Hurricane Sandy: Staten Island Survivors
The Atlantic ^ | 11/21/12

Posted on 11/21/2012 7:15:33 PM PST by Kartographer

As we head into the Thanksgiving weekend, thousands of families in the northeast face a difficult holiday season. For those still reeling from the effects of Superstorm Sandy, emotions are still raw and futures are uncertain. Reuters photographer Mike Segar visited Staten Island last week, spending time with residents hard-hit by Sandy. He collected not just their portraits but their stories, as they stood amid the wreckage of what had been their homes, businesses, and places of worship. While there was anger and sadness on display, there was also a sense of gratitude for the outpouring of help from afar, and the groundswell of support from friends and neighbors.

There was a lot of despicable low-life post about these poor souls right here on FR. Stuff that was way out of line and some of the lowest stuff I have ever seen posted of FR, they were more like something out of DU or some other far left trash pit.

For those of you who don't know Staten Island is a bastion of conservatives caught behind the GREAT BLUE WALL. Just like so many of our California FReepers and much to my fear soon to be true of us New Mexican FReepers as well. On top of that they are fellow Americans that have done us no direct harm and that is enough for me.

I have to ask how many of you would choose to spout your trash talk to 89 year-old World War II veteran Michael Arbinni who's home that was built by his father was destroyed? How many would care to spout their garbage to Anthony Morotto who at the height of Hurricane Sandy, heard screaming from behind his home, one of only a handful in the area with a second story. Morotto tied a rope to his waist and pulled three neighbors from the flood in through his second story window.

The garbage I saw posted about these people reminds me of two quotes the first is from Michael Shaara's 'The Killer Angels': "Any man who judges by the group is a peawit. You take men one at a a time,..."

The second is from Charles Dickens 'A Christmas Carol': "It may well be that, in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than MILLIONS..."

Why, why, why isn't Obama being blamed for the destroyed lives from Sandy? He showed up for two photo-ops and is portrayed as the Savior. GWB did far more for Katrina survivors but was trashed. What can we average people do for the Sandy survivors? I just don't want Obama to get credit for the good to come out of the charity we offer for Sandy's people. (and I am well aware of the Reagan quote 'you can do a lot of good if you don't worry about who gets credit'. I am just tired of Obama getting credit for everyone else's good work)

Funny... I don’t recall you getting your knickers all in a bunch by the similar despicable posts here during the Texas wildfires in 2011. Of course that was high primary season, and hatin’ on Perry was all the vogue...

Selective memory I guess. Or predjudice. Or who knows what.

Anyway, you’re painting with a pretty broad brush there, kartographer. Maybe you could crank the self-righteousness down just a teensy bit.

Didn’t know this about Staten Island. Have to take your word for it.

If true, (that it is a conservative community in a blue state), then I guess that explains a lot about why they seem to have been forgotten by both the president AND the media.

Lesson to be learned... if your living in a conservative community, dependent upon a liberal government, BAD PLACE TO BE! Get OUT

I tried.

You tried what, to disparage Free Republic.

If it was truly that bad, which I don't recall, why didn't you hit the abuse button. You and I both know there are people here that get out of line but I know and believe you do too that Jim Robinson and the Mods do not abide such things.

Did you bother to contact JimRob or the Mods about these things. Hindsight is 20/20 but if you witnessed them then why didn't you complain?

Since when did the the Truth become disparaging?

Looks like Orwell was right:“During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act”

Then why didn’t you speak for the truth when it supposedly happened nearly a month ago?

Wrong island, bro.

Many of the people of Staten Island are, in spirit, Freepers.

For decades SI had been the sole republican/conservative county in the southern tier of New York.

We got our asses kicked by a unique storm. We will recover, but we don’t appreciate bravo-sierra.

Your empathy for people facing a tragedy is determined by their politics? I have seem many charitable and heroic acts by people of all stripes in time of need. Shame on you.

Nope, that's enough.

The first thread you linked your comment was removed, the second you posted you made no comment and the third thread comment is below:

Please DONOT Hijack this thread to spew your wish of hell and damnation on the residents of NY and NJ. They are fellow Americans and as the bible says the rain falls on the just and the unjust. Such rants are not what FR is about and is liken to the acts of DUmmies.

Kinda speaks for itself.

You did an excellent job at something you didn’t me to do. So when was you last experience with something that knocked out the power to three million people?

Sounds bad yet there are a solid group of FReepers who will thump their chest and tell you it isn’t all that bad or outright hint you are exaggerating. Their seem to be a small but vocal contingent that I wouldn’t be surprise to hear them go up to the Lord after Armageddon and say: “Lord why all the hype in the Book of Revelations? I mean it wasn’t all that bad.”

Worse yet is all of the ‘ODS’ I’ve seen here on FR. Yes ‘Bama’ is horrible, yes he HAS GOT TO GO, but these people act like ‘Bama’ either conjurered up the storm or the whole thing is some Machiavellian plot out of a bad suspense novel. LIFE goes on, things happen. The storm doesn’t know or care that it’s election time or what ‘BAMA’ has done to this country.

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear of people who believed so much that the hurricane is just some leftist plot that they are caught unprepared for the storm and dying as a result of it crying out “It’s Obama’s fault” with their last breath!

Some seem to have reached a point where if they go to the doctor next week and he tells them that they have cancer it will be Obama’s fault! Or if they have a flat tire on the way to work next week it will be Obama’s fault! If you step on a crack and break your mother’s back it will be Obama’s fault!

To me this is the talk, methods and the mindset of the leftist. Its the same shill BS they spewed against George Bush. I thought we are better than that. I know we should be better than that. I am sure that we can be better than that.

The other thing I notice is that is the me, me, me mindset so many seem to be taking with this storm. Hell this storm will most likely KILL people and here’s people who are supposedly conservatives sounding like leftist. Everything is me me me. How is the Hurricane going to effect the election? And so on it’s sickening. So people are going to die and homes get lost and peoples lives get turned upside down and inside out, well that’s bad but how is it going to effect me? I guess it doesn’t matter what losses occur as long as it doesn’t effect the election. Seems many on FR have their priorities screwed up.

I truly believe that if the Yellowstone super volcano was to explode in a Krakatoa like event that there are a solid group of FReepers who will thump their chest and tell you it isn’t all that bad or outright claim the whole thing is exaggerated. So now I’ve showed you just the kind of ‘garbage’ that was posted and that it was posted and that I spoke up against it repeatedly. I did all the things that a good FReeper and a good Christian should have done so what’s your complaint?
