Democrats seek more benefits for jobless

Warning that more than 2 million Americans are poised to lose their long-term unemployment insurance, some Democrats are calling on Congress to extend the “economic lifeline” before it expires next month.

Some Republicans, though, are demanding that an extension of jobless benefits—and any other form of new spending—be offset through savings or spending reductions elsewhere in the federal budget.

In a letter to party leaders last week, Sen. Jeff Sessions said that extending the unemployment benefits another year carries a $26 billion price tag.

Couple that with the cost of keeping the 2 percent payroll tax cut on the books and averting a cut in payments to doctors who treat Medicare patients and the Alabama Republican said that the bill for new spending rises to nearly $130 billion. …

If actions really do speak louder than words, one would have to conclude that the democrats simply seek more jobless.

Bless those eager and looking for work. To Hell with the scumbags perpetuating the dependency.

It’s odd. I feel as though I’m in some messed up parallel universe where the game du jour is to flaunt and push the envelope of corruption to its absolute extreme. Back in the universe where Spock has no beard, they’d all be arrested, assigned court appointed legal council, and the trials would commence in the morning. Hangings would procede on a continuous schedule so as not to hold things up with needless delays and downtime for routine maintenance like squeeky trap door hinges that need oiling.

Why not just make it so that if you work for a year you can get unemployment for the rest of your life.

I see no need to limit it to 2 or 3 years.

Make it a lifetime retirement plan.

Does this need a tag?

Yeah? What's his point?

I sure hope they don't plan to just extend the unemployment pay. If they care about people at all, they will also insist on an unemployment pay raise. Where is the decency?

I guess that delaying the inevitable pain until it has to become agony is the same as creating a job-friendly environment...

The Chinese are not buying it. The federal reserve is printing the money to cover the unsold bonds.

No question about this! You can't keep taking from the productive and giving to the unproductive without repercussions.

I've been out of a real job for 9 months. I've been planning for months to go into business for myself if at the end of December I don't find anything. Unemployment is temporary, it's not supposed to be there for years. I figure I've used up what I've paid in with all those taxes the gov't confiscates from my 35+ years of paychecks, I have to contribute to my own livelihood again even if it means I end up starving for a while.

Life isn't fair, but the Idea of America is still great!

The government puts a 6% tax on earnings to pay for unemployment. That’s not enough, so the states borrow from the federal government to make up the difference.

They are covering their asses and making sure that the consequences of their policies don’t affect people to the point that they actually do something about it.
