative anonymity.

Heard of a guy back in the seventies who went against a union and was flattened, to death mind you, by a steamroller in his parent’s driveway. My - at the time- steady date told me about this the morning after it happened and was upset. Can’t imagine what else the story could have been, but I guess no way of really knowing.

Your “May God have mercy on us” prayer is far less than appropriate. “Us”, that is us non-union Americans are not the source of the evil in this case.

How about: “May God rot the unions and their members.”

Just a suggestion.

The good folks in this particular town after ahurricane when they need help do not take the time and effort and abuse to their equipment to “vandalize”. read between the lines an dunder the headline. This is a turf deal.

I ran across a tree trimming crew filling up their truck at a convenience store just west of STL about a week ago. They said that they just returned from the NYC area where they spent long days handling down trees for the electric utility and spent their nights almost camped out at a nearby college. they were fed by the Red Cross. They looked tired.

They also told them that one of their crew was assaulted while working and had his jaw broken.

If there is another disaster anytime soon, do you smug people in NYC think the rest of us will be as eager to come to your aid? You vote like you worship big government. Let big government rescue you!

From what I've read in articles about the areas that surround NYC, they are mostly Republican. This destruction sounds like union thugs to me.

I live in Western New York and the suburbs around cities is predominately Republican or Conservative. Just because the cities are controlled by the Democrats doesn't mean we like it. In some districts, there are not enough Republican's to control the elections.

During the Governor race (Cuomo) I noticed quite a few thugs hanging around my polling place. Never noticed that happening in the past.

I haven't sent a dime to this tragedy, and I won't....sorry for the people but they have to face what the real problem is ....their govt and their unions....

I had thought of joining a group to go help with disasters in a couple of years when I retire. No more.

I'm well equipped, as a ham radio operator, logger, have a Unimog, generators, and equipment and skills for such things.

After reading here and elsewhere how things are getting, I'll be doing other things now.

Several days before the vandalism, Nosak received a hostile voicemail on his cell phone saying,

“You’re out here trying to take our money. That’s kind of hard, man. We wouldn’t go to Oklahoma and do that to you guys.”
