WH 'surprised' GOP laughed at Geithner offer

President Obama’s spokesman said he was “surprised” that Republicans laughed at a proposal from Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner that would raise taxes by $1.6 trillion, increase spending, and give the president unilateral control over the debt ceiling.

“I was surprised they [the Republicans] were surprised,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters today during the press gaggle when asked about the proposal Geithner made in a meeting with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. “There is no reason for anybody to be surprised.”

Geithner foreshadowed this proposal with comments made to Bloomberg TV last week. “It would have been time a long time ago to eliminate it,” he said.

McConnell said Obama “ought to be embarrassed” about the proposal. “[H]ere we are witnessing the President running around the country thinking the campaign is not over yet,” he told Hugh Hewitt. “And they’re presenting laughable suggestions from the Secretary of the Treasury . . . It’s a serious blow to his credibility.”

This is going to be the media story for the next two months during the negotiations — the GOP “laughed” at Obama’s proposals, as if the GOP isn’t serious or isn’t willing to negotiate. Remember during the budget negotiations in the 90s, how Newt Gingrich’s alleged temper tantrum over not being seated at the front of Clinton’s plane became the story of how the GOP was being childish during those negotiations.

The laughter wasn’t an indication of surprise.

“There is no reason for anybody to be surprised.”

True enough. We have always known that the Democrats want higher taxes AND unlimited spending.

What I’d like to know is why GOP Congressional leaders are agreeing to meet with Obama’s cabinet members on these issues.. the talks should be with Obama directly. If Obama sends a cabinet member or staffer, the Boehner and McConnell should send their own staffers to meet with them.

I could never be a senator.

I’d counter offer by climbing up on the table, dropping my drawers and leaving a steaming pile right in from of Turbo Tax Timmy.

You’ve got my vote.

In a way it’s understandable. After serving as a US Senator and then 2 years into his first term as President he was surprised to learn there’s no such thing as a “shovel ready job”.

Then one the first paycheck in 2013 when everyone's taxes goes up the Republicans should say "we tried to stop, but the Democrats raised your taxes."

Right - because the Republicans are such good communicators and know how to get their message and the truth out despite the MSM.

The spineless Pub's will ultimately get hammered over this, no matter which way it goes - they are worthless.

The US can solve it’s debt problem by:

1)Not allowing illegal immigrants to collect money for procreation in the U.S.

2)Limiting the number of children the state will support at two kids. If people on welfare wish to have more than 2 children, they will have to find a way to support them.

The republicans need to stop the procreation of generational dependency on the government. They’ve got nothing left to lose and must take a stand.
The taxpayers are BROKE.

“I was surprised,” said Hitler, upon learning that England and France had declared war on Germany after Hitler invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Hitler then turned angrily to Ribbentrop and asked, “Now what?” However, France and Britain did not act on their declarations immediately, and on 17 September, Hitler’s ally, The Soviet Union, invaded eastern Poland.
