It looks like the Iranian Navy really wanted people to see its new submarine. In a live broadcast on state TV on Wednesday, the Islamic Republic showed off a new Sina 7 submarine that is painted in an unusually bright turquoise blue hue...

I think the Columbian Drug cartel build more sea worthy looking semi-submersibles to smuggle their cocaine.

and one to pray they don't die in their three-man blue coffin.

Or pray that they get all 72 virgins each.

Why is their flag at half mast?

In 1977, I was in a maintenance school for the SSBN (ballistic missile submarine) ESM (electronic warfare support measures)suite. In that class were three Iranians who were not otherwise cleared to even be in the building. The shah was our buddy at the time, but I never had a good feeling about that.

The US Navy does flotillas too. In the Iranians’ case, a flotilla is pretty much the only time something like one of these minisubs would be available for viewing; the rest of the time they would be hidden away, just as the US’s subs are. So seeing their sub in “flotilla” paint is only to be expected.

Agree with your comments about the submerged portion of the submarine being a lot bigger that what is showing on the surface.

The unusual paint job maybe, as you write, simply intended to make it more visible during surfaced flotilla parades. However, IIRC, the Persian Gulf /Straits of Hormuz are pretty shallow bodies of water. When seen from above, a turquoise-painted submarine operating at or just below the surface might gain some protection from being nearly the same color as light being reflected up from the bottom in shallow water. Once the bottom drops to greater depths correspondingly less light is reflected up from the bottom and a darker color (like black) probably works better to conceal the submarine from observation when working at shallow depths.

Just a thought from a nonexpert.

I used to work at The Anaheim Theme Park. Occasionally, the unions would threaten to strike, so they would send us “back stage” office types out to the park, and learn how to operate the attractions. My buddy was assigned to a submarine, and came back from training to relate a near disaster story of some moron forgetting to close the hatch, as the boat “prepared to dive, Dive, DIVE”. :)

There was some guy on FR a couple years ago claiming that an Iranian submarine could have been behind an SLBM launch off the coast of California. You know the “missile” that made the mystery exhaust plume on TV.

Tried to point out the reality of the Iranian navy to him, but there was no arguing with the secrit-missile crowd. One of the dopiest episodes ever on FR or the broader blogosphere.

I notice they grayed out the background. Are they in the big tank on some movie lot?

"Why is their flag at half mast?"

That's what we used to ask my sons when they left the fly on their pants unzipped.

Actually the color makes sense. Look at photos of the Mediterranean Sea and you will see why it’s this color.

Colors change as you go deeper, more blue less red. This sub will blend in with the sea/ocean color around 30 feet down.

The Israeli subs are also painted a bright color.
