NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Pamela Waldron makes $7.75 an hour as a cashier at the KFC in New York's Penn Station, where she has worked for eight years.
That's just 50 cents above the New York state minimum wage. The 26-year old nursing student, and mother of two, says she has asked for a raise but her pleas have gone unheeded for weeks.
Finally, on Thursday, around lunchtime she joined a protest of about 40 fast food workers who walked out of their shifts, carrying placards and shouting slogans to bring attention to their cause of fighting for higher wages and the right to unionize. The protest was held outside a Burger King (BKW) near Penn Station.

Fast food work is an entry-level job folks. The pay is not meant to support a family...just like sweeping floors at Walmart isn’t.
I worked a factory job in the early 90s. It wasn’t much money, but it was OK for the time. My duties were extensive and took some knowledge which I gained through experience.
I asked for a 50 cent/hr raise after 2 years. They only gave me a quarter. I got a better paying job and quit which is exactly what these people who don’t like their current pay should attempt to do. No one is forcing them to stay at this job.
Hey Pam, try looking for a better paying job or try to work hard enough to be considered for a KFC manager position. I love these people. They deserve a better wage because well, they just do. Don’t work harder to get ahead, just ask for more money. Typical democrat mentality. We are so screwed as a nation.

The result would be that the high end restaurants would still exist, but the fast food industry would be gutted, and only vending machines would be profitable.

The typical democrat mentality is that she is a member of a "class." And when they talk about classes, they are always frozen, no one can ever improve their lives or jobs, no one can join a new "class." She is part of the minimum wage class, forever doomed to get minimum wages, trapped in a hopeless situation. Her only solution is to get the minimum wage raised.

Manager: Well, now that we have the union, that is out of my control. The Union say Steve is next based on seniority.
Lib: Well, can I get a raise than?
Manager: no. According to the Union contract, you will get a 10 cent raise next year.
You can bet THIS is what the ‘community organizer’ in the WH was orchestrating with his co-conspirator agitators right after his re-election. OWS wasn’t effective enough, I guess.

this was the thing that irritated me most about the attack ad on romney spending cuts wold kill middle class jobs - but the imagery running was of entry-level food workers - these are not middle class jobs. they are entry level jobs.

Yes, it irritates me, too. You’re right - this is not the kind of job one should expect to support a family on. She mentions her husband works to support her family. Well, that’s the way it is supposed to be, Pamela.
Considering the employee turnover that exists in the fast food industry, I would say after working there 8 years - this woman ought to be at least an assistant manager by now.

So, she *can* be “permanently replaced”.

Fast food work is entry level. Doesn,t matter who you are or where you are at. If you want more money find a better job. There are only so many dollars to go around in fast food

honestly I’ve never understood why people stay working in fast food. Anytime I’ve gone to a busy fastfood restaurant I have to marvel at the efficiency of the machine. The worst service I’ve gotten has been at slow restaurants. I would think after two years working fast food... there would be any amount of jobs she could do in a fast paced environment. AS a former employer... I happily hired people who had fast food experience.
Find a higher paying job commensurate with your skills, and stop whining.
If this was some where else I might agree with you. The volume of business is enormous. I read once people who owned a 24 hour pizza shop in Penn station made 20 million dollars a year. Since it is in the most expensive place to live in the world. The cost of transportation for workers is outrageous. Everything in NY city is nuts. I lived there. Just imagine how many times more money than an average Burger King or McDonalds in a city of 15 million. If these fast food places want quality workers they should give them a raise. IMHO.
NYC: 30 years ago I worked as a waitress there and GUESS what they were allowed to pay me, because I could earn tips?
$1 an hour or $40 a week. My rent was $300 a month!
Think how different it must be now and wonder how much this person’s tips might be. Also, how did she manage to pay her rent all these years on this type of pay?
I would say this. Fast-food is ok to start out at....but you need to plan on staying less than four years and moving up to something else. If your life plan is to stick to Fast Food....unless you can get up to shift manager or store manager in eight years...I wouldn’t be sticking around. I will admit that a shift-manager does make a good salary at McDonalds....but if you aren’t there by your late twenties....you aren’t going anywhere.
In this economy? Where? Also, where are the FReepers that believe that loyalty should be rewarded with a raise now and then? Should employers NEVER give a raise? If so, why not?
It’s a fast food joint. They’re all over NYC. There’s probably one within walking distance of Pam’s home. A couple of my kids worked fast food in high school. You know why? They could walk or ride their bikes there. And I live in suburban Philadelphia. If you decide to make fast food your career then you need to get into management if you expect a living wage. Otherwise, it’s a job for kids and retired people. 8 years and still a regular shift worker? Shame on her.
Fire their asses. Give raises to anyone who didn’t bitch and moan....
I almost got thrown out of my college economics class for pointing out that Ebenezer Scrooge (Dickens A Christmas Carol) must have been paying a fair wage to Bob Cratchet. There was no slavery. If Bob Cratchet could have made more money someplace else he would have gone someplace else. This arose from a discussion about Wal-Mart. A woman in the class had a friend with an advanced degree who had taken a job at the local Wal-Mart for $12/hr. The woman in the class felt that Wal-Mart should pay her friend more because she had a college education. (Turns out Wal-Mart was the only employer in this tiny, western town.) I said, No, if the friend took a job at $12/hour then that was what shed sold her time for. If she wanted to use her degree then shed have to move someplace where the degree was needed. The class was incensed. You should not have to move to get employment!
BTW, Ive been laid off and the closest job I can find where I have a shot is four states away and it will pay half what I was making. I own my home outright and cant sell it in todays market without taking a beating. If I get this job, I will pack the Jetta and MOVE!
Fire them and put up HELP WANTED signs as they protest outside. They will be killed by the stampede of those seeking jobs.

The automotive industry in Central KY is booooooming. I need Engineers, Industrial Maintenance Techs, and Section Managers in a very bad way.
After eight years she should have learned enough to advance to manager instead of still being a cashier. She obviously doesn’t have what it takes and deserves no better than min wage. Unskilled and entry workers don’t deserve large wages and should be thanking big government for regulating the min wage or they’d be making what they’re qualified for and that’s even less.
They want a “living wage” on a job skill set for a semi-literate high-school student?
MOVE OUT OF NYC so you can afford your rent. You don’t belong there if you can’t feed yourself.
Taken in the context of the Fiscal Cliff, the union actions to raise wages are necessary. The unstated solution for resolving the debt issue is inflation resulting from devaluation of the US$.
To sustain the inflation, the people must become comfortable with the constant rise in prices. The discomfort is eliminated by increase in wages. So far, with unemployment at unacceptable levels, labor is not only cheap but plentiful. Employees have no leverage to increase their wages even though their purchasing power is diminished.
The union effort is an attempt to make a general national effort to raise wages that sidesteps the individual employers. For the inflation to neutralize the debt, it must be general and that includes wages. Once the wage inflation resumes after a 25 or so year hiatus the general inflation can proceed upward smoothly.
It will happen. Wage inflation will begin in the midst of unacceptable unemployment. In spite of a populist president, the havenots will have less after the inflation
