CINCINNATI — One of Cincinnati’s largest employers fired approximately 150 employees Wednesday for failing to get a required flu shot.

TriHealth offered all of its 10,800 employees free flu shots. Employees had a month to get the flu shot. The deadline was Nov. 16. Employees who did not get the shot were terminated Wednesday, a company spokesperson said...

Not exactly:

Cochrane review of flu vaccine not as definitive as health officer suggests

Vancouver researcher finds flu shot is linked to H1N1 illness

The 36000 deaths/yr was cited by julie gerberding, former head of the CDC, with no background information given. She's now the head of Merck's vaccine division. No link there. I'm sure. The CDC apparently collects ALL deaths from pneumonia (from any cause) and collates them under 'flu death'. We don't know for sure because the CDC has denied any FOIA requests into the specifics of that particular data set citing (last I heard) 'national security'.

Most of the safety and efficacy studies are run by the makers. Who knows if they're truthful or accurate. Given the general corruption present in the REST of government, it doesn't seem rational to expect that ONE particular governmental agency to be squeaky clean when all the rest of them are filthy.

Then, there's this:

Baxter admits flu product contained live bird flu virus

Baxter Sent Bird Flu Virus to European Labs by Error

Thousand of flu vaccines recalled

I’ve never had any ill effects from flu shots either, not even a slight fever or fatigue; the worst was a little soreness at the injection site and I didn’t even get that with this year’s shot.

Flu shots do not give people the flu. However the later in the flu season that someone gets a flu shot, the more likely they are to get the flu before the vaccine takes full effect.

People need to understand that the flu shot takes about two weeks to confer immunity so it is possible to catch the flu during that time and even then it only protects against the most prevalent strains of flu that season (that’s why there is a new flu shot formulation every year). And in some years the virus match is better than in others, but even with a less than perfect match to the prevalent strains, one is still better protected against a severe case of flu with a shot than without.

Also the flu shot does not protect against the common cold, which having many symptoms similar to and in common with the flu, is often mistaken for the flu. Generally the flu comes on very suddenly, tends to last longer, is often accompanied by very bad body aches and a high fever, sometimes nausea and vomiting, deep chest congestion, a “dry” cough and fatigue lasting for a week or more whereas the common cold often starts with nasal congestion and a sore throat, tends to come on a bit more gradually and tends not to last as long. The most important difference is that the flu is much more likely to result in pneumonia or secondary bacterial infections which can be life threatening, especially in the very young, the very old in people with underlying health problems.

I will also add that I suffer from allergies this time of year (late fall through winter). At least once a year I’ll get an allergy attack so severe that it very much feels like a cold or flu – the sudden onslaught of uncontrollable sneezing, runny nose accompanied by deep body aches, fever, chills and fatigue. I feel like I’ve been hit by a freight train and probably look like it. The last time this happened my boss told me (pleaded with me) to go home. The only way I know that it’s not a cold or the flu is that the symptoms completely disappear the next day.

“Had two flu shots in my life, caught the flu both times.”

I had one flu shot and got the flu, plus my arm swelled, turned red and was hot - doc said never to take another one as I was allergic to what they put in the shot.

I am very allergic to iodine - shrimp, crab, clam, and if I have one bite of any of those, I'm ultra nauseous three days, my skin turns red and gets hot and I have chills that three days.

I don't take flu shots no matter what a doc says (I'm the one who gets sick, he doesn't). In winter, I try to stay far enough away from people who are sick so that their spittle when they cough, doesn't get to me. I wash my hands well when I get back from going somewhere.

I remember being forced to be vacinated for polio by the government as a school chld.

I,too, remember having to take the Salk vaccine when it first came out. It was the greatest blessing ever devised by Man.

Too late for my cousin Rosalee, she died a long, lingering death from this horrible disease, along with thousands of others, mostly children.

Thanks to vaccination, this disease has been all but eradicated.

Even those who survived the disease face problems later in life. Yeah, we should all refuse to be vaccinated for anything. /s

The same happened to me. I HAD to get a flu shot in the Air Force. A couple of months later I got the flu real bad. Never had one since and never had the flu again!

wow, you can’t make your own health care decisions any more?

Not in Red Hampshire...most 'health care systems' (LOL) MANDATE flu shots or you WILL be fired. Employees hit with very little warning; most had NO TIME to find another job. Several have quit, many employees scared to death...especially employees with no patient contact.

Healthcare workers are well aware of the special requirements their field has. They know its a requirement.

These are only 2 of many articles about the link.

If you KNOW it is a requirement going in, as with the military; fine. But springing it on people after they have been employed five, ten, twenty-five years; then only allowing them a short time to find other employment in this economic climate is unforgivable.

150 idiots. The military requires every person to get them or get kicked out. What makes these jerks so special. I am so glad that they fired them. This is GREAT news!!!!!

When you enter an agreement with a company or person, you are simply making laws that bind the two parties. It is your choice to enter into the agreement or not.

I felt the same way when I wanted my female employees to have sex with me, as a condition of their employment.

I take 10k ius of Vit. D per day but I stopped getting the flu and colds long before I started that. I have herbs that I can kill either one of those infections with immediately.

150 people who are more scared of needles than losing their job. In 1918, Influenza killed 1% of the world’s population. I want all the advantages I can get.

In 1918, 27% of the world’s population contracted the Spanish Flu. 3% of the world’s population, or 50 million people, died from it. Life ground to a halt. The economy stalled to a virtual standstill. Healthcare providers were among the hardest hit, as well as among the disease’s most prolific vectors. That was the result of pandemic when rail and ship were the fastest forms of transportation.

Now, extrapolate that forward to 2012, with ubiquitous air travel connecting all parts of the globe, and a much larger population, concentrated in much larger cities. A new pandemic would spread faster, and could potentially kill hundreds of millions, or even billions of people.

Unlike in 1918, such a pandemic might not just emerge from random mutation, but might be intentionally created as a terrorist weapon. Given the potentially devastating consequences, it is not unreasonable to make a flu vaccine a requirement for healthcare professionals, just like it is not unreasonable to make it a requirement of military service.
