Egypt's Morsi Pulls Back Power Grab, Makes Deal w/ Judges

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has agreed to pull back decrees announced last Thursday granting himself sweeping new powers.

The Islamist leader originally told a panel of Egypt's top judges that he would not change his stance on the edicts, insisting that he was acting within his rights. But according to a report by a television network allied with the Muslim Brotherhood, an agreement worked out with top judicial authorities was reached late Monday.

The decrees had barred the judiciary from disbanding the Constitutional Assembly or the Upper House of the Parliament, placing the presidency and the committee writing the new Constitution above the authority of the judiciary.

Under the deal reached late Monday night, most of the president's actions would be subject to review by the courts. But the Constitutional Assembly involved in writing the nation's new Constitution would also be protected from being dissolved by the courts before its work is completed.

Egypt's Supreme Court had dissolved the previous parliament after an election filled with irregularities resulted in its being comprised of an Islamist majority in both houses.

Judges and prosecutors went on strike in Cairo and numerous other cities throughout Egypt on Sunday and Monday to protest what they saw as an "assault" on the independence of the courts. Activists denounced the edicts as a brazen power grab. Morsi defended the decrees, saying they were necessary in order to protect the country's transition to democracy, and implement reforms.

Spokesman Yasser Ali told journalists at a news conference the Muslim Brotherhood-backed president assured the judges the decrees did not "infringe" on their own authority in any way.

How many judges in America would face down Obama? Not many, I suspect.

If they don’t drag him by his hair to a place of execution for trying to install himself as dictator while they still can, they’ll be sorry later. That’s guaranteed.

Morsi made ‘em an offer they couldn't refuse... Abdul Fattah el-Sisi held a gun to their heads, and Morsi assured them that "either their brains, or their signatures would be on the agreement”.

Sadly, 70% of the people there wanted him and the Muslim brotherhood, and want Sharia Law.

It is a minority opposing him.

The only hope for Egypt at this point, IMHO, in terms of our interests and peace for Israel is with the Egyptian Military who are largely western trained and who can still over throw the man...and I am hoping they will.

If they let it go too long, they will slowly be removed from power and replaced by those deciated to the new regimn and its plans.

If the Egyptian military does act, afterwards, like the predecessor, they will have to keep the islamic militants under tight control, and sadlt they will end up doing so without US support until we can bring sanity back to the White House and the US Senate.

Killing is the basis of Islam. It is what they do best.

I must kill the democracy in order to save it...

Morsi is afraid of the Egyptian judiciary? How so? He wasn’t afraid of the army that held the real power when he subjugated them. We’re to believe the judiciary is more powerful than the Egyptian military? I don’t think so.

What type of ‘face down’ Obama do you envision? Are we talking municiple court Judges? State or Federal appeals court Judges? Or Scotus?

The courts can only react to pleadings.

The enforcement arm of SCOTUS is public opinion. Think about that when you talk about judges facing down Obama.

Morsi sees the widespread opposition and riots, and did the only thing he could do, co-opt the thing by pretending to strike a deal with the judges. Remember, he was going to choose a woman, maybe a Christian, as a VP? What happened to that? Like all Muzzies, he’s a Liar.

Too late IMO. Morsi has already replaced a number of key generals and Obama is backing the Muslim Brotherhood and using American aid to support the Islamists.

Who gave the order to our military to “stand down” and NOT implement plans to rescue our men in Benghazi on 9-11-12?

When?

Why?
