Every family’s got one, at least. That hardcore conservative who makes every Thanksgiving get-together a nightmare by sounding off, unprompted, on how liberals are ruining this country with their taxing and their spending and their gay-marrying, and how back in my day blah blah blah.
Usually you just keep your head down and stare into your turkey and try not to make eye contact with anyone. Then the next morning in the shower you remember what you should have said in response.

Actually I’m the one who refuses to talk politics at most family gatherings. I will talk about things like prepping because even if they are brain damaged liberals, they are family and I don’t want them to die or have to depend on me for survival.
I think I make them more nervous by not arguing politics with them.

In general, conservatives tend to keep their opinions to themselves at such gatherings. I do not suffer fools so I know I must do this.
I think the msnbc staff is projecting quite a bit here. Libs are usually the ones who can't hold their tongue.

How about, I love you but we have strong disagreements on this. Let’s put politics aside for now and enjoy our family and not let disagreement and bad feeling mar the day.
We’ve had extreme lefties at our dinner and I hate when they bring up politics because my husband and son will argue with them, and it makes me miserable. I tell husband and son please please don’t start on a political discussion with them, but they do.
No Politics. No Religion. There’s a good reason for that rule.

Most of my friends are through my church and are “right” minded, or at the least libertarian.
My sister in law is by her account pro-choice. I asked her what the baby did to deserve it and she clammed.
Good point, I am the hostess, I have one church friend coming who is also conservative, my kids are conservative (by the grace of God) but all others wouldn’t vote for a Republican under any circumstances and luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuv ubama.
Interesting comment from a ubama voter at the grocery store yesterday though holding forth in the baking aisle:

I find this to be the case also. In our geriatric neighborhood, conservatives outnumber liberals 5 - 1, yet the first ones to broach politics at a neighborhood social gathering and go into an emotional, irrational mess are the lib neighbors. Never fails. I actually look forward to experiencing the outbursts as a form of cheap entertainment and a sensory reminder of how liberalism is a form of mental insanity. I really have to check myself during these escapades. Eviscerating a lib neighbor in front of their peers with conservative logic and fact is too easy and would make most of us in the neighborhood feel vindicated, but wouldn't promote neighborly harmony- which, for the time being, is more important than counting coup against a few idiots.
I remember somewhere that BREVITY is the soul of wit. “Zingers” do not go on pontificating for 3 or 4 paragraphs.
I guess they won’t be publishing “Zingers” to use on rabid, leftist tree suckers.

It shows what to expect of their talking points - and they are quite weak....if I do bump into any of those statements it will be fun to cut them down swiftly.
We are supposed to be going over my brother’s house for Thanksgiving this year - problem is they have this uber liberal couple that always shows up - I told my brother if they decide to go to his house - call me - we’ll stay home with our turkey - they can keep their turkeys.

I was at a dinner the other night with very conservative people from a number of foreign countries who are here for a relatively short time. We all got in a discussion about the gay agenda, and they said it was a culture shock to come over here and have the gays so aggressive. It frankly was a relief to know that there are other serious, responsible folks that believe the gayness is a moral issue.
It's the new normal. Get with the program, komrad.
Funny, it is just the opposite in my family. We have the one little liberal troll that every once in a while chimes in to tell us the virtues of her ideology. She is quickly shut down with real facts and she goes back to eating her free turkey.

I am so blessed... most of my family is conservative and the ones who aren’t won’t be dining with us. In our family we have ONE married couple who are liberal, but more middle of the roaders. So politics around our table are rather boring with everyone in agreement.

Fortunately, no kind for Thanksgiving this year. I used to just keep quiet in mixed company but no longer. We’re in the middle of a war and I’m not staying quiet any longer. I’d love to hear some of the weak retorts in this article because they are a hanging fastball when you are expecting a hanging fastball.
I’m hosting for my son who is AF reserves, biracial yet conservative as the day is long, his girlfriend, who is for the most part, conservative; despite going through the university lib grist mill. In addition, my mostly liberal and quasi libertarian daughter and her Gary Johnson supporter husband (who happens to resemble “Steve” on the old “Married with Children” show). All in the presence of my once-blue-collar-democrat, now RABID conservative farm boy husband (both my children are his stepchildren) who has a gigantic temper and threatening presence of a pro wrestler. I converted him to conservatism-you know what they say about the ex-smoker and his/her vigor!
I have prepared a ten course meal so between that, deep frying the turkey, football and texas hold ‘em, I hope that will keep them pre-occupied to the extent that there will be no erruptions (there have been in the past.)

If anyone brings up politics at our table it is likely our union dependent son-in-law. He would be the only lib left around here since the lesbians moved to DC so they could be “married”.
